Then why is Iggy allowed to do so in the free-for-all hockey thread, as he has done on many, many occasions?

It's not crying - it's trying to create a level playing field. I - and many others - am sick and tired of you getting away with your BS and of you breaking of the rules, while if people respond in kind they are threatened or suspended by Mod 8.

Either we have rules or we don't - no problem in either case - but it should be the same for everyone.

If there ARE rules, then YOU should also be suspended for breaking them.

If there ARE NOT rules, no problem - I'll be happy to destroy you, as usual, in a no-holds-barred match.

But it CANNOT be a case of you doing what you want and the Mods threatening or suspending the rest of us as if we follow suit.

Mod 8 just put a post protecting the precious Leaf thread but he seems to have no problem ignoring your constant BS.

So it's the players and the GM that suck? Personally, I always look to Wall Street for baseball information.

The youth movement continues in the Bronx. The Yankees replace Robinson Cano with 37 year old Brian Roberts, who used to be good. The Yankees replace Boone Logan with Matt Thornton, who used to be good.

This must be a comedy. There can be no other explanation. Actually, maybe there is an explanation. Maybe the Yankees are trying to win the 2005 pennant.

Seems I'm not the only one who think the Yankees are a great 2005 club. Here's the venerable Joe Posnanski:

It just gets better and better with the New York Yankees. They just signed Brian Roberts.

I wrote before (in my Ichiro Suzuki essay for the 100 greatest players) that this Yankees team would look awfully good … in 2006. But by essentially replacing Robinson Cano with Brian Roberts, they have — in a weird way — gotten even older. Roberts best year was probably 2005, which you will note is actually BEFORE 2006.

Here is the Yankees starting lineup … and what was probably each player’s best season:

C: Brian McCann (2006 with Atlanta): .333/.388/.572, 24 homers, 93 RBis.

1B: Mark Teixeira (2005 with Texas): .301/.379/.575, 43 homers, 144 RBIs, 112 runs, Gold Glove.

2B: Brian Roberts (2006 with Baltimore): .314/.387/.515, 45 doubles, 18 homers, 27 steals, 92 runs.

SS: Derek Jeter (1999 with Yankees): .349/.438/.552 with 24 homers, 102 RBIs, 134 runs, 219 hits.

3B: Alex Rodriguez: (2007 with Yankees): .314/.422/.645, 54 homers, 156 RBIs, 143 runs, 24 steals.

LF: Alfonso Soriano (2002 with Yankees): .300/.332/.547, 39 homers, 41 steals, 102 RBIs, 128 runs.

CF: Jacoby Ellsbury (2011 with Boston): .321/.376/.552, 32 homers, 105 RBis, 119 runs, 39 steals, Gold Glove.

RF: Ichiro Suzuki (2004 with Seattle): .372/.414/.455 with 262 hits, 101 runs, 36 steals, Gold Glove.

DH: Carlos Beltran 2006 with Mets): : ..275/.388/.594, 41 homers, 116 RBIs, 127 runs 18 steals, Gold Glove.

In case you’re wondering, that averages out to the year 2005. This team would have peaked in 2005, even if Ellsbury was playing for Lowell of the New York Penn League at the time.

And, don’t forget, this team still has Vernon Wells (best year probably 2003 — .317 with league leading 49 doubles, 215 hits and 373 total bases) and Brett Gardner (best year a more recent 2010 — .383 OBP, 97 runs).

Oh, if only the Yankees had a Hot Tub Time Machine — or the phone booth from Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure — they could put together one of the greatest teams in baseball history. Heck, let’s say it, if they could have all nine of those players, in their prime, that would be the greatest team ever. You have (by performance) three SURE Hall of Famers (A-Rod, Jeter, Ichiro), a possible Hall of Famer (Beltran) and four All-Star superstars.

Instead, Tex is old and played just 15 games last year, Jeter is old and played in 17 games, A-Rod is old and with a pending suspension that would last more than a year, Ichiro is old and has not even managed a .300 average since 2010, Roberts is old and is hitting .231/.289/.344 the last three seasons. Soriano and Beltran are old too, though they still had something left last year. Even McCann and Ellsbury, who are like One Direction compared to this gang of Rolling Stones, will be 30 on Opening Day.

Michael Schur and I argue about the Yankees all the time. I believe this team is about to become an all-time fiasco … something that has been building for a few years now with these gigantic and back-loaded contracts that, sooner or later, come due. I look at this creaky team — and the fact the Yankees had to pay a huge luxury tax just to put it together — and see doom.

He does not. He believes that there is some sort of evil empire nectar that they give players when they arrive so that as bad as the Yankees may LOOK to outsiders, they will always find a way to win. Always. Ichiro will suddenly hit .350 again. Roberts will become a .300 hitter, Tex will win the Triple Crown. Whatever miracles have to happen, Michael believes, will happen. He has his points. Even last year, when just about every single thing that could go wrong for the Yankees did, the Yankees still won 85 games and were mild postseason contenders into September.

I guess we’ll find out. I don’t know, to me this team looks like one of those Steinbrenner specials when the aging corpses of Jesse Barfield and Claudell Washington and Jose Cruz and Steve Kemp and Mike Easler and Steve Sax and Andy Hawkins and Scott Sanderson and Pascual Perez were clanging around. But, hey, you know, some of those teams did win a bit. And when you put together a team of players who were, at least at one time, great players …

… you can’t tell me the Yankees aren’t looking into buying one of those hot tubs on Ebay.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus

Masahiro Tanaka got a huge gift from his team in Japan this Christmas, he is coming to America (and Toronto) to join MLB next season.

CC, Tanaka, Kuroda, Nova, Pineda, along with the recent additions of Ellsbury, McCann and Beltran, plus a healthy Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira (and Cashmans other moves/tweaks to come before april) = contender status once again. SO much for all the talk of 189mil. As soon as the reports came out how much the Yankee Brand lost from ticket sales and on down the line, no way was Hal not gonna put a much better team on the field in 2014, no matter what the cost.

Not a given the Yanks land Tanaka, but the only way he does not come to the Boogie Down Bronx is "IF" he wants to play for someone else, money wont be the issue.

I have a feeling he wants to be a Yankee for a few reasons. 1. It's the Yankees, 2. Kuroda. Any players from Japan who come over and have great success like Kuroda has pitching in the Major Leagues is a hero back home and to be able to learn from one of Japan's heros is a huge bonus 3. Ichiro (if he stays) is a legend both here and in Japan, and a total rock star back home. 4. He has a chance to play for a Championship every season in NY.

Merry Christmas Baseball Fans!

The Jays signed Muni Kawasaki yesterday, which seemed like a Xmas gift to the fanbase, which fell in love with him last season. Who knows, maybe he was signed for other reasons.....such as possibly trying to lure Tanaka to Toronto?

I'd love to see Tanaka join the Jays, but he won't come cheap. Any team signing him is likely to break the bank in order to get him signed to a contract.

Doc,

I agree it is gonna be a huge expense to lure Tanaka to any team. I'd imagine it will take at least 6 years and 100mil, likely more with the heavy hitters like NYY, LAD and Seattle and possibly the Cubs all looking like front runners. I still say he will choose the place he wants to play more so than just because of the money, although he will be set for life wherever he goes. If the Yanks dont land him, i would love to see him end up in Toronto.

How much will a team really spend on a questionable player? Dice K was a huge bust in the long run and it took Yu Darvish a couple of years, just for the fanfare and cost it will probably be a big market team that can only afford him but still Yanks can't afford another questionable starter on an already shaky rotation, be very interesting to see the price and where he goes.

Considering all the bidders that will be involved, my guess is that it will take a lot more, perhaps as high as 8 and $160. I doubt the Yankees will be foolish enough to spend what it will take to land him, considering how badly they've been burned before. My best guess is the Cubs or Mariners.

I still say he will choose the place he wants to play more so than just because of the money.
If he does, he'll be the first guy in history. Yes, you have guys like Kuroda and Napoli, who took a couple of million less than they could have gotten to stay in New York and Boston, but 99.9% of the time, the guy takes the biggest paycheck. When you consider that Tanaka will be getting his first big paycheck, you can bet he's going to go for the biggest bag of loot dangled before his eyes.

Yankees aggressively pursuing Tanaka.
As are about 10 other teams. Personally I don't see the Yankees signing Tanaka. With as many teams as there are after him, SOMEBODY is going to give him a VERY stupid contract. When you consider just how many stupid contracts the Yankees have been burned on, I just don't think Cashdollar is going to offer him anything as ridiculously stupid as he's going to get elsewhere.

There are some red-flags tied to Tanaka. While he's got a plus slider and a near Uehara-caliber split, his fastball is only in the low 90s and quite flat. He's not going to get that FB past major league hitters. He's also got an astonishing number of innings on his arm for a 25 year old pitcher.

Hello Boys,

I'm sure you meant to say...HISTORY!!! ;)

I haven't heard much about Tanaka except the hype. But some of the guys on WEEI mentioned the same fastball concerns as Rumples did above, along with the wear on his arm. The gist of it was Tanaka may not be better than a number 2 pitcher in reality, somewhere quite better than Matsuzaka but definitely firmly beneath Darvish.

I hope the Red Sox are not thinking of offering anything like some of the desperate teams with too much money on their hands might.

BTW: I also would not put it past Cashburner to do something nuts for Tanaka with the pitching issues the Yankees are stuck with.

Cheers,

Merlot

True, but it's going to take a lot more than just Tanaka to fix the Yankees' pitching miseries.
