You have many crowdfunding sights, some will not collect the money if you do not reach your objective. You have to check out several, but I would stick with the better known names.

What a great idea.
Maybe we can get a crowd fund going to fund Merb hobbyists
It would be to the benefit of all, it would ease the financial burden on the hobbyist and create a lot more business for our favourite SP.

I hope this is what you had in mind.

funny yet for crowdfunding you have to offer something in exchange and hobbying is not aloud. lol

I did just that thank you.
I wanted to try it and now Its official I dont believe crowd funding really works unless you invest thousaans of dollars in marketing.
good night

Sarah, crowdfunding works for ages. The most obvious example is the lottery. It is crowdfunding of few lucky winners by a bunch of losers with a government as a middleman. There are many of not so obvious examples when they take your money for nothing to benefit a few smarts. You can run a lottery among merbits, for example. For the price of say $5 you can promise several hours session without restrictions for the lucky winner. If it done openly with supervision I will participate  Any other people willing?

Actually back a couple years ago there was drawing of prizes at the parties. It was inclusive in the rate but it was a nice little bonus. I know Charmer got himself a duo with 2 of the hottest ladies of the time that way.

I think the concept would be interesting, but in the case of a board pool, the thing is, how to know this is legit and winners are not choosen. Who would be the person in charge. Even if its an SP doing it with a free session with herself, what guarentee us she won't just pick a regular she like. The only way i could see is hosting a LIVE event and putting the names in a basket showing every single one but that is not really easy to do in our context.

As for crowdfunding itself by way of kickstarter or indygogo or gofundme, here it is...

Kickstarter : Gotta have a working prototype of the product you are asking funds for. I personally participated in the SHENMUE 3 kickstarter but i did because this is litteraly my most wanted video game of all time and i had total faith in Yu Suzuki the creator. Also the game is not just "crowd funded" but also backed by a publisher, it was kinda of a way to test the market if i can say, see if the interest for the saga was still there.

Indygogo : Never used, don't need a working prototype. A bit more shady.

Gofundme : Personal funding. You have to be honest tough and not trick people, but it can be for anything. Its usually for "hope stories" like getting a sick kid to disneyland or something like that. Usually it get traction if you have a lot of friends who share it and donate themselves, then it be share by strangers and so on.

To have a personal crowdfunding work, you need snowball effect and for that, your reason why you need money must be worth it.

What happens if the product promised does not get produced. It seems to me that it would be very easy to make a promise and pull a scam.

Its a possibility you must be aware and it has happened products where cancelled. Kickstarter state that it may happen when you pledge.

For GoFundMe its different due to the personal nature of the campaigns. You can't say for instance you are raising money for your sick kid while hiring the neighbor kid. If you get exposed you will be prosucated for fraud. Because you down right lie. But on Kickstarter if you have a good presentation and a product to show, and it just fall flat cause of whatever (liscencing issues, ran out of money, mismanagement) then sadly you loose your money.

A good fraudster can promise a dream device but fail to deliver because of ( planned ) technical difficulties or the inability to fulfill the promise because of high cost. How do you check up on a guy in Bakersfield, California?

It's called funding which means there's investment risk yea.

I've gotten 3 decent products out of Kickstarter myself. I would say I have minor issues with all of them but they all satisfied the main purpose of why I decided to support each one.
