Complacency may be a problem, especially with returning managers. Marcello Lippi did the same thing in '10 with Italy. Relying too much on the "old guard." Now with Germany going out, that's four of the last five champions that have failed to get out of the group stage. [Brazil made it to the quarter finals in 2006.]

The decision to reinsert Khadira is being widely criticized across the Internet. It will be interesting to see if Low survives the torrent of criticism on moves that backfired.

Equally disappointing is the way Germany lost today. Loew will take a lot of heat for putting Khedira and Özil in the starting lineup. And justifiably so. It’s puzzling that he would so drastically change the lineup that had produced the last win and given the team much needed momentum.

No because both team are qualified already, someone correct me if I am wrong. So both will probably rest top player and send a B team. Avoid yellow cards. Play a boring game with will end up in a 0 - 0 tie ;)

Which team will play Brasil - Mexico winner for quarter final after a 0-0 tie ? Belgium and England are equal 6pts +6

Has any defending World Cup Champion ever been last in their group in the next World Cup?

France in 2002 I think.

Dalila I don't know the answer but I hope it's Belgium to give an easier opponent to England so they can win and advance. That would be good to have the english stop whining that they never do anything good at the WC despite hosting the number 1 league in the world in their country ;)

Cheers,

German football is all about technique...however, the trend is towards agile players...and they are not agile especially in the back...they are too big and slow and it surely does not look like they have adapted to a more agile and speedier style of play!

It's unfortunate for Germany - however it should not be a surprise - that clearly they will have to adapt to a more "agile" style of play.

There are better teams other than Germany in this year's WC!

.....I would however agree that more than likely overall the most money being payed out in total is in the English league.

No surprise there, The English Premier League is tops in all of Europe with almost double the revenue of its closest rival league. As a result, players get paid top $$$.

In terms of revenue (based on the recently published numbers by Deloitte) for the 2016/17 season:

1) English Premier League: Euro 5.3 billion
2) Spanish La Liga: Euro 2.8 billion
3) German Bundesliga: Euro 2.8 billion
4) Italian Serie A: Euro 2.1 billion
5) France Ligue 1: Euro 1.6 billion

It's amazing to me the number of bars in New York City where Eurodudes watching the Premiere League literally take over the place and dominate it.

I will never forget going to a large sports bar in Spring Street in November 2010. I went in specifically to watch the Maui Classic College Basketball Tournament on one of their many big screen TVs. At the time, Kemba Walker and the UConn basketball team were on the start of a season long roll that saw them not only win that Maui Classic Tournament (blowing out Kentucky in the championship game), but also the NCAA championship game.

While I was watching, I slowly began to notice that everyone else in the bar was filing in at the other end of the bar to watch a Premiere League game. I have no idea who was playing but when the first (and only) goal was scored, the entire bar exploded with a deafening roar. All the dudes in the bar were Eurodudes from England and Ireland. There are lots of them in the construction industry in NYC.

On another occasion in another sports bar in Manhattan, some time in September, a buddy of mine walked in and we were very surprised to see that on the bar's biggest screen TV a Premiere League game in progress. We had expected the Yankees game to be on that TV. Again, a large throng of Eurodudes were in the bar. My buddy, a NYC native, muttered in anger to me "Premiere League over the Yankees should fucking NEVER be allowed at any bar in this city. It's not right...........it's a fucking disgrace!!!!!!!!!!"

The English Premier League is a misnomer. If you look at the roster of the top tier teams, the majority of the starters are foreigners. It’s a truly global league. What makes it entertaining is how competitive it has become.

...In contrast, the revenue numbers for NFL Football is US$13 billion for 2016 compared to US$17 billion for the Top European Football leagues!

I think the NFL certainly and even MLB generate more revenue than the EPL, if that's what were calling it. Among domestic soccer leagues EPL has huge TV contracts and a bigger worldwide fanbase yet most of the very best players still want to play for Real and Barcelona, if not Bayern and PSG. Add Athletico Madrid and others and it becomes harder to argue that English teams are more competitive than Spanish ones. Spanish clubs have also won most of the Champions & Europa League trophies in the last ten years. And until Liverpool's relative success this year in reaching the CL final, English clubs have been underperforming in relation to their Spanish rivals. And I say this as a fan of the Prem. So, oddly, the money has yet to attract the very best players.

Those stats mean nothing. The true stat that should be discussed is revenue per game played. The NFL plays a 16 game season per team. How many games do the Premiere League teams play? So tell me what the revenue is per game played, I do not care about the total revenue for all games.

The very nature of the sport of NFL football prevents more than 16 games being played regular season although there are potentially 20 games for teams reaching the Super Bowl.

A 38 game NFL season would be impossible- nobody would be able to play that many NFL games in one year. The NFL has pushed for an 18 game regular season for years now, so as to make more money, and the Players Union has pushed back because 16 games is more than they can handle. Injuries and concussions pile up for NFL teams over a season so they are kind of maxed out where they are now.

The NFL salary rules have encouraged many teams to churn younger and cheaper players onto their rosters. It is much harder for veteran NFL players to (1) hang on to their health and sustain their careers and (2) if they do (1), get paid. Only a few guys in the NFL get paid really well (usually QBs), but I watch how teams churn in younger players at rookie salary scales and it is really kind of an interesting business model. This is why you see guys suddenly retire from the NFL many times, it's because the punishment they take is not worth the money they are making. It is totally a younger man's sport now.
