You can blame motorists for traffic jams while poor roads and organization of the traffic is the reason. Canada has about 2.5 hospital beds per 1000. Two times less than France, three times less than Germany and even less than US (2.8). Anyway, at 8.5M people Quebec should have about 21,250 hospital beds. They claim the capacity of only 1250 COVID beds, i.e., 5% of the total. This is ridiculously low for the pandemic. It is like keeping one lane road open to downtown and ask people not to drive.

Worst than that. They are at 1250 beds because they cancelled elective surgeries. They had 800 beds before that.

In 2020 they had over 2000 but they cancelled even more.

I recently read there are something like 15000 beds total but am not sure of this number. There is also a problem of how they use these beds. Quebec apparently has a very high usage on a constant basis. I think, not sure, but think this is partially because we host the elderly in the wrong places. It's a cluster F.

Between 6 to 8 weeks in my opinion. It is not the same situation as last year. The transmission of the virus cannot stay at this level of intensity for ever. It is already slowing down in South Africa, it will do the same here. The mass vaccination of the 3rd dose will also help a lot to slow down transmission. As soon as they will be able to predict that hospitalisation will decrease steadely they will give us oxygen. 2022 is election year. Legault will want to cut the measures ASAP and get out of this mess.

But what Montreal is doing, even now, is remarkable. It is saying to the young and to the vaccinated/boostered, you must sacrifice your enjoyment of life to help protect those who have made a choice different than yours (and a choice different than what is recommended by the government), and still primarily to protect the elderly. It also destroys private business, but apparently Legault doesn’t give a shit.

I personally disagree with that. Just my opinion.

What you may be underestimating is just how bad health care in Quebec is. This situation exposes the weakness even more. We mask some of the problems with primary private health care but as soon as hospital beds are involved, we're screwed.

Legault has little choice. I just hope people hold him accountable. Not for his handling of the pandemic but for not doing anything to fix the original problem.

There have been studies you can find on pubnet that say curfews do slow it but they are also very quick to say "curfews work to slow down transmission but we are not taking into account the economic cost". The cost/benefit is really questionable.

So I’m going to do Montreal Light in Boston for one or two nights - Casino, Seafood, Hockey game + two appointments with a national agency many here know full of Russian and Ukrainian women. Problem is I’ll be paying the Legault penalty of +$200/hour more per appointment, so will keep it to hours only.

I’m getting really skeptical about about a Montreal visit in 2022. Goal posts are getting moved every week. What’s next?….

Me too, I had planned a trip last week but didn't want to get stuck in Canada if I got a positive PCR test, and now this. I can get into plenty of trouble here in NY, but I do miss the Quebecois girls and the exchange rate! Glad I got some action in during the summer.

True that. When Omicron showed up it was a game changer. Even before Omicron I had forgotten that the booster shots weren't available up there until recently. I know that doesn't necessarily stop acquiring the Omicron variant, but the booster does work well with the Delta variant. Either way stay safe up there guys and the curfew sucks!

I got mine yesterday.
At least while standing in line for an hour , I had the pleasure of having an absolutely fun conversation with a very cute 20 year old healthcare worker.

I agree YO Yo Legault really fucked up on that one and what is even more infuriating he is trying to blame Health Canada saying he was following the 6 month recommendation even though the province had plenty of vaccines and Ontario had already started rolling out boosters weeks before.
Data from Israel was also available. Strange he had no qualms of disregarding Health Canada when they recommended a couple of weeks between 1 and 2 dose and we had to wait 4 months. Luckily that proved to be a good decision, not because he was basing it on anything other than availability of vaccines.
He will be handing out candies as soon as possible with both hands keeping in line with all scumbag politicians in an election year.

The appointments are fantastic, so are the random Quebecois girls, but I enjoy brunch at McLeans, music at Hurley’s, a jog along the river, a game at Bell and then the casino. I don’t want to have to explain to agents why I’m traveling to a Canadian city during a lockdown.

I can replicate a Montreal trip in a city like Boston and wait out this pandemic.

My convo with the border agent lasted about one minute, asked for my passport, where i lived, what i sos for work and was i bringing anything as a gift, all the usual asked why i was going i told him just to hang out, then he asked if i got trsted i said yes he asked the result i said negative he said have a nice day
The easiest crossing ive ever had, didnt have to explain why i was going at all except said i was going to hang out, didnt ask to see my vaccination card nor proof of my test
