Wow, that headline caught my eyes. lol... Now if it said gomez it wouldnt have, lol...

Gomez is currently out with a lower body injury. I heard a few people at the Bell Center joke that he's got no guts. Hopefully he'll be ready for the Leafs game Saturday night.

The Gazette is getting sloppy because this was announced by the CBC about four months ago.

Anyway, I'm glad to see our Habs (a.k.a. the pride of Canada, Canada's best team, Canada's only legit cup contender, etc.) featured in two of three games. :)

BTW the article only mentions Videotron but I'll be watching it on Shaw Direct (formerly Starchoice) and I know Bell satellite will also be showing the three games.

I don't want to rain on your bandwagon, but the Habs ARE NOT Canada's team. The title belongs to the beloved Maple Leafs. The Habs are Quebec's team.

I'd also like to add that the Vancouver Canucks are also a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. You only included Quebec's team.

You have a 3-D tv at home?

Yes I picked up a Panasonic plasma last summer. It's a great TV but I haven't benefited from the 3D very much so far other than 3 blu-ray titles I own and a couple of PS3 games.

Shaw Direct has a dedicated 3D channel which so far showed the gold and bronze medal World Cup soccer games and a Discovery Channel documentary on dinosaurs. I'm told hockey in 3D is very cool so I look forward to see the result on Saturday, especially because CBC will be using Panasonic's cameras.

P.S. Tangledweb I couldn't have written it better myself. ;)

Sorry to burst your bubble Doc but the Habs ARE Canada's team and probably even more so since their playoff run from last year.

Since Quebec constantly talks about separating from the rest of Canada, the habs do not deserve to be considered Canada's team. Quebec can keep 'em!

Great News For Fans of the Original Six:

5 of the Original Six teams are currently in the overall top 11 of the 30 team NHL. Impressive!

(The sixth is not quite that high in the standings but has improved a position over its final standing last year, so there is good news there also.)

Hey guys, check out this goal! Anyone ever see anything like this in the NHL? By the ways what is the defenseman doing on this play?

It reminds of a few goals i saw scored when the player lifted the puck & carried it onto his stick into the net. Sidney Crosby did it back in his junior days & took a lot of flak from Donald S. Cherry for hotdogging it. I'm not sure if it would be allowed in the NHL. There might be a rule that prevents a player from carrying the puck on his stick (which could possibly carry a 2-minute penality for unsportsman-like conduct) in order to prevent such plays from happening......if not, it might happen once a player starts pulling this stuff in an NHL game.

As for your question about what the defenseman was doing, he was simply guarding his area in order to prevent the player from skating to the front of the net.......the last thing the defenceman expected was for the player to do what he did.

I'll do some checking to see if that play would be allowed in the NHL.

Guys...I'm not a hockey player, so I don't know...but couldn't that be considered what we call "bush league" in baseball?

it would never happen in the NHL.... it was not the NHL where this took place

I understand that...but is it a legal play? Is it considered an ethical play?

I believe the rule is that when the shot leaves the stick it cannot be higher than the crossbar. The rule was not violated.

It seems to me that if the defenseman is in "proper position" as claimed by Doc, the play is not only legal and ethical, it's necessary strategically to prevent the defenseman from standing too far in front of the net which is exactly what allowed the guy behind the net too much time and space so he could make the play. I think the defenseman is totally at fault for the goal as he should have stood more on the side he would have easily been able to reach behind and over and bother or obstruct the player with the puck. If the offensive player is not in any way obstructed and the defense retreats to cover the sides of the net, what other play can he make to stop that defense from being played or to counteract that defensive strategy? To do anything other than what he did is to say to the other team "you have won, I cannot score", skate off the ice, and give up. Flat out quit.

If you watch the video the defenseman slams his stick on the ice after the goal as he realized he had fucked up. The play could theoretically happen in the NHL, but the defensemen in the NHL will likely not allow something like that to happen. This is what I have been told by someone who knows more about hockey than I.
