I'm about to start watching "Slumdog Millionaire". I've heard nothing but fantastic comments about the movie & will report once i'm done watching it.

Well, i just finished watching this great little movie & it's definitely Oscar-worthy!!! I wasn't sure if i'd manage to last through the movie during the first 30 minutes or so, but i stuck to it & absolutely loved the final 30 minutes. Freida Pinto (in her first film feature) in the role of 'Latika' is definitely very lovely to look at, as we saw during Sunday evening's awards show. All in all, it'll get an Oscar nomination next week in the best movie & best director category, but i'm not so sure it'll win the big prize. But the movie director (Boyle) is definitely a great storyteller & i'm not surprised anymore why he won the GG for best director Sunday night. Masterful directing!!

Colin Farrell just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in In Bruges. Nice to see this excellent movie get some publicity. It is really worth watching!

And Micky Rourke wins for Best Actor in a Drama for the Wrestler. Well deserved for a great performance!

It was freakin' wierd. The midget , the coke and the hookers ? Wierd.

I've been a fan of Boyle since the very beginning ('Shallow Grave'). He is indeed a great storyteller, he goes from one genre to the next effortlessly and his visual flair is impeccable. As a fan and movie-goer I'd give "Slumdog Millionaire" ****1/2 (ambitious, wildly entertaining, dynamic, touching). As a film/DVD critic, I give it ***1/2 (excessive sentimentalism, issues merely touched upon, somewhat caricatural and manipulative, i.e. the good are too nice, the vilains are too cruel and India is like on postcards). This is a very good film that just falls short of being great.

Sometimes I wish I could just shut off my damn critic brain. :(

Why not a top 10 for 2008 while we're at it:

In somewhat no particular order (means I haven't made up my mind yet :) )

Slumdog Millionaire

Already discussed, plus I'm a huge Boyle fan.

La Graine et le Mulet (France)

Being old doesn't mean you can't have dreams. A beautiful film about dignity, sacrifice and family love.
Probably too slow and too "artsy" for most.

Waltz with Bashir (Israel)

Just won Best Foreign Film at the GG and a bunch of other awards in other festivals. I'd be very surprised if it doesn't win the Oscar as well (politics might sadly play a role here). Plus in my mind, it's also the best animated film of the year. Particularly relevant in the context of the current Israeli/Palestinian conflict.

The Wrestler

Great film even for non wrestling fans and great performance by Rourke. Aronofsky ("Pi", "Requiem for a Dream", "The Fountain") shows once again that he's a brilliant director.

Milk

Underrated in my book. I can't fathom why this didn't get a nomination for Best Film at the GG. To me this might very well be the best film of the year. Penn will be Rourke's main competition at the Oscars.

The Fall (India/UK/USA)

Technically a 2006 film but was only released in the US in 2008. This is only Tarsem Singh's second film (he directed "The Cell" with Jennifer Lopez in 2000). In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm, a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes.
As in "The Cell", you get breathtaking visuals, plus an astute mix of fantasy and reality that will make you laugh and cry simultaneously. Plus a wonderful performance by Catinca Untaru, the little girl who plays Alexandria. Note that this is already out on DVD.

The Dark Night

Not just a great superhero film but a very good film period, dominated by Ledger's performance.

Let the Right One In (Sweden)

Oskar, a bullied 12-year old, dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire. Don't be fooled, this is not just your run of the mill vampire story. It's a unique coming-of-age story, both horrifying and tender, that defies categorization. The kid actors are brilliant.

The Chaser (Korea)

Gripping action/crime drama with an asian twist that will keep you riveted to the edge of your seat until the very end. Based on the true story of a serial killer in Korea which kidnapped, tortured and murdered prostitutes and random old men and women before... eating them. Apparently a US remake is already in the works, from the same team who made "The Departed" ("Infernal Affairs" trilogy in HK).

...Benjamin Button

Curious indeed, from David Fincher who shows he hasn't lost his touch. Epic yet elegant and simple with wonderful performances by Pitt and Blanchett. Great film albeit not for all tastes.

Religulous

I forgot to mention one film that I really enjoyed. It's not a blockbuster or anything like that and has no chance to be nominated for any awards but I thoroughly enjoyed Religulous.

Not recommended for religious zealots with closed minds. ;)

For those who prefer to own their movies legally, "Let the Right One In" it will be available on DVD and Blu-ray on March 10th. :)

I knew about the Oscar thing. This film was not submitted by Sweden because it's not eligible. The cut-off date for release in the country of origin is September and it came out in October 2008.

Saw The Wrestler last night and must confess that, beyond the magnificent performances of Mickey Rourke and Bruce Springsteen, I was unimpressed. The plot was mighty thin and the stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold routine overplayed.

My date, however, a breathtaking blonde, formerly the star performer with a now defunct Montreal agency, was her usual charming self.

I actually own over 400 movies that I've purchased on DVD, many of these are collector's sets or special editions. I have even purchased many of the movies that I have previously downloaded. But I refuse to purchase the first DVD version of a film when you know that a extended version, director's cut and so on will eventually be released. In these cases I will download and wait for the version I want to hit the stores.

And with the film you mention...why should I wait until March 10th to see it when I can watch it now? It is also not a movie that I would purchase and most rental places will not even stock it. My downloading it will not cost the producer any money as I would not have paid to see it in the cinema either.

Actually the one I just saw was an oldie "The Big Red One", a 1980 film with Lee Marvin, Mark Hamill, and Robert Carradine. It was an excellent WWII movie. It was re-released in 2005 with reconstructed with deleted scenes added back into it.

I am hoping to see Gran Torino with Eastwood in it. The theater was too full for us to get it.

Just came back from watching Gran Torino. Excellent film, in my opinion much better that the Wrestler, Benjamin Button or Changeling. Everyone in the threater was wiping their eyes at the end of the film. I think it's a real shame that it wasn't nominated for any Oscars. I guess the Academy couldn't handle the non politically correct language used throughout the film.

Another film that opened last Friday, Taken, is also worth a look. It's not the kind of movie that will be nominated for any awards but you won't feel ripped off when leaving the theater. A great movie to see on a reduced ticket price day.

Moi c'est Le grand départ. Un film à voir absolument! Tordant!

The best movie i've seen recently is 'Slumdog Millionaire'. I wouldn't mind seeing "Milk" before the Oscars. I heard it's great, but last night heard it's not much better than other movies like 'Gran Torino' & 'Dark Knight', which were not nominated. And that nun movie with Meryl Street & Amy Adams, whose name i can't remember.

I thought the Wrestler was fabulous, except for the script, which was hackneyed and trite. Spare me, please, the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold bullshit. Mickey was fabulous; Bruce's song was great. Acting, cinematography, etc.

Milk was excellent; Gran Torino was good. Slumdog Millionaire was probably the best of the lot.
