We must not have been watching the same game.

Did you not see the ball go off of diego milito's hand that led to the first goal?

I think it's time to reply to this one by recalling a simple rule pertaining to soccer: In soccer there's an hand ball call only if the player did it intentionally. To many people seem to ignore this rule (that can lead obviously to different interpretation). In the case of Milito's hand leading to Demichaelis goal it is obvious that it was unintentional. Simple as that. So this was not a fault. Knowing this simple rule (implying the concept of INTENTIONALITY) will avoid too much discussion between laymen not aware of the soccer culture. Concerning hand ball fault, Kaká replied iwith irony to Maradona (because the Argentinian coach said that Luis Fabiano goal was the result of a hand ball) that Maradona was a true expert and probably the best person to criticize it because he was himself an expert in hand ball fault!

The best moment however was Martín Palermo goal 10 minutes before the end of the game. What a relief to see this 36 years old vet score a nice goal. The true scandal in that game was the vicious attacks aganist Messi by the Greeks players.

Speaking of vicious attacks there's a FIFA Comittee examining the case of David Villa. Maybe he will be suspended because he hit in the face the player of Honduras (Emilio Izaguirre).

Brazil = getting help from referres, as usual, one chance, one goal, that's it, no show, no performance. (Fabiano's two hands of god).
Italy = desaster performance as usual, suffering to qualify, they make me cry.
England and Germany = they may go home tomorrow, if not, they won't survive in the next rounds.
Spain = they wake up and start playing a good soccer so they may do something.
Holland = good job so far, but the cup is far away.
Chile and Uruguay = two big surprises in this WC, they playing a very nice football.
Argentina = Best team so far.

Overall, in my opinion, this WC is going to one of the south americans teams, they are performing better than the european.

to be continued...

The French boys have disgraced themselves, from the coach not wanting to shake hands to the fiasco the players put on in this major event, truly unsportsmanship,France is crying.

That's why I said the coach 'was' the problem.

A guy who doesn't shake hands with the opposite coach doesn't belong in any sports.
You even go boxing and kick your opponent's ass by shaking hands.

Whatever happened within the team should have kept within the team and you don't suspend a player right in the middle of a world cup unless some 'real sh*t' was boiling for a while.

Anyway France wasn't even supposed to be there this year.
So bye bye ! they'll have more than one reason to clean their act and come back stronger next time.
If they care about it !

Personally I don't much.

Africans and Latinos are the best !

The 2010 soccer mondial makes everyday the demonstration of the referees failure. Modern soccer is impossible to supervise the same way as 20 years ago. It is too fast, too strong, too tricky...

FIFA has to adapt to modern soccer. The refs are just human they can not take decision so quickly and never fail. And the players are cheaters (which is normal since the system allows it)....

Unbelievable as the USA overcomes yet another disallowed goal that should not have been disallowed to win the Group!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1st time that the US team has won a World Cup Group since 1930!

So... Soccer isn't big enough EB ?
"Former President Bill Clinton lingered in the locker room for 45 minutes after the game to congratulate the players. When Donovan scored, raucous cheers erupted on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange and even in White House auditoriums in Washington, D.C....."

You can always think Argentina wasn't tested yet but even if I like the fact US are up there (in front of the brits) they were lucky against them. So... this whining about getting there even if they had goals disallowed should stop now.

Donovan showed he's good (as I bet on him) but the real test will not come from Algeria (give me a break) or a goalie who couldn't keep the ball.

Still, I like it when half of the US and Canada said the world cup wasn't big enough, too much fake, too many referee mistakes, vuvuzelas being anoying, and... they get all excited watching the game.

Cheers !

For me this is not a big surpise. I predicted before the WC that France and Italy would be out after the first round (I wrote that on this thread). The main problem with these two teams is that there are too many « grosses têtes » playing for them. Good news, Italy won't be able to win a 5th WC. Only Brasil did it and if they won this year a new record will be set.

England and Germany were not impressive neither in the first round.

USA team. Wow! It is a revelation for me. They have a fair chance to beat Ghana . The team is not very technical, they don't know how to shoot well on goals but they have guts and I like it!

Brazil is my favorite team but right now I'm not fully convinced that they can win the WC this year. Under Dunga, they don't play their habitual style and that can cause them problems in the long run..

Netherlands is playing good. Argentina and Uruguay are also good teams able to go far. I'm not quite sure about Spain. I didn't like the way they plyed the last game even if it was their best one.

Concerning Brazil and Dunga there's a big story going on in Brazil between him and the journalist Alex Escobar representing the (superpowerfull media conglomerate) Globo.

http://www.mediapart.fr/club/blog/l...football-bresilien-et-l-arrogance-de-la-globo

Today Dunga sent his excuses to Globo and Alex Escobar. He said that he was stressed because his father is ill (back in Brazil) and he was upset about the flood in the Nordeste.

O Globo critized him because he didn't select Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and other superstars on the team.

I just read online in an italian newspaper that Buffon was very critical of Lippi (Italy's coach). After Domenech in France will there be another scandal in Italy implying a coach?

Pride, guts and determination, some of the time, will take you as far as talent if the PG&D is coupled with some modest talent. The USA team has modest talent but I can see them beating Ghana, and maybe even going as far as the semis, because of their other qualities.

USA team can go very far for the simple reason that they have nothing to loose and everything to gain. Italy and France failed miserably on the first round because they had too much pression on them (especially France because some members of the team were involved in a sex scandal with a minor earlier this year).

I like very much a player like Donovan because he always does his best on the field. Up to now this WC is full of surprises. What will be the next shockers? A defeat of Brazil? A loss of The Netherlands? Why not a final between Argentina and the USA?

I have only admiration for the USA team and I hope it will give a new impetus to the practice of this sport in that country.

Brazil is playing tomorrow against Portugal. I don't know what to expect

It would truly be shocking if no one cheats the U.S. of a legitimate goal...for once.

What I'll miss the most about the Italian team is Ilary Blasi (Totti's wife).

I keep hearing about the next upset might be Brazil, from what i believe, Portugal man for man has a better team,so this will not be an upset if Brazil has a lose against Portugal,Kaka is out for game but then again he has done nothing just like he did nothing all year for Real Madrid in the Spanish league, unlike Portuguese player Christiano Ronaldo who had a super year for Real Madrid is in the line up for Portugal, in my view Dunga the coach for Brazil should not have kept Ronaldinho one of the greatest soccer players which is in his prime out of their squade for this year,i still am stund that this has happened,i believe their is no way Brazil has the team to win the world cup and Dunga coach from brazil will realize his mistakes and the media in brazil will hunt him inthe end.

Italy deserved their fate today. They didnt show up until the 80th minute and it was already too late. The only reason they hung around was because Slovakia was trying to score more goals and playing open instead of coming back on defence to ensure its place in the final 16 and didnt make any subsitutions until the game was almost over.

I was impressed by the 2 beautiful free kicks japan scored on, wow thats talent!

Brazil and Portugal played against each other 18 times in the past

Brazil won 12 games, Portugal won 4 and 2 games were nil.

However, in the context of a WC, the last time that these two teams met (in 1966 in England), Portugal won 3-1 over Brazil.

Here's a list of all the former games:

Brasil 6 x 2 Portugal (Gama/Brasil - 19/11/2008)

Brasil 0 x 2 Portugal (Londres/Inglaterra - 06/02/2007)

Portugal 2 x 1 Brasil (Porto/Portugal - 29/03/2003)

Portugal 1 x 1 Brasil (Lisboa/Portugal - 17/04/2002)

Brasil 4 x 0 Portugal (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil - 08/06/1989)

Portugal 0 x 4 Brasil (Coimbra/Portugal - 08/06/1983)

Brasil 3 x 1 Portugal (São Luiz/Brasil - 05/05/1982)

Brasil 1 x 0 Portugal (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil - 09/07/1972)

Portugal 0 x 2 Brasil (Lourenço Marques/Portugal - 30/06/1968)

Portugal 3 x 1 Brasil (Liverpool/Inglaterra - 19/07/1966)

Portugal 0 x 0 Brasil (Porto/Portugal - 24/06/1965)

Brasil 4 x 1 Portugal (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil - 07/06/1964)

Portugal 1 x 0 Brasil (Lisboa/Portugal - 21/04/1963)

Brasil 1 x 0 Portugal (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil - 09/05/1962)

Brasil 2 x 1 Portugal (São Paulo/Brasil - 06/05/1962)

Brasil 3 x 0 Portugal (São Paulo/Brasil - 16/06/1957)

Brasil 2 x 1 Portugal (Rio de Janeiro/Brasil - 11/06/1957)

Portugal 0 x 1 Brasil (Lisboa/Portugal - 08/04/1956)

Today Julio Baptista will take the place of Kaká (red card)
Daniel Alves will take the place of Elano (injuried)
