The U.S., Canada and Mexico have agreed to keep their shared borders closed to non-essential traffic until at least late August because of COVID-19.

Acting U.S. Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf said Thursday in announcing the extension that restrictions on cross-border traffic that have been in place since March have helped slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Officials had said in recent days that another 30-day extension was likely before the expiration of the previous 30-day extension.
The partial closure restricts crossing to commercial traffic, people returning to their home country and other travel deemed essential. It prohibits people from traveling between the countries for tourism or shopping, which is economically important to border communities.

The extension agreed to by the three countries would keep the border closed until Aug. 21...

I didn’t think it was an issue because Canadian students don’t require (don’t get issued) visas to study at US schools. They only require the I20 form from the school. And unlike other international students, they use this form when they arrive at a port of entry to be awarded a F1 student status, from a US CBP, which is different from the F1 visa process. It’s mostly procedural, in that if you have your I20 and other ancillary docs, you simply get it, barring standard screening procedures. But perhaps Canadians were meant to be caught in this F1/M1 visa net as well. I don’t know. But I guess it’s a moot point now.

Bars are open in CT. I am off today and ordered some takeout from my favorite bar-restaurant and noticed some dudes sitting at the bar. The bartender was masked but the customers seated at the bar were not. Which is kind of strange, although I understand you can't drink through a mask. Unless they develop a mask with a straw or drinking spout apparatus, which may be the next big thing in mask technological development.

By the ways in the border thread we have heard Fradi and others bragging for days about how wonderful a job Quebec is doing compared to the USA and how the border should not be opened so as to fuck things all up. I guess things are getting fucked up without the border opening.

I did not go out to celebrate. I went out for takeout food (my lunch- steak tacos) at a restaurant and peeked in at the bar while paying for my food. I did not sit at or enter the bar. I have not been in a bar since the pandemic started in March and have no intention of going now.

One other thing I noticed was that the restaurant removed its booths and substituted wooden tables and chairs where the booths used to be. I assume this was for social distancing reasons.

Because we have an asshole for a health minister as cloudsurf has stated, and that reopening businesses is a trial and error and you will have these spikes.
People, the young in particular think they are invincible and do stupid things.
I am not bashing young people we were no different at their age, I can remember searching for my car not knowing where I left it thank god my children were not as stupid as that.

Because I heard on TV that Canadians don't want the border to be reopened with the United States, because their first wave is not over and cases are starting to rise again in certain states such as Texas and Florida.
