To some of these 2nd and 3rd world countries passenger safety is not a top priority. Responsible countries such as the United State, Canada, and Europe all stopped flying over this area soon after the conflict began. Malaysia airlines in my opinion continued to take the direct route as a cost saving measure just hoping something like this would not happen.

C'mon Jeff, you know gas is expensive. I'm sure you take shortcuts to save on gas.

Back in 2004 Nelson DeMille's book Night Fall, which was a novel based on the TWA Flight 800, was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for months:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Fall_(novel)

The book pursues a theory that the plane was shot down by a surface to air missile. For those who have read DeMille they probably know he has lived most of his life on Long Island, as has Billy Joel.

I actually really enjoyed the book and I believe it is in my library at home along with about 10 or so other DeMille books.

You are absolutely right! What the hell is this? Flying commercial flights over the war zone with active antiaircraft systems that downed at least 15 aircraft for the last 2 months just to save a few dollars on fuel? Sooner or later this was going to happen… Ukraine actually closed this part of its aerospace to own commercial flights on June 6 so rebels naturally assumed it was military transport plane…

Hmmm............
The airspace where MH17 flew was actually open - it was only closed up to 32000ft
http://www.cnbc.com/id/101845738#.

Military transport planes fly much much lower, so....
MH17 waseither shot down on purpose, exacly what the purpose was is not clear at this point, or
it was shot down in error which is more likely.

The missile system used to down the airlines is extremely sophisticated and requires weeks of training which the pro-russian rebels did not have
MH17 also transmitted the correct codes indicating it was a civilian airplane, but the team with the missile launches didn't understand that
And finally, an intercepted conversation between rebel "command" and a russion major made it pretty clear that this plane was shot down in error.

But I had the same question - why would any airline fly over that area with this conflict going on?
Malaysian Airlines was not the only airline that took the route across that region, they and the people on board were just the unlucky ones.

BTW - On a flight from Amsterdam to the Far East, the extra fuel used to bypass the conflict zone has to be trivial considering the total distance.

Yea right…. It is not safe up to 32000 feet but 33000 is OK, absolutely safe… I saw one dude from some airline on TV saying that they are flying over Afghanistan all the time when the war was going on. There is small difference there, Afghani Taliban are mostly illiterate people with no access to modern weaponry. My understanding is that on the side of rebels there are plenty of people retired from the Soviet and Russian military. They know how to operate this shit even in the drunken state… In case of the full flagged civil war in Russia we can expect some rogue bands with nuclear weapons. How do you like to have a boomer with about 100 warheads at the US shores? They can wipe out 20 mln at will. All this codes and safeguards are only good when under the government control. They can be bypassed by some smarts and be sure Russians are very smart at evil deeds…

They were not the only ones, but as JJ mentioned earlier, the responsible nations suspended the flights over Ukraine. The FAA suspended all flights originating in the USA from overflying that zone and all airlines falling under the FAA were required to obey that restriction. This was well before this incident occurred.

There is no doubt that a mistake occurred but the question is whether it was foreseeable that this could happen. Of course it was. Igor Strelkov twittered a warning to commercial airlines.

This was a gamble that Malaysian Airlines took, and they lost.

You need to get your facts straight as well:
Earlier this year the Federal Aviation Administration banned American air carriers from flying over part of the disputed area between Russia and Ukraine over safety concerns, but the area where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed on Thursday was not included in this restricted airspace.

My understanding is that 200 of the bodies were loaded into a refrigerated truck by "drunken" rebels based on what I heard on the news yesterday.

I would not be able to perform this grim task for hours without some kind of medication. These are not trained emergency response people and alcohol is what they have at hand. And surprise, people drink at war a lot, read WWII stories, a lot of drinking even among disciplined German troops…There is real war going on in this place and they are probably do this task with their comrades every day.

Due to the vastness and depth of the ocean I have no doubt that a plane can vanish into it without a trace. I suspect no foul play. What would be the motive to make it disappear?

executive decision.steven segal and kurt russell. Would the gouverment really tell you why a plane would vanish if that was to happen and had no choice but to destroy it

I remember seeing this movie at the movie theatre soon after it came out. I was a big Steven Segal fan back then and the movie was billed as a Steven Segal/Kurt Russell movie. Kurt Russell remains one of my favorite movie actors. Among my favorite movies ever are 'The Thing', 'Escape from New York' and 'Tombstone', all movies Russell starred in. I also loved 'Poseidon', which was the remake of the great movie 'The Poseidon Adventure'.

But imagine my shock when Steven Segal's character met an unexpected death within the first 15 minutes of the movie!!!!! I kind of felt bamboozled by the movie's producers into thinking i was going to see a Steven Segal movie when nothing could be further from the truth!

Still it was a very good movie and i've seen it many times. I love plane movies! I also loved all the Airport movies (especially the first one) and the Wesley Snipes movie "Passenger 57", which was also very good.

I heard some parts of the ocean are deeper than mount everest height... No human can venture that deep... too much pressure.
