http://www.weei.com/sports/boston/b...12/15/breaking-bank-look-red-sox-payroll-2010 (add Beltres 10 Million to this)

more "proof", if ya cant beat em, join em......... how ya gonna spin this one red sox fans, truthfully.... frankly, it's just good business sense, but since all you sawx fans like to cry about the yanks doing it, i cant wait for the hypocritical answers....... hey JoeT , Eager, and Octavian, to quote Terrel Owens, "Getcha Popcorn",. this ought to be good........ Jman, you first? Rumples? Merlot? whose first, K man?....... Doc you can play too even tho your not a sox fan, be interesting to hear a neutral POV also

Iggy,
Of course Boston has to try to keep pace, I never denied that. Theo just spends with brains, instead of just spends.:p
Let me know when the Sox PASS the Yankees in payroll...we'll talk then...
BTW, as K points out below...Boston got money from Seattle to sign Beltre.

I believe the reasoning behind this Jman was that with the Beltre signing they can now move Lowell over to first in case Youk needs a day off and they also got a good amount of money from Seattle to offset their signing of Beltre. Hall could be a decent back up outfield option as well as infield too.

Thanks K...makes sense now. Imagine that, Theo found value in players that could play in multiple positions.
BTW - Look out, Iggy's loose...he must be hitting the Molsons tonight....:D

I think that article i posted a few days ago about the Red Sox using the Yankee mold is onto something here, like it said, if ya cant beat em, join em! ..add another 10million to the payroll for 2010..... what you say? the red sox dont buy players, dont buy championships? ...... well believe what you wish, red sox fans, but as a most noble hockey mind, oups my bad, i mean noble baseball mind in here once said, "truth hurts" ;)

This is complete and utter drivel which I now expect as the only thing to come out of your keyboard. How is going out and getting a free agent phenom like Beltre being in the mold of the Yankees? What were they supposed to do without a 3rd baseman come spring training? It's not about buying a championship it's about fielding a competitive team and that couldn't be done with oft injured Mike Lowell at 3rd base.

Sounds to me like you're just a little bit ascared of the 2010 season iggy. Lol.

ok, first response is a typical red sox fan response, Jman, can you do better or do you as well fall into the same "trap" like other red sox fan's drivel... "when the sox do something like the yankees it is not the same because ...... (Enter 1000 excuses) ....

hey, thats one of my lines., get your own,,, .. lol.... and Jman, of course the red sox have to keep pace with the Empire, but it's just funny to always hear red sox fans say they are not like the yankees, when in fact, both teams are run quite similar, and that means PAYROLL, with home grown talent mixed in with free agents, smart trades at the deadline, and amazing diehard fans, you said lets talk when the red sox pass the yanks in payroill, nice cop out, you know that will never happen, but just cause they spend 170million a yr on the team, and the yanks spend 200 million, is that really a huge difference? no, it is not

for the record, i dont blame the sox, not one bit, they wanna win, and they as well as the yanks play by the rules...
BTW - Look out, Iggy's loose...he must be hitting the Molsons tonight....:D

I guess the Yanks Winning the 27th Title of their existence was "brainless" money spent badly then , lemme guess, Cashman just got lucky, lol

no doubt it is a good pick up, and the Sox look strong, but i still have Faith in my team

Where I belong.
Baseball expert Bob Klapisch says that the Red Sox had the better offseason than the Yankees but the Yankees....
Because Klapisch, like most writers, underestimates the value of defense. I read an article yesterday that the Red Sox have added 4-5 wins by upgrading their defense alone. Then figure in the additions of Buchholz (full season) and Lackey. Then consider that the spread between the Yankees and Red Sox, by run differential, was only two games last year, the Sox are looking pretty sweet.

The Yankees have clearly upgraded their pitching with Vazquez, their defense with Granderson. However, replacing Damon, Matsui, and Cabrera with Johnson, Granderson, and Gardner is a definite downgrade.

As far as the money thing, the Sox have been in a payroll pack with the Dodgers, Tigers, Mets, Cubs, and Angels. This year they're elevating to just under the luxury tax threshold, while they wait for some fabulous young players to emerge from their farm system and for Ortiz, Lowell, and Lugo to come off the books. They'll still be spending $40 M less than the Yankees. The other big difference between the clubs is that the Red Sox have a farm system. By next year, the Sox will be down to $135 M while the Yankees will continue to spend like drunken sailors.

And, by the way, Joe, Bob Klapisch is a journalist, not a baseball expert.

Nope, not lucky at all.
If you spend enough money brainlessly for a long enough time, eventually you are bound to get something right...lol

Who's next? Pudge Rodgriguez?? One day in October, he looked like the Incredible Hulk. A few months later, after the steroids scandal was blown open, he showed up at training camp looking like bad-looking Enrique Iglesias. He melted! OMG!!
