Military transport planes fly much much lower, so....
MH17 waseither shot down on purpose, exacly what the purpose was is not clear at this point, or
it was shot down in error which is more likely.
The missile system used to down the airlines is extremely sophisticated and requires weeks of training which the pro-russian rebels did not have
MH17 also transmitted the correct codes indicating it was a civilian airplane, but the team with the missile launches didn't understand that
And finally, an intercepted conversation between rebel "command" and a russion major made it pretty clear that this plane was shot down in error.
But I had the same question - why would any airline fly over that area with this conflict going on?
Malaysian Airlines was not the only airline that took the route across that region, they and the people on board were just the unlucky ones.
BTW - On a flight from Amsterdam to the Far East, the extra fuel used to bypass the conflict zone has to be trivial considering the total distance.
