Moncada is one of those guys teams in need of a power hitter drool over because he's built like a linebacker and can hit a ton, that unless it's a breaking ball which he has shown a real weakness against. The posting fee was about $63 million, a huge sum. It wasn't specifically explained on WEEI but it was inferred the White Sox now take over a chunk of that cost, considered a great trade off versus the contract for Sale.

Few Boston fans are upset. Mostly it's those in love with great prospects and have less faith in proven players, a logic which most fans and professional analysts strongly disagree with...as long as the farm system is not generally gutted by giving up too much for the trade. Generally speaking few are negative about the trade in view of the great pitching staff they now gain.

Boston also picked up Tyler Thornburg from the Brewers to bolster their relievers who had a 0.94 WHIP giving the Sox a pretty solid bullpen. "We feel we gave up some good young players but it’s also a situation where I think stabilizing the bullpen for us in that eighth inning role has really been a necessity, something we really put our focus on. Now at the back end, you have guys like Craig Kimbrel and you have Thornburg and then you’re in a position where guys like Joe Kelly and Matt Barnes and Heath Hembree, in addition to anyone from the left-hand side.”

Now the only large question left is who will replace those numbers put up by the legendary David Ortiz at DH? If the team hits like last year and holds off other teams from scoring given all the now promising pitching staff from end to end the Sox could be a fearsome prospect to play against, with everyone healthy and giving the production they are capable of.

I'm very surprised they haven't made a stronger effort at obtaining Edwin Encarnacion. I think he would have been perfect for their ball team and ballpark.

According to Buster Olney. the White Sox are "kicking some butt" with their winter meetings deals, the latest getting 3 starting pitchers for Adam Eaton:

http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18230565/washington-nationals-acquire-adam-eaton-white-sox

Hard to believe the Nats would ask for so little in return for 3 possible starting rotation pitchers. Apparently Eaton has a rep as a very selfish player and the White Sox were eager to move his selfish ass. Tim Kurkjian said that the key guy in the trade is Lucas Giolito, a big young righty who is thought to be a possible #1 starter on talent but the Nats felt he was soft and gave up on him, per Kurkjian.

White Sox harvested a major haul of prospects but now they have to develop them.

If the rouge hosers win a championship with Sale being a major contributor within the next couple of years then good trade but if not and Moncada becomes the next big thing like most are predicting then they will have severly lost this trade by epic proportions. Has Sale ever had Tommy John Surgery yet?

Who says they haven't. Dombrowski feigned disinterest in Sale then OOOOPS! He has a reputation for going after "big names". With Ortiz gone the DH production will be hard to replace. Who knows what Dombrowski will do. Keeping deals quiet makes the process easier.

Adam Eaton and Chris Sale are two players I have a deep respect for. Eaton was always so clutch and he flies around the bases.

Chris Sale - In all my years I have seen the Tigers tee off on him once. We beat him often but he was always solid. I watched a Chris Sale Justin Verlander duel in person during JV's Cy Young year. JV gave up a lead off HR and then the two pitched flawless until Delvin Young hit a three run HR to win it in the late innings.

My favorite Chris Sale moment was this past year when he used a pair of scissors to destroy enough White Sox "throw-back" uniforms so that the team didn't have to wear them for a start vs the Tigers. That was funny.

I saw that the White Sox were the winners in the off season. We will see. Prospects are just that: Prospects.

I can't really blame him. Those 'throw-back' uniforms were fucking ugly even when they used them way back when. They looked like pyjamas.

Cashman Praised As Most Effective GM Since 2015

Brian Cashman quietly finished 3rd in GM of the year voting to the GMs for Chicago and Cleveland. I agree in granting the victors the spoils, but Cashman finished 3rd with a team that didn't even make the playoffs, which is a true testament to his brilliance and all the moves he made to get the Yankees infused with younger talent. More on his GM exploits here:

Clay Bucholz was traded to the Phillies earlier today for a 2nd base prospect who's hit for .300 throughout his minor league career.

To think that at one time the Expos had three hall-of-famers on the same line-up. Raines, Carter and Dawson...

Back in the late 1970s the Expos had arguably the best outfield in baseball with Andre Dawson, Ellis Valentine and Warren Cromartie. I thought Valentine was actually a better player than Dawson or Cromartie but he sustained a beaning and some other injury, abused drugs and was never the same again. There have been lots of players who were better players than some guys in the HOF but due to injuries never had long careers. I still think Don Mattingly 1984-1987 was the best first baseman I have ever seen, offensively and defensively. He won 9 Gold Gloves, a batting title and MVP award but hurt his back attempting to break the MLB record for homering in 8 consecutive games which he shares with Ken Griffey Jr. Griffey Jr. and Mattingly are the two best players I have seen based on all around talent at their respective positions.

Regarding Rock Raines, his stolen base % kind of speaks for itself. To me that is his most impressive accomplishment.

Ellis Valentine had one of the best arms I ever saw. The drugs, as you said, had the best of him, saddly.

Andre Dawson never had a drug problem, but his knees could'nt take the Big O's artificial turf, so he left for Chicago and was rejuvenated.

With the help of Dawson, Raines got clean and had a long career, won the World Series with the Yankees.
What is great is that he will go in the HOF as an Expos!

Any team (incl. Montreal) could have signed Dawson. The owners were colluding among them and were later found guilty of this. Dawson eventually presented the Cubs with a blank cheque and told them to put down any amount they wanted. If i remember correctly, they put down $1 million, which was grossly lower than what he should have got.

Yeah, it did not end well for Dawson in Montréal. Owners were cheap during the 70-80s, and he was finished in their minds.
