It should also be noted that the Rangers had given A-Rod a mere $23 million less on a 10 year contract some 7 years earlier ($252 million), so it was not out of the realm of reason that the Angels would have offered even more than the Yankees did.
Jesus H. Christ, Beav. If you really believe this horseshit, you're dumber than I thought. If you don't see the difference between giving a 25 year old a stupid $250 million contract and giving a 31 year old a $275 million contract, I have a bridge in which you might be interested.

On the one hand, you have a moronic 10 year contract given to a player just entering his prime; on the other, you have a moronic 10 year contract for 10% more to a player just entering the decline phase of his career.

Suggesting that A-Rod gave the Yankees a "hometown discount" is perhaps the dumbest thing ever posted on this board that wasn't headed "Joe.T" or "lgna69xxx." Congratulations.

Now excuse me, I gotta go get laid.

Haha...and what would you be? LOL. You joined Merb in October 2008 just over 1 year ago, your first post was on 10/23/08 and the first time you chimed in on anything baseball related was 12/11/08, well after the season ended. Now scrub some jocks rookie! :D

Boras-Manfred war of words an unsettling omen

What you are about to read is a nasty exchange between Scott Boras, the game's most prominent agent, and Rob Manfred, baseball's chief of labor relations.

Manfred says Boras is lying when he portrays the sport's finances in glowing terms. Boras says Manfred is biased because he works for the owners.

The real story is much deeper. And much more disturbing.

The free-agent market opens Friday, and tension is rising between representatives of the players and owners.

The players' side says that baseball is doing remarkably good business, even in a harsh national economy. The owners' side says that baseball is not immune to the economic downturn, and teams are adjusting accordingly.

Read the rest here...

http://www.comcast.net/articles/sports-mlb/20091120/Rosenthal.MLB.Boras.Revenue/

I have to agree with Boras on this point:

"Fans have a right to know what money their team is given," Boras said. "If clubs don't want to disclose it, then don't accept the subsidy. If they do want to accept it, disclose it. Their choice."

And there is a reason why they don't want to disclose it. There was a report a few years ago that Central Baseball Fund/revenue sharing monies were being used by the owners of two teams to defer and cover losses and expenses in other businesses having nothing to do with baseball. What that means is that the Yankees are paying other teams for bumbling/stumbling in other businesses rather than putting their money back into their own team. Apart from being morally wrongful and disgusting, this creates a situation in which political communism is applied to the free enterprise business model.

If I am not mistaken that same report came from Bill Madden of the Daily News who is also mentioned in the cited article.

There absolutely should be 100% accountability by every team that receives one fucking penny of revenue sharing monies as to what they do with those monies. As I recall the earlier article speculated that while it may be in the interests of all teams to hide these disclosures (including teams like the Yankees who are the chief donors to both funds in terms of the money they create for MLB as a whole, and who stay more competitive if other teams misuse the donated funds), it is certainly not in the best interest of the fans of those teams who are misusing those monies.

And it's also not in the best interests of baseball for one team's payroll to be more than 50% higher than the second highest spending club. Considering that this team has developed two quality major league players (Cano and Wang) and still contends every year, something is drastically wrong here.

And, yes, Beav, something is also drastically wrong when 8 teams receive more money from revenue sharing and luxury taxes.

We need two things: a salary cap and a salary floor. I'd suggest a cap of $150,000,000 and a floor of $100,000,000. The big problem with getting this instituted is Bud Selig. Baseball and Fox likes when the Yankees are in the playoffs; if they were limited to $150,000,000, they'd finish in third or fourth place every year.
