I heard on WFAN this morning that the NFL may set a record for the number of backup QBs starting for one weekend, this coming weekend. The Thursday game, and the 2 Saturday games, will feature all backup QBs on both sides- so 6 to start things off. One caller suggested that the NFL modify rules to allow a 12th man on offense whose exclusive job is to protect the QB. Boomer Esiason laughed this off, saying that the "refs are supposed to be the 12th man with this same task." I think the rules and officiating have been QB friendly. The problem is the athletes playing in the NFL have gotten bigger, faster and stronger and the resulting collisions more violent, but the human bodies playing the game haven't developed shells like a turtle. And even the helmet technology advances can only do so much. When a head is violently whipped against the ground like CJ Stroud's was yesterday against the Jets, a concussion is going to happen. You just can't totally protect the head and make it injury proof with these kind of collisions and impacts at high speed and force. Laws of physics do not get suspended because a game of football is being played.
