Need advice on owning a 2nd cell phone

So, I recently switched phones & picked up the new Google Nexus, and maintained my same cell number. I still kept my old cell, but I obviously cannot use the old one anymore, because my provider unregistered the SIM card.

I have never used 2 cell phones simultaneously.

I was thinking that it's finally time to have one phone for regular usage (friends, family), and another one strictly for my hobby.

I will use my new Nexus for my non-hobby related stuff, and would like to use my old phone, which is still in very good condition, as my "Walt White" phone… lol

How do I do it and keep costs to a bare minimum? I really only need it for texting and calling; no internet required.
I would obviously need a new phone number….but I really have NO CLUE on how to do it.

I want to get as much 411 as possible before calling my provider. Should I go with the same provider or try a new one, like Videotron…who has been trying to convince me to do a "package" with them, where I would have my cable, my internet, my home line and a cell line, altogether, for a good price...

A couple thoughts come to mind. First, tying it to your other services with videotron could cause you problems in terms of someone seeing your bill and wondering why you have a cell with 2 companies. Same would apply to any where you get a bill though I guess.

Best bet, go with a "pay as you go" service. Minutes do expire but the length that they last varies based on how much you purchase at once, so just figure out what's best for you in terms of usage/expiry.

Also your old phone, if you got it through your current provider, you're probably stuck with a locked phone (meaning it won't work on other carriers' networks). You can pay to have it unlocked, but you're probably best just going with whatever pay as you go service is offered by the same provider. Beyond keeping costs down, the best part is that there are no bills or mail sent to you so no drama.

Rudolph,

Thx for your quick reply.

Yes, my old phone and new phone are with the same provider. So, you're probably correct in that my old phone is probably locked.

Welcome to the dark side and having 2 phones. Try this, look into adding a line to your current plan or changing your current plan to a family plan and limit the use of the new phone. The family plan is the way I do it.

No worries. Whichever provider you're with you can just go to their site, they all publish their pay as you go rates. They'll probably charge you a small fee to activate your own device rather than buying a new one for the new line but shouldn't be a huge amount.

In another thread somewhere on here Lily was asking about something similar. Apparently there are apps for smartphones where you can get a second phone number and use it just for this stuff. I'm not familiar so I can't speak too much about it but I'm sure a search here could yield something or some googling.

Try this, the Burner App. http://burnerapp.com

As Rudolph said, you can pay to have a secondary number on your smartphone and don't need to have the physical second phone. Then you won't have "Skylar" finding your Walter White phone.

No need for 2 phones I believe, I'm using the Fongo app found on the Google store. It's there when I. Need it. Calls are free and u can pay a membership for txt for a month or more. Like a previous post, the Burner app is good too but I like the free calling with Fongo.

Being techy saves lost of money for hobbyist like us, my friend. Lol

I have 2 cellphones, one is my iPhone, and the other is a AT&T Go Phone, which I use strictly for all hobby related activities. The Go Phone is pay as you go, i.e., you put money in it and it is good for 90 days, and if you put a little in it will replenish the funds for another 90 days if you do not use your phone for 90 days. It can be used in USA or Canada at the same rates for texting, but the call rate is cheaper in the USA (.10/minute) than in Canada (.39/minute).

It cost me all of $15. No SIM card is necessary, you just put money on the phone and you are off to the races.

I didn't read all the posts but if an SP needs to see your number and you don't want to give them your regular number then the online methods won't really work. If you want to get your phone to work, assuming that it's locked to the provider you had it on before, you just go there and they'll sell you another sim card with either a new plan or whatever cheap options they have.

Edit: I guess I'm wrong.

Been using FONGO on my phone with 2 different emails so 2 different local numbers for over 2 years now and it works like a charm. No need for a 2nd phone. And its completely free to make local calls. Once you have FONGO set up, all you do is be logged in and you can send and receive calls with your new appointed number. When you dont want to use it, just log off. Its really a lot more practical than a 2nd phone. If you want to use the app to send text messages, there's a small fee though. I think 1.99$ a month.

I would say that the trick is good but you may not receive a response. Most agencies require a valid phone number to make an appointment. That's why we do not take calls from google phone, skype or unknown numbers, we simply don't hang up. For textPlus textnow and others, the numbers used are rarely new and could already be banned. If you want a cheap solution, get a prepaid phone and pay 20$ every 3 months.

i tried buying a prepaid phone at best buy, but you have to set it up on line and give your personal info, so it was a no go. Is there a way to get a pre-paid phone that is not tied to a personal identification?

Exactly what I said Jimmy. These guys think that escort agencies do not have things all figured out like they do. We have a bunch of posts in this thread by people who don't get that the real world is not what they are watching on the TV. A lot of advice to spend some money on an app that will not help them do anything but feel like they are Daniel Craig wannbes.

2Fast2Slow, you can attach made up names to prepaid phones. Eliot Spitzer did it but you can't?????????????? Don't go to Best Buy. Go to the store in the Eaton Centre if you are Canadian. My buddy bought his there, actually had me cracking up as he gave them his fake name and address. He uses the same fake name for all hobbyist adventures.

@Wildtimes. Not completely true Jimmy, apps do get you a valid local number from your preferred province. Trust themonk8, I've been doing this for 2 yrs already.
Out of curiosity, why does it matter if the client doesn't necessarily want to share his permanent phone number? It's the same as buy a new phone with a new number once in a while. Just want to know the rationale behind it, thx

For us, its a question of security. If I type the phone number in google and it links to an app like textnow, I automatically decline the booking. If something happen, I want to be sure I know where to call and that there is a traceability to someone. Google phone number is always the same for everybody, skype too. Apps like textnow use a bunch of local phone number, which you can release every day and get a new one from the bank of numbers.. no traceability. I you buy a real phone and a number 5 times in a week and release them.. you are traceable, usually. I personally think that when someone call with one of these non-traceable numbers or with an unknown number, the risk of a bad call is 10 times higher then we are not wasting our time.

Not only for security but also for customer service, we must be able to reach to advise if something happens and we have to cancel the appointment or we're late.

I finally got a "bat phone/go phone" to dedicate to the hobby last year. I have a neighbor that works out of town. I recently found out that his wife had a premonition and conducted a search of his car. She found his Go Phone and found a history of several love texts and calls placed to the same number. He was busted red handed.

If there is a significant other a hobby phone could lead to significant problems. for that reason, I clear my numbers and texts after every trip. I also keep it locked up somewhere. I used to keep it in my office or in my safe but I would find myself leaving it there and only remember the darn thing after I was at the airport on my way through security. Now I have my hobby phone stored in a locked compartment in my car. There it sits charged, waiting for my next hobby trip. If I enter the airport without it I can now just go back to my car to grab my phone.

I feel so much better now that I rarely see hobby numbers on my Verizon bill that I submit on my expense accounts anymore. This is just one less way to get outed and fired by my PC company. To book girls I make use of the PM function, e-mail, the hotel phone, and my hobby phone. I recommend it!

I just thought I would add this tidbit just in case there is someone else in your life besides SPs.
