I hate to say this but I was hoping the Yankees would trade for Drew Pomeranz who would be awesome in Yankees Stadium. Sounds like a good deal for Boston if not a heist.

They did give up their #1 prospect, who also happens to be ranked #14 overall. In 4-5 years the trade may be looked upon as one of the worst trades ever made by the Red Sox. We shall see.

It's well known that the Red Sox are guilty of overhyping their prospects more than any team in baseball. Name one consistent successful starting pitcher they developed from within their system since Jon Lester. They have had many supposedly great prospects who never amounted to anything. The Red Sox have an organizational hype machine that has proven very successful over the years at bamboozling teams into accepting trades for guys the Red Sox overhyped into a status that was not deserved. They have done this better than any organization in baseball because their minor league scouts and coaches are all given institutional training in hyping and overblowing the talent of the player. I think this started with Theo Epstein. He proved very adept at acquiring young talent but less adept at developing it. The point is if you can hype up the young talent and then trade it to a bamboozled team, there is no need to develop it. That was more or less his philosophy which became an organizational institutional philosophy.

The most successful used car dealerships don't have the best cars. They have the best marketing people. It's the same principle.

BTW they are also trained to suck/jerk off members of the Boston media.

I just opened the Firefox browser and here comes a blurb about a Boston prospect, named Kopech, who just threw 105 mph. Seems he's thrown 103 previously. At 105 it must look like a shooting star to the hitter. Sorry for the catcher too.

Their pitching sucks. I don't think any team should trade a top notch prospect for a two-year rental when they have no chance to contend for the Series. They got a very good pitcher but what for? To sell a few more tickets and hot dogs? It's not worth the loss of the most valuable type of player in the sport, a top of the line pitching prospect. Bad move.

Yes, Boston's pitching does suck. You're absolutely right.

GM Terry Ryan fired by Minnesota Twins

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota Twins owner Jim Pohlad’s reverence for Terry Ryan has been evident for almost two decades, steadfastly supporting his general manager with a commitment uncommon in today’s game.

As the struggles on the field piled up over the last five years, even that enduring respect wasn’t enough to keep Ryan with the Twins.

Ryan was fired on Monday with the team holding the worst record in the American League and on pace to lose 100 games. The Twins entered the day 33-58, 21 games out of first place in the AL Central. Only Atlanta had a worse record in the majors.

"Sometimes you may have to do things that are hard," Pohlad said. "I never try to shy away from hard decisions. I own this decision. We like to bring people from within up the organization. If we have to go outside we go outside. There’s new ways of thinking. They’re not tied into old organizational ways of thinking."

Ryan said he is leaving with "immense pride in being part of the Twins organization for the better part of three decades."

Rob Antony, in his 29th season with the organization and ninth as the team’s assistant general manager, will take over on an interim basis. Pohlad said he would be considered for the permanent job.

Pohlad said he informed Ryan about a month ago that he would not be coming back in 2017. After some contemplation, Ryan told Pohlad on Friday after the All-Star break that they should make the move now.

"I believe we need to look at the way we’re doing things and we came to the conclusion the best way to do that is through a change in leadership," Pohlad said.

Whoever leads the baseball operations will have the team’s full support to make whatever changes are deemed necessary — except one.

Pohlad said manager Paul Molitor will return in 2017, provided he wants to.

"I have faith and confidence in Paul," he said. "I was all-in on the decision, along with Terry. … I was all-in with it as was everybody here. I stand by that and he will be the manager in 2017."

Pohlad said the Twins might bring in a search firm to help identify GM candidates outside the organization as well, with the goal of hiring someone before the season ends. For now, Antony has full power to make trades and moves up through the trade deadline in two weeks.

One of the most respected figures in baseball, Ryan spent two stints as general manager of the Twins, taking over in September 1994 and helping the franchise emerge from a decade worth of futility to become one of the models for small-market success in the early 2000s. He helped build one of baseball’s strongest farm systems and made several shrewd trades that turned the Twins into a team that won four AL Central tiles in five seasons.

"I’m grateful for the leadership opportunities provided by the Pohlad family," he said. "The collaboration and talents of my colleagues in the front office; the hard work and dedication of our manager, coaches and clubhouse personnel; the commitment and professionalism of our players; the passion and attention to detail of our minor league staff and scouts; and most importantly, the incredible support of our fans."

Ryan stepped down after the 2007 season but returned in November 2011 after hand-picked successor Bill Smith could not continue the team’s success.

The Twins are in the middle of their fifth losing season in the last six years, and a 2015 season that saw them return to contention in the division proved not to be enough when the team sank to the bottom of the AL this this summer.

"We’ve hurt our brand by playing the way we have on the field," Pohlad said.

Ryan handed out big money to pitchers Ervin Santana, Ricky Nolasco and Phil Hughes in an effort to address the team’s biggest weakness in the starting rotation, but all have been disappointments.

The decisions to sign South Korean slugger Byung-Ho Park, keep veteran third baseman Trevor Plouffe this off-season and move promising youngster Miguel Sano from third base to right field all proved ill-fated. Sano was injured while playing the outfield and is back at third base, Plouffe is on the disabled list and his trade value has been diminished, and Park has been sent to Triple-A to try to ease his transition to the United States.

"Whoever comes into this role is going to come into it with a much better minor league system than the one Terry inherited the second time around," Twins President Dave St. Peter said.

The midseason firing is a highly uncharacteristic move by the Pohlad family, long known in baseball circles for loyalty and continuity. Jim Pohlad has made no secret of his admiration for Ryan, saying as late as last year that the GM could hold his post for as long as he wanted.

"Maybe the light should have gone on earlier," Pohlad said. "But the light went on and we need to look at our organization and the way we do things."

What an embarrassment tonight for the Orioles. Swarzak threw 2.2 hitless innings and then Nick Goody came in and struck out the side in the 9th inning. When it was all done 3.2 hitless innings by the Yankees B team relievers. Yankees now back over .500.

Yankees now ‘full bore’ in Chapman trade talks

The New York Yankees last had a losing season in 1992, so it’s still a little jarring to see them in sell mode, but with a middling 46-46 record their playoff chances are remote at best.

As a result, speculation has surrounded pending free agents like Aroldis Chapman and Carlos Beltran in recent weeks. That speculation now appears to be leading somewhere, as ESPN’s Buster Olney reported Monday that the Yankees are going “full bore” in shaping possible deals for the likes of Chapman.

The Washington Nationals, Texas Rangers and Cleveland Indians are among those involved, Olney reported. The San Francisco Giants also appear to be a logical candidate for relief help, though they aren’t mentioned directly in the ESPN report.

Chapman, 28, has a 2.22 ERA with 40 strikeouts and eight walks in 28.1 innings this year. Though he recently hit 105 mph on the radar gun, he might not even be the most attractive trade chip in New York’s bullpen. Fellow left-hander Andrew Miller has 70 strikeouts in 41.1 innings for a 1.31 ERA and he’s set to earn just $9 million per season for 2017-18.

Beltran has 19 home runs with a .303 batting average and an .887 OPS this year.

Nice to see Cleveland doing so well. The Cubs are winning again even if it's against a non-competitor the last time. I am surprised the Giants lost two in a row against a team with such questionable starting pitching.

Still hoping it's Cleveland and Chicago in the World Series. Chicago first but either would be great. A double for Cleveland or breaking the record losing streak for Chicago. GO CUBS!

Things got back to normal today and the Orioles soundly beat the Yankees. The O's are tied with the Red Sox, and the Jays are only a game back. The Yankees are 6 1/2 games back.

The next couple of months should be very interesting!!

Jays scouting Sabathia, Cashner

by Michael Hoad, Sportsnet

The Toronto Blue Jays scouted CC Sabathia and Andrew Cashner‘s starts on Thursday, reports Jon Heyman.

Toronto is in the market for starting pitching help with all-star Aaron Sanchez potentially moving to a relief role before season’s end.

There is also some degree of uncertainty surrounding the health of Marco Estrada, who makes his return from a back injury on Friday night. Back issues have landed Estrada on the disabled list twice in 2016.

Sabathia, who Heyman notes may not be available in trade talks, has pitched to a 5-8 record with a 4.04 ERA in 17 starts for the New York Yankees this year. The left-hander is a 10-and-5 player, meaning he could veto a move to any team.

New York currently sits 5.5 games out of a playoff spot and it remains to be seen whether or not it will be a seller come the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline.

Cashner is in the midst of a disappointing campaign with the struggling San Diego Padres with a 4.79 ERA in 15 starts. He’s been prone to surrendering the long ball this season, giving up a career-worst 1.4 home runs per nine innings. The 29-year-old is set to hit free agency at the end of the season.

Yesterday I heard a report about the failing relationship between the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez. According to ESPN, the Yankees were close to deciding to release A-Rod and eat the rest of his contract. It would have been quite a statement on how the Yankees feel about his value to the team. There was a meeting between Rodriguez and Steinbrenner, other no doubt were present. It was decided to keep him on the team for now.

Also in the discussion was some info on how the Yankees would handle Rodriguez hitting HR number 700. The idea was no celebration. It would be a nothing special event to the team office for the most part. Is that because he admitted to using roids while with Texas and got caught while with the Yankees? Is it because of his constant denials before being caught? Is it because of his large decline over the last two years? Or is it everything about what the Yankees have gone through with him while paying and extraordinary salary rate.

Unfortunately, A-Rod has been getting a steady diet of fastballs and he isn't getting on them. I saw the same thing happen to Chili Davis in his last year in the majors with the Yankees. Chili could not get around on fastballs, it was all weak contact- pop ups and strikeouts, no balls being driven. The pitching pattern on A-Rod is to give him stuff that is hard. When most players get to around 37 they have the same issues. ARod is almost 41.

His stats are ugly- a negative WAR for first time as a regular player and a .256 OBP. The stats are not misleading, he is at the end of the line.
