A day after getting benched and openly complaining about playing time, Blue Jays designated hitter Frank Thomas was released by Toronto, according to a report from TSN of Canada on Sunday.
This is quite a shocker. Are they really convinced that Hurt can't hit anymore? This is a team that believes itself a contender and he's been in the middle of the order. Wow!

That was a terrible signing by JP Riccardi, in my opinion & the opinion of others. Riccardi has never been very patient with players who publicly criticize the organization (e.g. Shea Hillenbrand) who are also a distraction in the clubhouse. What probably convinced the team to get rid of Thomas was probably the fact he refused to get on the field after the game yesterday & congratulate the other players when the team won. He was also not hitting & clogging up the basepaths whenever he got on base. The other teams were also pitching around Vernon Wells, who was hitting in front of Thomas. But another major reason for his release was the fact he'd be owed $10 million dollars next year if he'd get 304 more plate appearances. Since he refused to be a part-time player until he got out of his slump, this was an easy move. Matt Stairs is also a much better hitter than he is & very-well liked in the clubhouse. They'll be better defensively in left field with the likely platoon of Shannon Stewart & Adam Lind.

The 19-year veteran has a vesting option worth $10-million in 2009 and needs 304 more plate appearances for it to become guaranteed. The option is part of the $18.12-million, two-year deal Thomas signed with the Blue Jays in November 2006.

By the way, i'm laughing my head off reading the message boards where people are speculating that the move was done for the Jays to sign Barry Bonds. As if!!! He's older than Thomas, injury-prone & a much bigger distraction & he'd be looking to be overpaid. Stay home, Barry!

The NFL Approach

More and more MLB teams are taking the NFL approach. If the player does not produce, absorb the contract hit or the lost signing bonus money and move on. The as long as the replacement is viewed as being more productive at a mere fraction of the cost this will continue to happen.

The Orioles dumped Jay Gibbons and it did not hurt them.

Pope prays at Yankee Stadium to help wooful Yankees

I just read that the Pope is about to hold mass at Yankee Stadium this afternoon. He must be a NY Yankees fan, no doubt. There's just nothing that will stop the Yankees from trying to change their misfortunes!

The pope accepted the highest bid. Even at his age he can play a better first base than Giambi.

It seems to be working this afternoon. The Wankies are winning and Boston losing. If the scores hold up, the former will close to within 2 after the first 20 games. At this rate, I'll win my bet with Joe T. by only 16 games.

Pope celebrates Mass at Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI prayed at New York's Yankee Stadium on Sunday, asking God to bring healing and strength to the NY Yankees, and direction for people "consumed with the Yankees."

Sunday marks the last day of his trip to the United States. He is celebrating Mass at Yankee Stadium before a crowd of about 60,000 Yankee fans.

Kid 2. Ellsbury, 2-4, plus a walk. 2 steals, 1 run.
Kid 3. Jed Lowrie, 2-5, 2 runs, 1 rbi.
Kid 4. Pedroia - rbi double to tie the game, scored the winning run.
Kid 5. Young David Ortiz - 2-4, plus a walk, 2 rbi, 1 run
Kid 6. Jonathan Papelbon - 1 gorgeous inning for the save.

Nervous? Ya, I guess I am going to wear rubber underwear in case I wet my pants.....laughing.

Incidentally, Boston came back. Assuming that the Twinkies can hold on to a 6 run lead in the 9th, a projection based on the first 20 games yields a win for me by 24 games.

Hello Josey,

Pictures on a T-Shirt...bwahahahaha. Who cares about a T-shirt. What are the red ones for...the ones you choked on? Here's the real thing at the bottom from the 2004 World Series Champion Red Sox. You know...the year of the greatest choke in sports history...by the Yankers. Just in case that link doesn't work, the next one with the HUGE 2007 ring will. OH MY GOSH...it's sooooo beauuuutiful!!!

Oh by the way. Did you know I live close to the company, Jostens, that made the rings. I actually got to wear a replica just for fun. How about you. NO! Of course not.

These Twinkies World Series victories to which you allude...in which century did they take place? Was it a century which started before there were cars, airplanes, personal computers, televisions, air conditioning, the internet and most people didn't have interior plumbing, phones, radios ...?

Hello anon_vlad,

Actually, there were cars in the late 1800s. But the point that Joe.t is making another sad effort to mock happy members of the current WORLD CHAMPION RED SOX NATION in light of the fact that the billionaire Yankers can seem to win the "Tittle" for themselves is sooooo obvious. Maybe we should all just sympathize for these members of losing teams and try to comfort them in their suffering as they face another lost season. NOOOOO ...it's soooooo much fun being a PROUD CHAMPION!!! :D

Cheerio Josey,

Korbel :p

Frank Thomas' signing now rated team's worse ever

The Toronto Star has rated Frank Thomas' free agent signing as being the team's worse ever. Of 82 free agent signings in the team's history, this recent one has now surpassed the 4 worse others:

1) Frank Thomas
2) Erik Hanson
3) Randy Myers
4) Corey Koskie
5) A.J. Burnett

There is a team in baseball historically referred to as the Twinkies. They won 2 World Series, 1987 and 1991.

n.b. I could be wrong about this. Please consult Eastender for more accurate information.
