The only thing that will drive the popularity of soccer in the USA is the large immigrant populations in certain states. In Connecticut Rentschler Field sold out for a meaningless game against Czech Republic.......the people who were at that game were mostly illegal aliens who work in the restaurant and landscaping businesses in CT. The future of soccer in the USA is in their hands. This is why I believe that any illegal alien who tries out for and makes the USA team should be granted citizenship..........giving immunity to all others who try out.

For the natives, I think soccer is close to maxed out in popularity. North Americans demand more violence and action in their sports, which is why hockey and American football are ideal North American sports. That being said, I like watching the World Cup every 4 years.

Hello EB,

Are you serious?! LOL! Now there's a departure from the right...

Have fun,

Jman

So far great soccer can`t get enough of this sport,KOREA great ,USA and ENGLAND GREAT,ARGENTINA SUPER,to get back on Eagerbeaver comment, just like to say that you should go to a soccer game before stating that people who go to soccer games are all illegal aliens ....LOL....you probably are thinking that the 48,000 people who went to watch the impact and ac milan were illegal aliens too....LOL..all the soccer games i`v been to in north america the fans are from all walks of races and ages just like all sports, the only reason why soccer bashers bash soccer is that they fear that soccer will rule north america sports and take over the world ooooooooouuuuu....LOL.....which i believe to be true only because more children playing soccer it in north amerca than any other sport at present.

USA Wins

I love the New York Post's Headline:

http://www.newyorkpost.com/

USA Wins 1-1 World Cup Match ends with the greatest tie against the British since Bunker Hill

For those of you who are not experts in US history, the reference is to the Battle of Bunher Hill in Boston in 1775 during the Revolutionary War.

The team from Argentina, led by soccer great Diego Maradona (head coach), was very impressive yesterday. Their speed & accurate ball handling was the best i had seen in years of watching the sport. The goal scored (on a header) was magnificient. Seeing Maradona on the sidelines looking dashing in a suit was a sight to behold.

I can't wait for the Germany/Australia match later today.

Hello all,

See that Jman. This is why you can't pick on spelling all the time, because even an educated lawyer (albeit a Yankee fan) can slip. That's okay EB, no one, not even the soldiers, got the name of that hill right in the first place since the battle was fought on Breed's Hill and the battle has forever after been called Bunker Hill.

The American goal was the biggest GOOF! Playing soccer in high school for a few years I've seen this happen a few times. It's October. The game is late...toward night. The weather is in the low 40s. The grass is wet. Muscles are stiff, and the ball is wet and feels like a rock. Sucks to kick it or get hit by it. Someone takes a shot at the goal and the spin of the ball makes it go right off the goalies cold hands and into the net. It's embarrassing as hell for the goalie any time at any level. In the World Cup...it's catastrophe! I don't know what the conditions were at the time of this match but even Bill Buckner probably didn't suffer as much as the English may make this goalie pay for this goof. I hope they don't ruin him for it. He probably feels totally sick about it on his own.

DOH,

Merlot

Concerning that goal what was memorable was to see the facial expression (or more exactly the lack of any facial expression) on David Beckham's face just after the goaler made his mistake. I wonder what Beckham was saying to himself then...

Germany vs. Australia

Now we're watching a fine soccer game. Germany is impressive and they lead 1/0.

Es tut mir Leid aber ich glaube das die deutsche Mannschaft will die Australianer besiegen.

Klose! Zwei /Null

Apparently Maradonna's brother in law is a player on the Argentinian squad.

Does anyone know who he is?

North Americans demand more violence and action in their sports, which is why hockey and American football are ideal North American sports.

Following your observation means that 'present generations' demand more violence and action.
Since Baseball has been no.1 sport for a long time in th US.

But it doesn't explain why Golf and Baseball are still more popular in US.
Soccer is far more demanding and have a lot more action.

Why isn't Cricket and... what about Rugby if you want action and violence ?

The real reason is the way Money flows.
Money goes to major leagues...fashioned on the same 2 divisions, season style.

One day, someone will come up with a solution to 'sell' Soccer to Americans just like US Football.

It really has nothing to do with the game itself.

Of course I'd like to see soccer players with hockey gear and razor blades on the Jabulani.
The field would be shorter and the goal net would catapult the ball right back in the game.
Instead of yellow and red cards, I'd rather have a slap or a sharp kick from the refere.

And in England's goalie case... It would be thumbs down like the good old days of Maximus !

One day, someone will come up with a solution to 'sell' Soccer to Americans just like US Football.

In the 3 games yesterday there were a total of 16 shots on goal and 6 goals. This is 5.33 shots on goal and 2 goals per game. This is not action. You will sell the sport with more action. American football is a hard hitting violent sport with a lot of action. This is what the North American fan wants to see. Even in baseball, there are nearly 9-10 runs scored per game.

Personally, I like watching the goals in soccer but there is too much nonsense going on, as far as the amount of flopping, yellow cards etc. The fan watching these games has the sense that the quality of the acting job determines whether or not a yellow card is given. From what I can see most of the yellow cards are play on type situations, or else there should just be a simple awarding of a free corner kick to the non-offending team. The biggest joke of all was the 2006 World Cup where Zinadine was essentially baited into being ejected from the championship match, a game France should have won, and probably would have won had his ejection not occurred. For the average fan, this all adds up to too much peripheral fucking nonsense and too little action.

I like the action, but there is not enough of it. I have made proposals earlier in this thread on how to make the sport more interesting for the North American audience. I stand by those suggestions.

You meant to say "Zidane" got kicked out of the match for headbutting the prick who called his sister a whore. Zinadine is his first name.

Anyways, i agree that there's too much faking going on which halts the pace of the matches. Maybe they should do like they now do in hockey & penalize a player who's obviously faking an injury. Like giving him a yellow card or something. It wouldn't totally eliminate the problem, but i'm certain it was reduce the amount of such infractions.

EB. If you're looking only at goals even in US Football there isn't much sometimes.
Same in Hockey. Many games end-up with not much.

As for violent action ? there would be no reason why Rugby isn't in the US.

I can describe you the exact attitude of a lot in North America in an opening media statement about England vs. US. "Finaly a game which will get both side of the Atlantic interested in watching Soccer"

As if they forgot both Canada and US has a lot of Italians, French, Germans, Spaniards, etc...

The same kind of peripheral f* nonsense happens in Baseball and even Hockey and Football when the game is lame and they start talking about the life of this player or the coach.

They sound so much like 'une gaigne de memeres' to me.

And what about Super Bowl ? You get a bunch of singing and dancing in the middle of the game which make me yawn everytime. They even get to talk more about Jackson's boobies more than the game and they need extra special commercial to keep half of the population interested cuze they can't understand the rules. You really think the majority is looking into the sport in itself ?

Tell you what ! I love Hockey, Soccer, Football, Nascar, F1 racing, Basketball, Tennis, etc... and even sometimes Baseball and Rugby.

I occasionaly watch Golf and Fishing but you can't tell me that these two are more interesting than Soccer. Yet these two are more popular in the US than Soccer.

In Soccer you have nations against nations.
It's like the Olympics without the BS of the medals for a 0.0000001 sec. difference.

US has a good team this year and I certainly hope they will go further.

Cuze when you're a real sport lover you know just how much it is hard to run like these guys a hole 45 minutes instead of a stop and go sport.

And as for contact ? tell you what ! come and play a game and you'll see if you can endure !

As went to my office this morning I was unable to watch the first half of the Cameron/Japan soccer game. I was surprised and pleased to see how well the Japanese team played the second half. They have athletics skills; we cannot deny that. Up to now I was not impressed by any African team and between you and me I think that Algeria is a joke.

No surprise this morning. Even if I like a lot Denmark I was not surprised by the final score. Netherlands was not too impressive but they have a good team.

Later today Italy vs. Paraguay .... I love Italy, Italian culture, Italian cuisine, Italian women, etc. but I really hate them when it comes to soccer. I hope that Paraguay will humiliate the squadra azurra.

Italy and France: two countries I hate when it comes to soccer.

I didnt think South africa was too bad, they should have beaten mexico and nigeria's goalie really kept them in the game vs argentina.

I like you love italian food, women, culture but hate them when it comes to soccer and would also like to see them lose today. Paraguay has the best chance of beating them in their quite easy group that they have managed to draw.

master_bates,

You're probably talking about Sergio Agüero who is Maradona's son in law. Agüero is with Giannina - Maradona's daugther - and they have a son together.

That makes alot more sense, thank you for clearing that up for me.
