In the USA a "plea" is a formal "declaration" to the Court on how the defendant answers to the charges. The defendant must speak it- not his or her attorney. They must "declare" they are guilty or not guilty. I should note that there may be preliminary hearings before an arraignment occurs where such a plea is entered.
Orientation declare is pretty much like you mentioned. Entering a plea and deciding what type of trial they will go towards (Orientation) Mediation, trial, and fixing a date.

I brought up Massachusetts as an outlier a few days ago. It’s a state notorious for hating normal, heterosexual men and the corrupt media played a role in exposing client names. That’s misguided. Many agencies in NYC and NNJ have been operating for years, without incident. Oftentimes those that got busted did something stupid.
