Word has it that baseball has significantly increased steroid testing this season so you may be correct Mr.T
Is there anybody else besides rumples and I that find Ortiz's paltry .63 BA very troubling, not looking good for Mr Ortiz, looks like he is on the decline for good.

If preseason is any indication it looks like the Yankees will own the Red Sox this year, I expect the Vegas odds to close between the Tigers and the Yankees before the season begins, the tough question that I have trouble figuring out is which one of the Yankee pitchers will throw the first perfect game or no hitter this year, tough pick.

Trade Rumors!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning's Post is reporting that the Yankees have their eyes on the DBacks' Didi Gregorious or Seattle's Nick Franklin as a reserve infielder now who will be a starting 2B at some point in the future (perhaps even later this year when Roberts inevitably gets hurt). The article suggested that David Phelps and/or one of the catchers will be the key pieces in any such deal, the Yankees parting with Phelps only if they are very comfortable with Pineda's health.

Of course Nuno and Warren would still be around as possible replacement 5th starters.

Cervelli and Phelps seems like too much for one of those guys, but both seem to be trade bait as they are superfluous at their respective positions. However I don't like the idea of giving away a major league starting pitcher and a major league calibre starting catcher (which Cervelli was before he broke his hand last year and has looked the part again this spring) for one of two guys who cannot win a starting job with DBacks/Mariners.

http://nypost.com/2014/03/20/mets-yankees-tied-up-in-the-same-shortstop-intrigue/

If one of these guys have to be traded I would prefer Cervelli be the guy as the Yankees have extreme depth at catcher with Romine and Murphy both capable enough to be solid backups and Sanchez maybe 2 years away at most to being ready for prime time.

Yankee pitching has now moved up to second in ERA behind the Rays in the AL and third overall in the Majors, if it wasn't for the fact that the Yankees have played four more games than the Rays they would surely be in first, very impressive pitching by the Yankee pitching staff this preseason.

Hahaha, the operative words being bolded above! Love the enthusiasm though JT. Can't wait for the real season to begin.

The Yankees pitching staff has been on fire for like a solid week now, teams just are not hitting or scoring against them despite these teams playing in front of large crowds and playing their regulars. I don't recall a week of pitching like this from the Yankees.

Looks like the Jays/Mets games next weekend at the Big "0" are almost sold out. Just checked for 2 tickets to each game and fridays the best available was in the 400 section and Saturdays game for 2 seats i could get box seats very very close to the field but one was in one row and the other the next row. Always wait to long!

Mattingly, Dodgers Having Major Issues With Puig

Truth be told, when I saw Yasiel Puig after the Dodgers brought him up last year, I though I was watching the most talented young outfield prospect that I had seen in Major League Baseball since Ken Griffey Jr. came up (Griffey was the best young prospect I have ever seen in my life, a simply amazing all around player before injuries ruined the second hal of his career).

I can tell from Mattingly's comments in this article that he is seriously at odds with Dodgers management as to what to do with this kid and this is a clubhouse issue that will need to be watched:

http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/mlb/...on-mattingly-upset-yasiel-puig-field-behavior

For those who never had the chance to see Donnie Baseball in his prime, he was the best all around major league first basemen I have ever seen, won the AL MVP, and then had a back injury ruin the second half of his career. I met Donnie in person. He is one of my 3 favorite Yankees of all time (Munson and Matsui, the other 2) and a non-nonsense old school player who never complained, never made excuses for poor performances, always hustled, was smart as fucking hell both as a hitter and as a defensive player, and made zero mental mistakes on the ball field. He is clearly fed up.

"Pineda could be a difference maker" according to Phil Rogers from MLB.com, the article also states that other team scouts have been "so impressed" with Pineda that they say "he could be a middle of the rotation guy for many teams".

I have not seen so many write ups on the Yankees as I have seen this spring training, lots and lots of people are excited about their chances, as far as the Red Sox go all I'm hearing is "Crickets".

He would have looked great in a Met uniform

Beaver- I'd be interested to hear what you thought about Keith Hernandez versus Mattingly

Smuler, Hernandez was very good and in the mid 1980s he and Mattingly were the best all around first basemen in the NL and AL respectively. I think both have many gold gloves (Mattingly has 9) but when I watched Mattingly he looked like a cat with his reflexes. Mattingly turned the 3-6-3 double play faster than anyone I have ever seen (he was THE master of it). He had the ability to field and get rid of the ball in one motion, and made perfect throws so the shortstop would not get creamed. He was also tremendous scooping wicked one hoppers and he did it in a way that made it look easy. He had tremendous hands, lightning reflexes and a quick release, the total package as a corner infielder.

One thing I liked about Hernandez is he used to go and talk to a pitcher who was having problems on his own initiative. Like Mattingly, Hernandez was an extremely smart ballpplayer and knew when there was some problem that needed talking about. In their respective primes Mattingly had slightly more power than Hernandez and was capable of hitting upper deck home runs at Yankees Stadium of which I recall him hitting one off of Ed Correa of the Rangers.

Smuler check this defensive play by Mattingly:

I was surprised how big the Red Sox payroll is after they ditched all those big money guys 2-years ago. Tigers are right up there.
