It's interesting to look at the deaths per 100,000. By looking at that it makes it seem like there is no problem with states like Florida, Texas, California and Arizona. Which is quite the opposite. Case counts tell us where we are now, not where we have been. A little more of an accurate account of whats happening today.

And that is precisely the data that Maine is using. Canadian authorities cannot ignore what Maine has done. It's got the strictest quarantine rules in the USA. Maine is also a neighbor of Quebec/Canada and shares a border with it, as do 3 other Sensational Six States. In assessing whether to open the border, they can simply pick up the phone, call the Governor's office in Maine, and ask them why they did what they did, and for the data supporting the decision. And then assess that data and weigh it with the economic realities of the tourist industry in Quebec.

Obviously you should be looking at the dynamic picture, not a snapshot of the moment. It is of course very much work in progress and the death numbers will grow, sadly. At the end of the whole shit show though it is the number of deaths that will matter, more than anything else.

But again, whatever numbers we are willing to consider right now, they all look grim, as far as potential cross-border trips are concerned.

Of course Canadian authorities can ignore what Maine has done.
why do Americans have such a hard time understanding that this is a sovereign country.
We can ignore and restrict who ever we want.
Yes it is usually true that whenever the US sneezes we seem to catch a cold, perhaps this time they can sneeze all they want but we will refuse to catch the virus.

I think the mention of Maine or the Sensational Six states is a way or solution to help get your tourism dollars back on track. Sure, Canada can ignore or restrict anyone they want, but working towards a solution is a more reasonable approach. I personally see the border only opening up as a whole, but if it where to open by region the northeast is definitely ready to go. I'm still social distancing and wearing a mask when I cannot so traveling to Montreal would be a waste of time for me because I wouldn't do any banging. The only other thing I do when I'm in town is eat poutine, and I have no interest in traveling 400 miles for that.

Right now the US is like the Titanic heading towards the iceberg and all their politicians are doing is shuffling the deck chair locations or firing anyone that sees an iceberg or admits that one exists.
Total shit show going on with no guarantees of so called sensational six or any states being able to control their own boarders.
instead of opening them maybe it is time to ask the Mexicans to help pay for us building a wall.

OTTAWA -- Canadian and U.S. officials have agreed to keep the border between the two countries closed to non-essential travel until August 21, CTV News has confirmed.
Sources say both governments are on the same page with extending the border restriction measures for another month.
The ban on discretionary travel was first introduced in March and has been extended each month since. The latest extension was set to expire on July 21.

I'm very happy, because the coronavirus in USA is not controlled.

We have made a lot of sacrifices.
I like some Americans but I don't want to see them here.

I personally don't think blocked borders do much but buy you some time, but we don't have our cases under control enough yet that we can handle tracking cases coming in from the outside.

How does one sneek into Canada there days?

Are people running through the fields near a less traveled border crossing and meeting up with a ride?

Look behind you.
It's going to be reopened to 6 states:

Maine
New Hampshire
Vermont
New York
New Jersey

You are leaving out a few states with very low infection rates, Wyoming, Montana, N.Dakota .

There would be no palpable impact (other than improving the Quebec economy) by allowing negatively tested persons coming in from the Sensational 6 States. I would assume that the hospitality and tourism industries are aggressively lobbying for some form of limited reopening of the border that makes sense, rather than this broad brush approach that effectively does nothing other than punish local small businesses in Quebec who are dependent on tourist income. It seems like I am the only person going to bat for these people, which is appalling.
