that's actually a good point. the 'honour system' does not work in this circumstance. People that respect the quarantine are more likely to have respected social distancing measures while away...

I heard in the news tonight that passengers will have to have a negative covid test 3 days before returning to canada...why not administer a test when they arrive? then another test after 4 days at the travellers expense? I would rather pay $100 dollars for a test than have to quarantine for 14 days. The value of my 'productivity' over 2 weeks is worth way more than $100...

Is it still mandatory to stay 4 days at home even if the test is negative? I would be very surprise by this.
They are probably asking for a test 3 days before to get the result in time.

Yes, but it doesn't guarantee 100% that you don't have the covid. When you take the test, your result may be negative and you may turn positive after 4-5 days.

And that's even more dangerous because you think you are negative, and in reality you have become positive.

I repeat, the 14-day quarantine is the only way to decrease the spread.

That's another topic whether is the test accurate or what is it's real value. Still that's the only way we have to determine if a person carry the virus or not.
Should the government cancel the 14-day quarantine by relying on the test, I agree with you that's not the best option but what else can they do. Close all airports and foreign travels like they did during the first wave?

The government will not cancel the 14-day quarantine. It's the safer way to do.

almost at the one week mark...i can see the light at the end of the tunnel
Congrats. We better abide to the laws to CONTROL the spread of this COVID. This is far most dangerous than any STD for now.

I was missleaded.
So there is still 14-day quarantine even if the person is negative which is a good thing as you said. The question is, if someone is positive what would happen. If they can't return back until they got a negative result who will pay for those extra days abroad?

Instead of this they should ground all international flights. The borders should be shut and should have been since January. That is how diseases get introduced. Bars and restaurants are closed but you can take a flight to a resort. Weird. Why expend so many resources to keep tabs on people?

Foreign travel never was cancelled. Asylum seekers and refugees were still entering in the thousands. Airports were never closed.

That is because our politicians on both side of the border need a vacation in a nice sun location.
These people wear themselves out telling us time and time again to be good citizens and to stay home don’t travel think of the lives you can save.
They have more than earned a couple of weeks in the sunshine so they can come back rejuvenated and ready to preach some more.

I guess you are referring to this guy? You Canadians seem to breed self entitled politicians, and one only needs to look at the above post to see where it comes from.
Obviously, "Rocket" Rob think Covid lockdown is for the "little people", like Cloud 500, you and 2fast2slow, the constituents, while he gets to play in the sandbox.

Yep because it is always a different set of rules for politicians. I always said they are all scum and the government is not our friend they got an agenda.

if every country is basically a 'red zone', what's the difference of being there as opposed to here? If you going from a 'red zone' country to a 'green zone' country i could understand the objections, but Covid is basically everywhere, and if you have not noticed, it is here too. So i would rather be in a red zone in the sun rather than in a red zone in the snow and ice.

This whole thing about travellers going down south is another bullshit story.

Ok, if the people going down there are not social distancing, they would not be social distancing here either (these are the people driving up the numbers). However, you COULD travel down south and take social distancing precautions and you would not be any more likely to catch something down there than you would here.

I don't like the idea of governments restricting our freedom to travel, even in a pandemic. It's a slippery slope. Be careful what you wish for.

Diseases are almost always introduced due to international travel. Look at history from the Black Plague to the Spanish Flu all came from China due to international travel had our incompetent crime minister grounded all flights in January we would not be paying the price. On the other hand it is not fair and very inconsistent to block someone from driving to the US but you can take a flight? All bars, retail, restaurants got to shut down but flights continue. It is weird and makes no sense. So if flights can go on I want bars to be all open as usual is my point.

NYC
just came back from a short stay just across the border in New York State and now have to quarantine for 14 days....i know i have not caught it from my trip as i came into contact with no one, so quarantine is silly for me, although I am doing it. Wondering about enforcement, anybody have experience with that?
I had two occasions over the summer where I had to travel to a state that was on NY's travel quarantine list. The time I flew back to NY there were people greeting us when we got off the plane requiring us to fill out forms about our travel history and contact information. The loophole getting out of having to give all this information is if you were in this state for less than 24 hours. So all I had to do was tell the person at the airport that I had been in the state for less than 24 hours and I was on my way. I have no problem quarantining but I do have a problem with giving out private information to anybody. I didn't want to get the bullshit calls and letters that would certainly follow. The second time was on my Harley motorcycle and there was nobody stopping me when I entered back into NY. On both occasions I did quarantine for 14 days. This may not answer your post considering that it wasn't an international trip, but maybe it's interesting to someone. With millions and millions of travelers its pretty much impossible to enforce a quarantine rule on someone because there's just no way to enforce it.

got an email from the GOC this morning:

Government of Canada / Gouvernement du Canada

Le français suit

You are receiving this email from the Government of Canada because you recently returned from travelling outside of Canada.
As someone who has recently travelled outside of Canada, here is some information on how to keep members of your household safe while you are in quarantine.
You must do this by:
  • Washing your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
  • Covering your mouth and nose with your arm when coughing or sneezing.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces within the home regularly.
  • Do not have visitors.
  • Avoiding contact with individuals with chronic conditions, compromised immune systems, and older adults.
Remember: You must continue to respect the Emergency Order to isolate.
The Government of Canada may be calling to monitor compliance with mandatory quarantine. We ask that you please answer calls from 1-888-336-7735. Note that you may also be contacted by provincial/territorial authorities throughout your 14-day quarantine. If federal and provincial/territorial guidelines differ, you should follow the most precautionary and stringent requirements.
