The Goose is throwing heat again, but this time it is directed at Jose Bautista and the "nerds running baseball":

Gossage is entitled to his views, but i was watching a sports talk show earlier today and the topic came up. I agree with some of the members of the panel that Gossage's comments had some racial overtones. He seems to have a problem with the large number of latin players now playing MLB and likely with the large amount of money they make, which has been a problem over the years with older former players. He doesn't seem to grasp that the game has changed since his years in the game and that some players openly demonstrate their passion for the game.

Yankee brass met with him today and although no one will report it, it was likely to put him in line and tell him to cool off and get on with the times.

By the way, this idiot has no business being in the hall-of-fame.

The Yankees met with Gossage mainly because he made his comments while wearing a Yankees uniform as a guest spring training instructor:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...-meets-new-york-yankees-brass-regret-comments

From what I gather it was a cordial conversation and Cashman and Girardi told him he can spout his opinions all he wants when he is on his own, but when he wears the pinstripes, those 2 do the talking and he shuts the fuck up.

Gossage played in a different era of baseball. He is in the Hall of Fame and deserves to be, as a guy who many times had to pitch 3 inning saves based on the different way bullpens were used in those days. In Gossage's day, the bullpen was mainly comprised of one good reliever who couldn't hack it as a starter- usually guys like Gossage who threw hard but had 1 or 2 pitches - and a collection of failed starters and long time minor leaguers who were jacks of all trades and masters of none, guys who had 3 or 4 pitches but none were that great, or guys like Dick Tidrow, who had one specialty pitch that was good for an inning or two. Most modern major league bullpens, on the other hand, have at least 3-4 guys who throw 95 mph, and they are brought in an inning at a time.

The sport has evolved, but a lot of the older players do not like the evolution. Guys like Joe Morgan, Pete Rose and even Nolan Ryan have been equally critical of modern baseball culture while using slightly different language than Gossage did.

Just realised there are a couple of preseason games coming very soon at the big "O", although i would much more enjoy seeing my two favorite teams, the Yankees and Blue Jays play each other, i suppose i can stand to watch the Blue Jays beat up the red sox for a few hours. Anyone know of anyone selling tickets for decent seats besides the scalper sites?

It is just Gambling 101. The Cubs have a huge irrational and emotional fan base, many of whom want to make a bet (and frame a photocopy of it) for the year the Cubs win it all, which might well be this year. They are so irrational that a group of Cubs fan politicians in DC, which once included Dick Cheney, have an occasional get together to discuss the Cubs and all political discussions are prohibited, according to the Wall Street Journal. When the casino knows that a ton of bets will be made for a given team based on emotion instead of logic, they adjust the odds to protect themselves. I agree with you that those odds are badly skewed, and if they offered an inverse bet that the Cubs would not win the 2016 World Series based on those exact same current odds that they will, it would be the bet of a lifetime.

The Red Sox had the same type of fan base for 87 years. Cubs haven't won anything since 1907 and 1908. That's 108 years. Have a heart Patron. Give the Cubbie fans some hope.

I hope the Cubs win the World Series, I was just pointing out that sports betting has terrible odds. Not only do fans mess up the odds by betting as fans instead of as statisticians, but you never know how the players are betting. Like you insinuated, I think the Cubs are 10-1 through 15-1, just like the Cardinals, the Mets, the Pirates, the Dodgers and the Giants, and several other teams.

Did these players go to Pete Rose's School of Baseball Betting? ;)

The 2016 Regular Season starts this Sunday with St. Louis playing at Pittsburgh at 1:05 PM.

Are you guys ready for the season?

I think there will be some surprises this year. This will be the year the Blue Jays will win the AL East and perhaps win the AL Championship. Chicago will not win the NL Central. Either Pittsburgh or St. Louis will prevail. Chicago may win a wild card. But who knows, the Cubbies may live up to their hype?

Will Arizona play as well as they have done in Spring Training?

And yes, I think the young players of the Philadelphia Phillies will give the defending NL East Champs Mets a run for their money. The Nationals may prevail also. Like the NL Central, it will be a 3 team race into September.

It should be an interesting season.

Pablo Sandoval has lost his job to newcomer Travis Shaw. Sandoval will be warming up the bench for the opener and likely many more games this season. Manager John Farrell, whose judgement cannot be questionned since he's a World Series winner, has finally had enough of the overweight and out-of-shape third baseman, whose numbers have been consistently dipping for the past several seasons.

Meanwhile, Hanley Ramirez is still a member of the Red Sox.

Those Red Sox. Allen Craig is a permanent member of the Pawtucket (AAA) Red Sox far from his glory days at the St. Louis Cardinals. Craig is not even a member of the Sox 40 man roster. Will Pablo and Hanley be trade bait for some bat boys and ball girls. Are they heading to join Craig soon?

David Price is the only worthwhile addition. He didn't stay with the Blue Jays. But I don't think the Blue Jays need Price this year. They will have an awesome offense and a decent pitching staff.

AL East prediction:

Blue Jays
Yankees
Red Sox
Orioles
Rays

Yes, the Red Sox will improve from the basement, but there will be no rise to the top, as falsely advertised by some.

I love and appreciate the fan support this weekend in Montreal, but as i was watching the game earlier, i realized why i had stopped going to the games back in the last years the Expos were in town. The Big 'O' is a bad place to watch a mlb game. The place wasn't built for baseball. It's basically a stadium built for track and field competitions. I used to come to Mtl in the early 2000's for the games and even had bought tickets weeks prior to the games. By the time i'd settled in Mtl, i'd miss half the games i was supposed to attend. Didn't feel like being indoors when it was so nice outside, plus i hated the long subway ride to the stadium. I also hated the atmosphere inside....especially the noise level. It sounded like i was underwater.

Big win by the Jays today over Tampa!!!

The Jays beat the Rays and starter Chris Archer 5-3. Marcus Stroman pitched a very strong 8 innings for the winning team. Go Jays!! :D

The standing ovation he got every time he stepped up to the plate was mind-boggling if you ask me. Must have been a lot of Red Sox fans at the game.
