Actually not a good example because his record company forced Mellencamp to change the words of the song which had been written about an interracial couple. I think the original words meant to convey that Diane was a debutante who found her way into the back seat of Jack the African American's car because even in Indiana a black guy taking a white woman to a hotel back then was NOT a great idea. The message Johnny got was "tone that shit down or it will not be on your fucking album." So he played ball and made Jack a raceless football star.
