Joe, the Yankees are on target to win 88 games if they do the same as before the All Star break as they have played 88 games of the 162 game season.

Good news for the Yankees is they have 74 games left and 40 are at home and 34 are away. The Yankees are 25-16 at home and 23-24 away. That should boost their chances of winning 90 games or more.

The Red Sox are on target to a 76-86 record. The Red Sox are not a bad team. They made a few bad acquisitions like Sandoval and Porcello. Brock Holt who is playing great baseball for the Red Sox would have been a better choice for 3rd base than Sandoval. The Red Sox also have dead weight at first with Napoli. But if you look at their rookies like Betts, Bogaerts and Holt, they have interesting foundation. You wonder if Cheerington went shopping too fast too soon?

Anyhow, another interesting race is the NL Central between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the St. Louis Cardinals, which could be the 2 best teams in baseball with KC Royals being a close third.

The Pirates have the former Yankees Catchers Francisco Cervelli and Chris Stewart. Cervelli is batting .294 and Stewart .291. They share the catching duties with Cervelli being 1st string. Now you ask, are the Yankees in better shape with Brian McCann. Probably. McCann has more experience with handling pitchers and has more HR and RBI production, but I bet it was tough for Girardi to give Cervelli up. Cervelli is the same tough catcher as Girardi was.

Also, AJ Burnett has been pitching the lights out in Pittsburgh. He is 7-3 with an ERA of 2.11. The Pirates also have their home grown guys like All Stars Pitcher Gerald Cole and Center fielder Andrew McCutchen. The Pirates (.598 winning percentage) were 9 games back of the blazing hot St. Louis Cardinals (.638 winning percentage) and have a chance of being 3 1/2 games behind the Cardinals at the All Star break. It should be a hot race for the NL Central. The Cubs are trailing along 8 1/2 games at a respectable .545. It is very possible that both 2nd and 3rd place teams in the NL Central will play for the Wild Card.

I agree, they are not a bad team they are a terrible team, the question is do they fire Cherington and Farrell at the same time or do they fire Farrell soon and Cherington later, it will be interesting to see what this team looks like come September.

O-M-G. I had to frame this honesty. But you have to know your pals are upset with it. It will go right up Joe.t's #&@....and correcting the poor boy's terrible math...OOOPS!

All true too. Also E Rodriguez is showing some real solid steadiness when he keeps a watch on protecting his pitches and using his full range of pitches effectively. He got killed when he tipped pitches and took one pitch or another out of his repertoire that day. The Sox also have some very promising pitching in their farm system who will get a taste of the MLB with Buchholz out temporarily.

Victorino and Gomes have been way under par. The team is said to be looking for any opportunity to move them, but their poor performances have made that impossible so far, especially in Victorino's case and his lingering injury situation.

As I've said many times I thought Cherrington should have been far more patient. The fans can handle a young struggling team that needs time to grow, but have a hard time accepting a team studded with grossly overpaid quickie pseudo solutions who have, to put it simply, played badly. Hanley Ramirez could have been a good DH replacement for Ortiz at the right time, but his attitude is very questionable and his salary is freaking ridiculous.

I agree, they are not a bad team they are a terrible team,...

ROFLMAO  That's my little guy. l

No, it was an honest mistake Merlot. We all make them.

This is far more analysis and the number of brain cells I would want to give to any Red Sox team.

The bottom line, so far, the Yankees have been the better team of the 2.

The Yankees have been getting good run production more often than not and fair to good pitching. They are not the Mets where they have a staring rotation that rivals 1969 but they hardly score runs. The Red Sox have had pretty bad pitching except for a couple of bright spots like this rookie that you mention, but he has not been consistent and Buchholz has not been very consistent but has had some good games.

My bet is the Yankees make it into the playoffs and the Red Sox do not.

ROFLMAO  That's my little guy. l

The Legend know as MISTER Joe.t is rarely wrong on picking how bad the rouge hosers will suck, in fact he has made me almost as much Cha-Ching on them as he has with his NFL picks throughout the years and that is alot of coinage, BOYZZZZZ

Nice to see Rob Refsnyder get his first two Major League Hits today, they could not have come against a better team to do it against either. I hope the Yanks are not auditioning him or any other young guys as trade bait before the deadline. Leave the future along MISTER Cashman, Please....

I can't wait for Joe the Greek's predictions come this NFL season. I have a feeling that he won't be putting too much money on the Patriots during the season.

Of course he's right all the time that's why everyone calls him "The Curse of Joe.t" and either runs away from his predictions or feels like they've died whenever Joe ruins a bet with his curse, then his pals rush in to humor the little guy. He doesn't want to know anything about the teams he just guarantees every Boston team will finish at the bottom every year. Since I've been a fan as a little kid they've finished last 3 times in 45 years (1992, 2012, 2014) making his prediction batting average 0.067. He's predicted the Patriots last every year since 2000 and gee, only 6 Super Bowls and 4 Championships. Don't get me wrong, I luv the guy. He's too bad to dislike, like a broken puppy.

Joe, the Yankees are on target to win 88 games if they do the same as before the All Star break as they have played 88 games of the 162 game season.

Right. The Yankees have won 54.5% of their games putting them on an 88 game pace. It's a poor showing in such a weak division. The Red Sox are stuck with too many poor player contract burdens with guys who are under-performing badly, The Orioles and Ray can't find any consistency, and despite a very impressive hot streak the Jays are right in line with old habits of slow starts, big gains and eventual mediocrity. If the 1st place team can only win 88 games in that division, when it would be lucky to get a Wild Card berth in others, well, the playoffs look more for the Yankees like a team that benefited from a poor division having to face up to the big boys.

My bet is the Yankees make it into the playoffs and the Red Sox do not.

So you don't think the Sox will win the World Series this year? "I'm shocked, shocked I say". I was talking about how much they absolutely sucked in April and the only general improvement I've seen is they have been at least able to make a battle of the games since the middle of May. With Buchholz out just as he was turning in a string of phenomenal performances for about 5 to 6 weeks it now look tough to get to 3rd or 4th in the division.

Big boys? Can you tell me what team the Big Boys play for, Merlot? Where are these strong divisions? There is 1 team in the American League with a record better than .600 and 2 teams in the NL (both in the same division) better than .600. Is this another case of Merlot putting his foot in his mouth not knowing what he is talking about?

AL East
NY Yankees: 48 wins .545
Tampa Bay Rays: 46 wins .505

AL Central
KC Royals: 52 wins .605
Minnesota Twins: 49 wins .551

AL West
LA Angels: 48 wins .545
Houston Astros: 49 wins .538

NL East
Washington Nationals: 48 wins .552
New York Mets: 47 wins .528

NL Central
St. Louis Cardinals: 56 wins .629
Pittsburgh Pirates: 53 wins .602

NL West
LA Dodgers: 51 wins .567
SF Giants: 46 wins .517

And about Joet. He knows a lot more about baseball and football than you, Merlot.

Great post Double D!

It is plain as day to real baseball fans as to how much competitive balance there is this season in most every division. The ONLY reason the AL East is considered one of the weakest is because of the current bottom feeder who has been stinking up the basement all season.

And add Hockey to that list, Joe has come a long way since he started following hockey the last 2 years. The guy learns quickly and surpassed the other in no time, although it wasn't hard

Very happy for you mon ami. Usually i have nothing good to say about the crosstown rival Mets but you are a good guy and deserve something positive about the team from queens. You should post that video that you were showing to everyone at one of the many other smaller gt's we attended on VIP-2 weekend. I believe that was saturday night at Pat's.
Congrats to my Mets for a 47-42 first half record

Hot headed David Ortiz is at it again

David Ortiz on Sunday's absence: 'Do they know I had a 104 fever?'

Gordon Edes, ESPN Staff Writer

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- David Ortiz acted surprised to hear that his absence from Sunday's final game before the All-Star break, an 8-6 loss to the New York Yankees, had been the subject of some controversy among the chattering classes.

Ortiz was sent home before Sunday’s game with what manager John Farrell called an upper respiratory infection. But on radio talk shows and social media, some questioned whether Ortiz should have played through the condition, with others suggesting that he had balked at playing first base when Farrell had asked him to do. Farrell insisted that was not on the table, given Ortiz’s condition.

"I don’t care," Ortiz said when told of the hoohah. "I was sick. There was nothing I could do about it. When you're sick, you're sick. What can you do about it?

"Do they judge you when you’re sick?" he said to a reporter. "What the f- is wrong with these people? Do you think I want to miss a game against the Yankees? I always want to kick the m--- Yankees' ass. I was sick. What could I do? My God.

"Do they know I had a 104 fever that night? They don't know that, right?"

Honest Fans,

Pedro Martinez opts for Red Sox logo

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12211099/pedro-martinez-rep-boston-red-sox-hall-fame-plaque

COOPERSTOWN, N.Y. -- Pedro Martinez's Hall of Fame plaque will have the cap of the Boston Red Sox, while John Smoltz's will have the Atlanta Braves.

"I cannot be any prouder to take Red Sox Nation to the Hall of Fame with the logo on my plaque," Martinez said in a statement. "I am extremely proud to represent Boston and all of New England with my Hall of Fame career. I'm grateful to all of the teams for which I played, and especially fans, for making this amazing honor come true."

The Hall of Fame, which made the announcement Thursday, had already said last week that Randy Johnson's cap will feature the logo of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Smoltz was the only player on all of Atlanta's record-setting 14 consecutive playoff teams from 1991-04.

Craig Biggio, the other player to be inducted on July 26, did not present an issue: He spent his entire 20-year major league career with the Houston Astros.

"The Museum staff works with each inductee by suggesting an appropriate logo option, or no logo at all," Hall president Jeff Idelson said in a statement. "For those whose most compelling contributions clearly took place with one team, a logo makes sense. For those whose careers were built significantly among multiple teams, not having a team logo is equally acceptable."

Greg Maddux and Tony La Russa both entered the Hall of Fame last summer with no logos on their plaques after enjoying major success with multiple teams during their careers.

The Class of 2015 will be formally inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

Cheers,

Merlot
