I have tickets for the Seattle Toronto game Aug. 05.
My second MLB game.

Attending a Jays game in Seattle is on my bucket list. It's almost like a home game for the Jays whenever they're in Seattle. Great baseball fans from BC and Alberta go to the games to cheer on their favorite team. Should be a good series! :thumb:

In the "You Can't make this up Department" - J A Happ has hand foot and mouth disease. What are the odds that two baseball players in the same city could get this in the same month?
Thanks Toronto.

GaryH,

The Yankees have not put Happ on the DL, as the Mets did with Syndegaard. There is not necessarily any reason to do so. Syndegaard I think had very bad blisters that prevented him from pitching. As long as Happ doesn’t have blister issues he can start as scheduled against the Red Sox. There is no reason he will not make the start unless he doesn’t feel good or ends up with the blisters. The reason the Yankees got him is the 1.78 ERA and .202 BAA in his last 10 starts against the Red Sox. The Yankees need to unleash that this weekend.

In most victims it just causes discolored skin blotches in the hands, feet and around the mouth. It can be pitched with.

EB is correct in regards to 'hand, foot & mouth disease'. Most of the time it's nothing to be worried about. I also wouldn't be surprised to see JA Happ pitch this weekend.

Speaking of the Yankees....Sonny Gray sucks.

Happ is now on the DL. At the earliest, he’s available next Wednesday

Jonathan Holder started the night with a 2.06 ERA in 43 2/3 innings. He finished the night with a 3.50 ERA in 43 2/3 innings.

Yanks look weak. Rumpleforeskiin prediction of yankee fade coming true?

The last time a starter threw a complete-game one-hitter against the Yankees was Doc Halladay on Sept. 4, 2009.

Well, when you consider that the Sox are manhandling the Yankees without the services of Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Chris Sale, and Eduardo Rodriguez, it's no wonder that the New York Post has an article this morning hoping that today's game gets rained out.

Looks like an 80% chance of rain today, in which case Chance Adams will not start and then Tanaka will take his regular turn tomorrow. Tanaka has a streak of 17 straight scoreless innings going at the moment.

The Yankees have looked terrible the last 3 days- they followed probably their two worst combined pitching-defense disasters of the year Wednesday vs. O's and Thursday v. Red Sox with their worst offensive performance last night. So, it is a really bad 3 game stretch at a bad time. However, looking at the big picture here:

1. Yankees are missing 2 big middle of the order bats in Judge and Sanchez. They were the last team to be shut out in MLB this year and were on pace to break the MLB home run record until recently.
2. Happ is unexpectedly on the DL with a children's disease.
3. At the center of the defensive issues have been the 2 rookies, Torres and Andujar, who have been up and down with their defensive play, mainly because of their inexperience. Andujar has a tendency to lollipop throws that need extra mustard on them and needs to do a better job, and he will.
4. The pitching staff is way deeper than last year- both the rotation and the bullpen. Bullpenning games will be an available option when they get into the playoffs.
5. Although a wild card game is not ideal, as we saw last year, the Yankees were nevertheless 1 game away from the WS.

The Red Sox have managed to avoid any kind of protracted bad stretch of baseball but we will see what happens the rest of the way.

JA Happ, he of the 1.78 ERA and .202 BAA vs. the Red Sox since 2015, was supposed to start today's game but is on the DL with hand, foot and mouth disease. A rainout would be the great equalizer by the baseball gods.

You seem to forget that in 1957 the Milwaukee Braves won a World Series with a strategy of "Spahn and Sain and pray for rain." Sometimes in baseball having rain is a good or even great strategy. Back when the Braves employed that strategy, most teams had 4 man rotations, and very few teams had 2 studs in the 4. In modern baseball you can get away with picking 2-3 guys who are hot in September and can be trusted for 5 innings in a playoff game, and then bullpen the games. I believe the Yankees, who won the World Series in 2009 starting 3 guys (Sabathia, Pettitte, and Burnett) throughout the playoffs, can do the same this year, maybe even getting away with a 2 man playoff rotation (although I think the likely 3 will be Severino, Tanaka and Happ with Sabathia a 4th starter if needed). If Kevin Cash and the Rays can do it so can the Yankees.

Brian Cashman has done a great job developing their farm system. But is there anyone in this organization that can evaluate pitching? For 20 years they have mostly failed in acquiring pitching via Free agency or trades. Danny Neagle, Jeff Weaver, Vazquez (2 times), Kevin Brown, Irabu, Igawa, Carl Pavano, jaime Garcia, Sonny Gray. Cashman got Executive of the year last year. But the Astros were better able to evaluate pitching and acquire better talent - Verlander, Cole, Morton.

The Yankees wanted Cole badly and actually drafted Cole out of HS. The Pirates wanted Andujar and Frazier and the Yankees kept both which bodes well for the future. Teams have learned that pitching is too volatile a commodity and building around young pitching like the Mets did, doesn’t work because guys get hurt and then it’s on to plan B.

BTW until giving up 13 runs Thursday the Yankees had the best bullpen ERA in MLB. The bullpen they have is outstanding and in the playoffs can make up for less than awesome starting pitching as we saw last year. But I believe the Yankees acquiring Happ and Lynn have fortified their staff about as well as they could given the market on starting pitching. Hopefully in the future the younger pitching will come through. Johnny Lasagna looked very promising before hurting his shoulder and Adams and Sheffield loom for the future. Johnny L in particular if he is healthy is gonna make the team next year.

Chance of rain is about 20% after 5 pm. Looks like "Fat Chance" Adams will meet his Mookie after all.

Well, one of those "middle of the order bats" has been missing all year. Comparing missing those two the four Sox out of the lineup and it's pretty clear the Sox are considerably more short handed.

4. The pitching staff is way deeper than last year- both the rotation and the bullpen. Bullpenning games will be an available option when they get into the playoffs.
Oh? Seems to me that have exactly one (1) reliable starter.

It sure isn't. I'd hate to go into a five game series with the flotsam that Cashman has amassed with Severino not available until game five. (or next April.)

The Red Sox have managed to avoid any kind of protracted bad stretch of baseball but we will see what happens the rest of the way.
Maybe because they haven't given the likes of Sonny Gray some 25 starts.

But I believe the Yankees acquiring Happ and Lynn have fortified their staff about as well as they could given the market on starting pitching.
Well, they could have gotten their hands on Nathan Eovaldi. They may very well pay the price for that oversight this afternoon.

You seem to forget that Johnny Sain never pitched for the Milwaukee Braves. The Boston Braves traded Sain to your New York Yankees in 1951 in one of the great heists of all time. (Sain went on to win 33 games for the Yanks, while Burdette won 179 for the Braves, including three in that 1957 World Series.)

By the way, the 1957 Braves had an excellent four man rotation in Burdette, Spahn, Gene Conley, and Bob Buhl.

Conley is also the answer to one of the great trivia questions of all time: name three players who played for three teams in the same city. The answers are: Sal Maglie, who played for the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees in New York, Dutch Zwilling who played for the Chicago White Sox, Cubs, and Whales, and Conley who played for the Boston Braves, Red Sox, and Celtics.

The Yankees traded for Eovaldi before his TJ surgery and he was as erratic a pitcher as Sonny Gray and Michael Pineda. He is very up and down, can be good and can be terrible. He is not better than Lynn and certainly is not better than Happ.

He’s not the pitcher he was then. Most evaluators said he was the best pitcher available this trading season. He’s added a cutter to his repertoire and, of course, having Sandy Leon handling him is a big plus. He was devastating this past Sunday against Minnesota, a middle of the pack offensive club.

Boy, I sure hope the Hose sign Eovaldi to a long term deal before he gets away. As Eck pointed out, repeatedly, a 93 mph cutter is just insane. It's also unhittable. No, Beav, Lynn and Haps are not in Eovaldi's class, not even close.

Look behind you.
Just got back from the Jays game, great stadium, easy parking and plenty of hot female baseball fans.
When I went for beer the home runs happened, piss me off.
Next is the Seahawks VS Indy preseason and will wait for Seattle / Green Bay in Nov.
