Similar to whynot's response, I'm 45, short and slightly overweight. Never had much luck with above average women and I definitely have above average tastes. No offense but if you think you're short, fat and lonely, the last thing you should do is become complacent and take it a day at a time.
Would be better to set some goals for yourself and make plans to reach achievable milestones towards those goals.
Based on your comments it would probably best to start with "not being fat" as your primary goal because it seems to affect how you perceive yourself . Once you've addressed that your confidence should improve dramatically.
Looks matter but it shouldnt become an excuse to accept your situation if you are unhappy. If you focus on things you can improve, with a bit of work you should be able to become attractive enough to get attention from "above average women" assuming you have character and are not boring as a person.
Once you date a couple of good looking women that are so boring you'd be willing to eat your own hand just to have an excuse to run out of the restaurant, you will realise that looks didn't matter as much as you thought and probably will want to reassess your selection criteria.

I am telling you guys. Some of you may never get bored and some of you got "tired" of it. I am in the ladder category. You just don't know how liberating it is once you reach that moment when you become pretty much immune to physical beauty and that does not take hold of you.
