NJ is tough to ignore but Buffalo is my pick. Solid all-around team, excellent goal-tenders with an emphasis on the plural.

Somewhat of a long shot

I'll go with Calgary, big time tough defensemen - if they can come out of the west (will be tough to beat Detroit).

The Devils

Marty Brodeur will win it all and then sleep with another of his in-laws.

Why are the Rangers not in this poll, and yet the Canadiens are????????????? The Rangers led their division most of the season, have the league MVP in Jagr, and are the hardest working team in the NHL. The Canadiens are clearly a one-and-done playoff series team, and they should not even be in this poll. This poll is a joke!

I would assume the Canadiens are there because the Poll was created by a Canadiens fan...

Although I wouldn't bet next weeks pay check on it, I'm not so sure about the Canadiens "clearly" being a one-and-done playoff team. They have some talent and great hockey minds behind the bench. Playoffs are a funny thing, one team gets hot at the right time and you never know.

Never right off the Canadiens in the playoffs, they have this funny way of hanging around and pulling off the improbable... Just ask the Bruins.

Rangers have 1 big line and a hot goaltender and may surprise a few teams - BUT the hardest working team in the NHL??? I think not...

Didn't someone use that "hardest working team" stuff to describe the Yankees last year...

The Rangers aren't in there because they don't deserve to be in there. True, they led their division most of the year but then lost it first to the Flyers on the last day of the season then ultimately to the Devils. So, in essence they choked their way to their playoffs. If the poll was set up as who's the biggest choke team heading into the playoffs then sure, the Rangers would be in there:p . As for why the Canadiens are in there, sure they're a long shot and don't have the talent this year to take the Cup but as Spin correctly stated, my heart's with them even though my head predicts Buffalo. Besides, the poll currently shows the Habs have garnered quite a few votes :D !

NYR - adding insult to injury

First, Jagr hurt himself in game 1 by making a lame attempt to lunge after a NJD player. Then in game 2, with a 5-3 advantage, NYR Ozolinsh knocked in a goal in his own net to help give NJD another goal. Uhh... any more doubts why NYR is not in this poll???? :p

As a longshot, I'll take Montreal. However, I think the team to beat is New Jersey. They were the best team in the NHL down the stretch with a perfect 10-0-0 record. Buffalo was also pretty good and second in the stretch. Montreal was 3rd in the stretch but I think they have a tough time against NJ in the second round.

As for the Rangers, the hardest working team in hockey, EB you have a true talent for exageration. They have some talented players, but they're basically a one man team- Jagr. More importantly, they were losing momentum down the stretch with a losing record of of 4-6-0, meanwhile NJ was beating every one in sight.

And I'd say that it's a good thing you are not Gainey my friend! That would be a terrible move. I'm a huge fan of the philosophy,"if it ain't broke don't fix it." Huet may not have been the God he was the first game but he still played very solid and made 41 saves vs the 'canes 30 saves. Look at how many some of the other winning goalies made that night, Theodore made just 18 saves and let in 4, Brodeur made 25 saves and Weekes the losing goalie of the same game still only made 21 saves and let in 4.

I think the habs defense played a little better especially considering Sourray went out with an injury forcing guys like Markov, Bouillon and Rivet to play more minutes and balls to the wall in a double OT game.

I think the habs got a little lucky that Gerber sucked so bad in nets but even when the 'canes made their comeback they never gave up. Now they get to come home and have a chance to sweep the series in 4! That's something nobody could have expected! I don't see the Habs beating the Devils next round so we better enjoy our wins while we can. :)

Bryson - totally agree, especially on the NJ comment. Although Huet didn't have a shutout night - you can't do that every night - he still outplayed Carolina. I addition to the SOGs, consider that the Canes first goal was total fluke, bouncing off Habs defenseman. The second Canes goal by Brind'amour was about 3 secs after Habs finished killing a 5 on 3 power play. And the the fourth goal was also on a 5 on 3 power play. Kill rate on 5 on 3s are pretty high. So take away the fluke and stupid and questionable penaties to Habs and Huet was cleanly beat on 2 goals (one of which was a power-play). Take away the 2 bad goals by Gerber and you end up with the Habs on top 4 - 2.

BTW, second guessing Bob Gainey about who to play or anything else connected to hockey is never a safe practice, especially for amateurs like us. Besides being the top defensive forward in the game (he defined the concept) and one of the hardest working players I ever saw, he also has proven himself a top hockey manager and coach in Dallas bringing home a Stanley Cup and building Dallas into one of top hockey franchises in the league. Whatever Bob decides, you know it was best possible decision anyone could make. Plus don't forget his 2 assistants, Guy the Carb and Dougie Jarvis, again both amazing hockey players who know what winning is all about. There is no coaching staff in the NHL with their names engraved on the Stanley Cup as many times as these 3. If the Habs, have it in them (and I think they do), these 3 guys will find it and use it.

If they play their game and avoid stupid mistakes, I'm looking for the Habs to sweep in 4, mainly cause I got tickets to the Friday game:D

I can partially answer your question EagerBeaver, there were a total of 2545 goals scored on the Power Play this season, the league average scoring % while on the Power Play is 17.64%.

Unfortunatly I do not have the numbers to seperate 5 on 4 against 5 on 3 (numbers above include ALL goals scored on the Power Play).

Hmmm, having a hard time finding the stats EagerBeaver was looking for, he has now made me curious as well, I will keep on it.

So far so good...

Besides the NYR, TB also got booted out of the playoffs today. So that means we'll have a different Stanley Cup champion this year. Next up on the exit list is Dallas. I'd love to see Edmonton finish out Detroit in the next game. The Oilers played the Red Wings tough during the regular season and they've clearly outplayed the top-seeded RW in this series. Roloson has been nothing short of spectacular in goal for the Oilers compared to the RW's Legace whose lack of playoff experience is really showing.

Wanted to contribute earlyer, but was busy. I would predict Ottawa VS San Jose for the cup with Ottawa winning.

As a second choice I had Buffalo VS Dallas with Buffalo winning.

I do see San Jose taking the West. But I have Buffalo or NJD winning it all with the edge going to Buffalo.

Since we are in 2006 and the Stanley cup final usually ends early to mid June,here's what I think;
Look very closely for New Jersey.
If the deciding game is June 6,they'll win it no matter how, they'll just win the trophy on June 6 2006= 6,6,6 the number of the beast=The Devils will win it!:D
It's written all over.
