sorry you feel this way K man, and yea maybe if this happened in tor or mtl it would of been the same but it happened in beantown, and theres a time and place for everything, and it just seemed inappropriate given the circumstances, im sure not every fan was booing either but it's just bad some people ruin a patriotic moment over their dislike of a former player, i mean booing a player that represents their country is sad, but ok i admit not all boston fans are of this mentality, neither are montreal fans ny fans, nor toronto fans......

if the Boston fans booed Phil Kessel then it is what it is, Had this same circumstance taken place in TO or Montreal I guarantee you the fan reaction would have been the same. So lose the"mentality of the Boston sports fan"accusation!! It's incorrect.

Actually Octavian, the Patriots were 11-5 last year with out Tom Brady at QB and they failed to make the playoffs, tomorrow they will go for their 11th win and they already sealed the division. Of course, they are better with Brady but they did pretty well with out him too.

True but with Brady in the line up they would of went 15-1 and would of won the super bowl.

someone is just in denial that his team is playing el sucko this season, and just think, your still only 5 points ahead of the Leafs and also have played 2 more games

Thanks to lggy's post on November 11 we have a reminder that at that time the habs were "only 5 points ahead of the Leafs" and had also "played 2 more games". That was almost 2 months ago and leaf fans thought the future looked bright.

long season and lots of time to turn this season around

btw, the leafs are only 6 points behind the mighty scabs and the scabs have played one more game...... funny how things can and will work out , its a LONG season boys and girls :)

Thanks to lggy's post on November 28 we can see that the Leafs were "only 6 points behind the mighty scabs" and that the habs had "played one more game." lggy was quite pleased and optimistic with this turn of events...but wait...don't lggy's impressive and well-researched stats indicate that the Leafs had lost ground against the habs since November 11?

It's not fair to make lggy do all the research so here's an update as of January 3: the leafs are now 8 points behind the habs and the habs have played one more game.

Amazing how these 2 squads have maintained roughly the same positions relative to each other over the past 2 months...although the leafs consistently seem to lose ground as time passes.

How does the ol' saying go again? Oh yeah......

"People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

Come on guys, stop it with the name-calling. It has no business in this thread. If some of you want to attempt to demean others with name-calling, go post elsewhere where in some cases it seems to be welcome.

Excellent advice Doc. I agree completely. Let's leave all insults and name-calling out of this thread and concentrate only on factual hockey matters or intelligent presentation of one's opinions on hockey (which of course would be open to intelligent debate if other posters have differing opinions).

Of course, only idiots like yourself would only see what you want to see. You'll never change, GHG, once an idiot, always an idiot. You're an embarassment to all hockey fans, including real Habs fans.

Now, why don't you get off my thread & take your nonsense to your own little stupid thread.

considering the make-up of the average Habs fan, i'm not surprised.

Doc I'm shocked and saddened that you are not following your own excellent advice to keep this thread free of any name-calling or insults. What was that about stones and glass houses?

Habs reject Alex Kovalev scores 4 goals in Ottawa win

OTTAWA -- Alex Kovalev broke a lengthy scoring slump with four goals and added an assist Sunday and the Ottawa Senators beat the Philadelphia Flyers 7-4 in a wild contest that saw both teams make goaltending changes after poor starts.

The Senators jumped out to a 4-1 lead before squandering it, then ran away with the contest with three third-period goals.

Kovalev scored his first goals in 11 games and his first since recording a hat trick in a Dec. 12 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at home.

The previous three-goal effort provided his only goals in the 27 games he'd played, not including three he missed, since scoring on Oct. 29.

Good for Kovy. I always liked the guy although he's perhaps the biggest enigma in hockey. Great skills, sometimes shows flashes of brilliance but then often looks like he's disinterested or not even there. Combine Kovy's skills with the desire and work ethic of someone like a young Bobby Clarke and you'd have quite a player!

reject?

Bob made him an offer and was looking to bring Kovy back, he just took too long so Bob went in another direction - hardly a "reject"

Punchless Habs lose 1-0 to Buffalo

MONTREAL - In typical Jacques Martin hockey fashion, the Montreal Canadiens couldn't wake their fans up by scoring a goal against the Buffalo Sabres and lost a snoozfest by a score of 1-0. With the $20 million smurfs line of Gomez, Cammalleri & Gionta reunited at times, the punchless Habs simply couldn't put one past goalie Ryan Miller, much to the disappointment of fans. As they booed the team off the ice after the end of the game, many fans wondered allowed how team management could justify charging a premium price for tickets considering the poor quality of the entertainment being shown to their home fans. Quite a disappointment, indeed.

Miller (23-8-3) made a huge glove save on Tomas Plekanec's backhand shot during a power play in the first. He kept the game scoreless in the second when he stuck out his left pad to deny Pouliot's chance after the winger was left alone in the slot.

Connolly scored 6:56 into the second. He tapped in a loose puck from the crease for his 11th of the season after his redirection of Jason Pominville's centering pass from the left side struck the left post.

Game notes
Sabres RW Patrick Kaleta missed his third straight game because of a leg injury. Defensemen Nathan Paetsch and Andrej Sekera were healthy scratches. ... Buffalo is 13-1-4 in one-goal games. ... Canadiens LW Andrei Kostitsyn was out of the Canadiens' lineup because of an undisclosed injury sustained Wednesday. His brother, Sergei, missed his second straight game due to a lower-body injury. ... Montreal D Ryan O'Byrne missed the game for personal reasons. ... Halak was the Canadiens' player of the month for December.

USA hockey stars Komisarek & Kessel overjoyed to represent their country at Olympics

Kessel, Komisarek happy to get call

CALGARY -- If there were some post New Year's eve cobwebs clogging Mike Komisarek's head yesterday, they cleared in a hurry.

The Maple Leafs defenceman rang in the new decade in style when he picked up the phone and his boss Brian Burke was on the line with news that he is a U.S. Olympian.

"It's definitely a pretty awesome way to start off the New Year," Komisarek said late yesterday afternoon, still beaming at the confirmation he is going to Vancouver. "As an athlete, it's the ultimate to have the opportunity to represent your country on the Olympic stage.

"It's an honour and a privilege."

That privilege will also go to his Leafs teammate, Phil Kessel, who also got the call yesterday, his coach Ron Wilson, who will guide Team USA to the Olympics for a second time and Burke. It should make for an interesting dynamic in the Leafs dressing room as the Games approach.

The Toronto roster is among the league leader in players headed to the Olympics although none of the six on what the organization likes to bill as "Canada's team" will be wearing the other Maple Leaf.

The Americans are likely to be dismissed by many as a fringe contender for gold which is fine by Wilson. With a young, speedy group, Wilson expects his team to battle for a medal.

"We don't need a miracle," Wilson said, referring to the Miracle on Ice, the epic upset the U.S. pulled to win gold in Lake Placid in 1980. "Any one of a number of countries could win. In these tournaments, the team with the best goaltender usually wins. Right at the moment, the U.S. has the best goalie in the NHL in Ryan Miller.

"If he keeps playing the way he has, we have a pretty good chance of winning a gold medal."

You don't have to convince Flames captain Jarome Iginla of that now that he's taken a good look at the roster.

"They have a good young team," said Iginla, who will lead his Flames against the Leafs tonight at the Saddledome. "There's a lot of good young American players around the league. Sometimes you don't even realize they're American until (the team's announced)."

Kessel is well versed with the Miracle on Ice story, given that he was coached as a youngster in Wisconsin by Bob Suter, who played for the legendary team.

"I think it grew (the game) a lot," Kessel said of the dramatic 1980 win. "It was a pretty big thing for the United States to win -- it will always be remembered.

"We've got a lot of young guys but we've got a lot of skilled guys."

Though neither Leaf player was a surprise addition to the U.S. squad, Wilson said there were questions regarding both at different points of the season. After Komisarek struggled during his first month in Toronto, some of the U.S. management team questioned his inclusion.

With Kessel, the issue was how he recovered from off-season shoulder surgery, a moot point after his strong start.

"There was a lot of debate over Mike, especially the way he started," Wilson said. "But that's all settled down now. He's played really well over the last month.

"After a couple of weeks, (Kessel) was basically a no-brainer."

Having played all of his pro career in Canada, Komisarek knows the passion that fans here have for hockey. The Long Island, N.Y. native would like nothing more than to turn that passion to depression, however.

"I'm not going there just to be part of the event and participate," Komisarek said. "In a short tournament, you can ride a hot goalie or a hot line right to the gold medal game. You want to go there for one reason and that's to win gold."
