What exactly was Don Cherry’s remarks based on? That’s what isn’t clear to me. I thought he was known for his controversial comments and that’s why Sportsnet hired and continued to employ him.

^^^^^ Up 3 to Robert.

There seems to be some confusion to what he said and I only find texts not videos. I find the quote I posted but the link you shared added immigrants to the fold.
Anyone found a video to see if he said immigrants, makes no difference to be as I am an immigrant and was not offended.
Just courious

What EB said . Why now?!?
Most liked him and some loathed him ,,, perfectly understandable because he was a polarizing tv celebrity after all
Myself I identify as an immigrant and although I pretty much remember his outspoken views I never took offence personally. I found the old geezer entertaining and comical . It’s like an end of an era but fir sure Canadian hockey and Don Cherry will always be linked
In our politically correct world it’s remarkable that he lasted that long really ,,, but it’s snowing outside and thst always brings out the snowflakes

...... what he said last Saturday n'avait rien de très répréhensible...he said immigrants who share our values and enjoy our way of living should not hesitate to spend few bucks to buy a coqueliquot remembering our vets.....FOR ME he was right on this and nothing that offensive....BUT of course not politicly correct..lol.....
many times he said worst than that on Corner's Coach....souvent critiqué mais jamais blâmé....IMHO il paye la note pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre....my 2 cents.

^^^^^ But he never said immigrants. Also to note, if he had a rant about anything else the PC group would not have complained, he could have called the Europeans hockey players pussies and he would still have a job.

Exactly gaby he was known to speak his mind and he has said a lot worse in the past.
Maybe he could of worded things differently but I think that this time around he was right and didn’t say anything that bad . But the liberal media is too sensitive.
Remembrance Day is a day to pay homage and respect to the older generations that fought for us all to have this way of life, our liberty, “ liberty of speech “ as well. Both my grandfathers fought in the wars and sadly I think people these days do not appreciate or show the proper respect for what tge older generations did and sacrificed and went through fir all of us . Perhaps he should have said everybody because that’s the truth . And I think he said “ you people “ which I think we all know what that means . Anyways this is a sports thread and I don’t want to pollute it .

McDavid gets his 400th point, the 8th person to get it before their 23 birthday.

A lot of you guys are focused on this last moment of Don Cherry's career but you are far too young to remember his accomplishments or even his most notorious moments as NHL Coach.

He led the Bruins to the finals against the Habs in 1977 and 1978 where they lost in 6 games both years. In 1978, Cherry ordered his players to high stick and hit Guy Lafleur whenever they could and at the end of that series LafLeur's face had to be wrapped in bandages.

LafLeur would have the last laugh in the 1979 Semifinals vs. Montreal. The Bruins were up by 1 goal with 3 minutes to go in game 7, and had that lead held up, the Bruins very likely would have beaten the NY Rangers in the finals. However, the Bruins were called for too many men on the ice with 3 minutes to go, and the Habs went on the power play. Next came this historical NHL moment, as Jacques Lemaire (who would later coach the NJ Devils to the 1995 Stanley Cup with a famous "neutral zone trap") deftly assisted on Lafleur's game tying goal:

After that stunning game 7 defeat, Cherry would be unceremoniously fired after a great 3 year run as Bruins head coach which included a then record 11 20 goal scorers on the 1978 team.

Big game for the Leafs tonight against the league's hottest team the NY Islanders. The Leafs will be without star player Mitch Marner for at least a month due to a sprained ankle he suffered against the Flyers the other night. But Zack Hyman will be making his season debut tonight after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL.

Leafs have had a tough schedule to deal with so far this season and it'll only get tougher for the next month or two.

Michael Hutchison cleared waivers yesterday and will likely be sent down to the minors. They brought up their Marlies #1 goalie to replace Hutchison. Kazimir something.

Go Leafs Go!

Just a tough night for NY Rangers in TB tonight as Georgiev gave up 4 goals on his first 9 shots faced and had to be relieved of his goaltending duties. As a goalie it has to suck when you are pulled out of a game early and after giving up a bunch of goals. I am sure Georgiev feels crappy but hopefully there will be better days ahead.

Was worried last night when Smith let in the first shot. Have not been able to praise the team the past decade but this could be the the year they get into the playoffs. They do have the best 1 - 2 punch in the NHL, the goaltending has improved and the defense also. Hope it lasts.

Impressive road wins last night by Montreal, over Washington, and Boston, over Toronto. Both the Habs and Bruins are looking good, especially on offense. Meanwhile Toronto does not look so good. Their development as a team seems to have stagnated. To me they have been more disappointing than TB so far. Toronto is only ahead of TB in the standings because they have 5 games in hand. TB has only played 16 games and their record is deceptively good. But right now Boston and Montreal rule the division and one can envision a Habs-Bruins Eastern Conference fnal, bringing back memories of the good old days.

Goalie Stats

Took a look at the goalie stats and what is interesting is that of the 50 qualifying goalies based on save % (the most meaningful stat, in my eyes), Boston, Edmonton and Dallas are the only teams which have both goalies in the top 15, which tells me that they have the best goalie coaches:

http://www.espn.com/nhl/statistics/player/_/stat/goaltending/sort/savePct

Another interesting thing is that while the people posting on this thread about the Oilers have fixated on McDavid and Draisatl, the real reason why Edmonton is where it is right now is goalie Koskinen, who is 6th in the NHL in save % at this time. Mike Smith is also in the top 15.

I also note that Vasilevskiiy of TB is languishing at 38th among qualifying goalies which suggests he is not giving starting-calibre goaltending services to TB at this time. However, the 2 worst starting goalies in the NHL have been Martin Jones of SJ at #45 and Sergei Bobrovsky of Florida, at a moose ball sucking #48.
