Hey everyone,

I was thinking to move to Montreal permanently. I live in the East Coast and used to come to Montreal for work and also used that opportunity to see SPs. Now that the work is ending, I was thinking of moving elsewhere and looking for a nice, calm, quiet place with decent cost of living. I know it is bad everywhere and prices are skyrocketing lol. Would not have expected this a couple of years back, but I do need some decent place to live lol. I do speak French fairly well. What are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate any help.

If you already have a lease that is a long time lease then I recommend against moving because you will pay a lot more when getting a new lease on an apartment, even Montreal has seen big increases in rents all thanks to Trudeau. If your lease is recent then by all means come. If you own a house or condo then the story is different. Montreal is not quiet at all, it is overcrowded also thanks to Trudeau unless you plan to live far in the suburbs only then you can find a quiet calm place. My two cents.

Thanks very much! I really appreciate your input. My one year lease is ending anyway so need to move. I plan to live away from the city and like you said thanks to Trudeau lol. I am a freelancer so can live in the suburbs away from the craziness and enjoy the SPs that Montreal has to offer.

I am uncertain as to the reasons behind your inclination to reside in this corrupted province; nonetheless, I am more than capable of providing assistance in this matter. To proceed, I kindly request pertinent information such as your budgetary constraints, desired square footage for the apartment, preferred locality, transportation arrangements, preference for a doorman, and whether you wish for the apartment to be furnished or unfurnished. Once you have addressed all of my queries, I will undoubtedly guide you towards suitable apartments and areas that align with your preferences.

Thank you so much, Obvio-Obvio. Truly appreciate it. My reasoning is that the East Coast is also getting worse and at least in Montreal I'd have access to SPs. And since I can work from anywhere I thought of giving Montreal a try. My preference is someplace quiet, away from the city, around $1.5 - 2k a month. A small 1 bedroom/studio apartment is fine. I don't have a preference for a doorman and I have a car. If public transportation is available then great, but if not no big deal.

No problem, my friend were all like family.Your passion and love for this hobby are truly commendable. I appreciate you highlighting your preferences. I have the ideal location in Outremont firmly in mind. I have a friend who is responsible for managing the leasing of this building. By the way, it's a pristine new establishment featuring an outdoor pool on the rooftop, a gymnasium, and indoor parking facilities. Please allow me some time to communicate with my friend and gather all the necessary details. I will get back to you by Monday. Rest assured, the place I have in mind perfectly aligns with your preferences. I just need to confirm with my friend before providing you with further information regarding its availability. Additionally, may I ask when you are planning to move in?

I moved here recently and I would say if you're looking for a calm quiet place, Montreal is definitely not the city (by Canadian standards). Everything seems overcrowded and its a really hard city to get around given construction, poorly maintained roads, and frantic drivers everywhere. Streets were not built to handle the amount of people that live here. There is a constant power struggle between cars, bycicles, pedestrians and city buses. Housing has also become very expensive for a city known for its affordable housing.

On the plus side Montreal's cultural events, restaurants and peoples attitude towards quality of life is better than most cities in North America. And of course the women aren't bad either.

There are many quieter places in Montreal. You can also look for a lease transfer for cheaper rent but your budget for a studio or 1 bedroom will get you one lol the winters are rough here though. If you don't speak French I wouldn't recommend it though. The language laws are getting worse yearly.

Are you Canadian? Do you have a visa/permanent residency?

Thanks to Trudeau? Do you understand the concept of free market? The market dictates prices. Do you expect the government to start costing everything? By the way, the rent board is administered by the Quebec government. It’s all Trudeau’s fault…… what a comment.

You obviously failed Economics 101. It is the most basic law, the law of supply and demand and no it is not a free market when the federal government is giving away money to refugees and OAS to the retired parents of recent immigrants, money to have kids. Trudeau in 2022 brought in 1.5 million people. it takes time to construct new houses and apartments. This is the biggest unnatural population increase since the 1950s. When demand is increased the prices go up. It does not take a genius to figure this one out. There is a housing crisis in all the big cities of Canada. This is a Federal caused problem so yes all thanks to Trudeau. With 8 years of Trudeau rents have doubled, mortgages have doubled. I suggest you read on up how economics work before lecturing me.

Legault changed the game with that, he passed a bill whereby making it much easier for landlords to decline lease transfers. Most likely it will not work. Agreed for the strict language laws.

Montreal actually lost population recently. People are moving to the suburbs. But don't let that in the way of a good anti-Trudeau rant I guess.

i have lived in Montreal most of my life, and have travelled to many other cities in North America. I am financially capable to live in most places (obvioulsy not places like Manhattan), but I would not live anywhere else (Toronto would be my second choice).

I live in the heart of the city and take my bike everywhere, I dont have to fight traffic. I have access to beautiful affordable sps anytime I want. Hard to beat that.

Except Westmount, all the areas you listed are boroughs of the city and not suburbs. Montréal isn't just downtown lol.

Suburbs = Laval, Brossard, Longueil etc.
