I personally know a 71 year old woman who had covid. Before, she lived alone in her condo and was independent. Today after 11 months, she lives in an apartment in the Hartwell residences. She lives on the ground floor because her respiratory function is very poor. She took several dozen more pounds.

In short, when I see her I hold back so as not to cry.

Not true at all ! No one can predict how covid will affect you. I know healthy people who ended up on a ventilator in ICU. Sure they recovered but at what cost. They have a long road ahead of them to recover and they will never be the same. So no Im not interested in catching it even if i am healthy. Vaccine, masks and social distancing is the way to go even if i am a healthy individual. It is dumb to purposefully catch a disease when there is another safer alternative. And btw i've never had the flu nor taken the flu vaccine but im not taking a chance with this one due to its ease of transmission.

Pretty sure a government powerful enough to take over the entire damn vaccination process (buying the vaccines and deciding who should get them) can pass laws exempting hospitals from being required to admit the unvaccinated. I saw a patient yesterday who came in to get the whooping cough vaccine to protect her pregnancy. When I told her she should get the covid vaccine as well to minimize the risk of complications, she scoffed at me.

I told her you've been getting all these vaccines your whole life (including one literaly 15 minutes ago) and this is no different. Hearing that, it was as if she suddenly realised how idiotic her reasoning was.

The damage done by misinformation on social media is truly astounding.

Incorrect. If at work a person that is identical to me except for the fact he is 300 pounds, has high blood pressure, diabetic, etc. our health insurance costs are still exactly the same. Pre existing conditions do not determine the cost of medical insurance.

For the individual health insurance market, Cloudsurf is correct (to the extent the extra charge isn’t for a preexisting condition, as you point out). They can charge more for other factors.

But due to the magic of large purchasing pools, the guy you described receives a subsidy by having everyone else pay more.

The U.S. system is made up mostly of large purchasing pools, with Obamacare being one, also.

It works okay if there aren’t too many 300 pound diabetics in the pool, and when the government starts covering the costs of those 65 and older.

And it works if supply of medical services is sufficient to provide for everyone. So there are no hard feelings about subsidizing the fat person.

Covid has strained the supply system, so there are hard feelings toward the unvaccinated, especially if you are in an ambulance after an accident and there is no capacity (and you weren’t speeding).

He wasn't talking about the health insurance market, he specifically was discussing and comparing auto insurance to health insurance and they are two totally different things. I included pre existing medical conditions to futher prove my point as to how everyone pays the same fee. Unlike auto insurance where you can have tickets and accidents that go towards a more costly policy. That doesn't happen in healthcare. So he was not correct.

Health insurance in the states can cost individuals different amounts when they purchase it on their own, but the states then balance it out by giving you a credit based on your income. So the cost per person is essentially the same price, but if I make more money than you the state will subsidies you with more money in the form of a tax credit so in the end you pay less but only because I can afford more.

As far as what Delta (quite the company name for this) is doing, that's very interesting and I find it hard to believe that they will be able to get away with it without a huge fight from the unions along with the individual state where they land their planes. But a very good point indeed.
