The All Star Game is perfect for Phil Kessel.

Why, you ask?

Simple: In an All Star Game, it doesn't matter if a player is a poor teammate, selfish, lazy, unmotivated, uncoachable, a floater, a prima donna, a poor communicator, a boring interview, one dimensional, totally uninterested in defense or backchecking, only concerned about his individual stats, and a career minus player - as long as he can skate and shoot...and, to be fair, Phil can skate and shoot.

Sour grapes, Mister Cairo?

Nothing to be sour about, especially with all the dirty laundry that's come out of leafland in the wake of Randy's firing. I have to give full credit to the Leafs for 48 years of incredible laughter:thumb:

Special thanks to Mr. Burke and Mr. Nonis for their great contributions to the world of comedy with the longterm signings of characters like Phaneuf, Kessel, and Clarkson. Add in fiascos like the mishandling of Grabovski, McArthur, Bolland, Orr (Colton, DEFINITELY not Bobby!) and so many others, and you realize that Jerry Seinfeld is not the only great comedian on the planet.

And I was very sincere in stating that the All Star Game is perfect for Mr. Kessel - it's a far, FAR better place for him than regular season games in the NHL or playoff games (not that playoff games are EVER a factor for the Leafs, who are always super anxious to be the first ones on the GOLF COURSE when the playoffs start).

And yet even in the All Star Game - where so many factors are irrelevant - we can all remember how Kessel was selected LAST by his fellow players a couple of years ago. Poor Phil.

Why does anyone even care about the All-Star Game? It's a meaningless game in the middle of the season. Of course, Phil Kessel and Tyler Seguin would be perfect for this game! Might as well add Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton too, it's not like they'll do anything come playoff time anyways.

For everyone else, it's a much needed break in the middle of a grinding season. I'd rather have my team rest and avoid potential injury, than have the honor of participating.

The all-star game is there to market the game, promote its best players, and of course, money.

I agree that like most all-star games, it's pretty much a useless game that doesn't really reflect what the game is all about. No different than the Pro Bowl and the NBA all-star game. As for MLB's all-star game, i feel different about it and i'd rate it as the best out there.

But the festivities surrounding the event are great. I made a mistake of not being in Mtl a few years ago when it was hosting the all-star game and i won't let it happen again if it returns there or is hosted by Toronto. It's a great party!

I also agree that it's a much deserved break in the middle of the season and the less players from my favorite going, the better. I feel the same way about the Olympics, by the way. The lesser, the better.

WOW!

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2329618-zdeno-chara-leveled-cedric-paquette-with-a-single-punch

I don't know much about this but some of the Lightning were sure playing punks, one paid a heavy price. At 0:42 the replay shows Paquette imitating a pile of bricks falling to the ground and looking so pitiable. Chara looks like he barely tried to hit him. I can't see how Paquette missed a simple fact of life...don't go after Zee. Then at 2:22 some nobody instigator goes after Krejci with no cause it seems.

BTW: the Leafs would be out of the playoffs according to current standings. How many years and thousands of times do the fans have to hear that before anything really changes for the better??? But at least they can boast about Kessel scoring...what else. ;)

In the 4 post-Carlyle games so far the Leafs are 1-3-0 with 2 of a possible 8 points.

They haven't managed a single goal in their last 2 games.

Only one team in the League (Devils) has played more games so far with 45. Leafs and quite a few others have played 44. Many teams have played less.

TO is currently 6th out of 8 teams in the Atlantic Division, 10th out of 16 in the Eastern Conference, and 19th out of 30 in the League.

Their regular (although not so regular lately) top line is a combined minus 22 on the season (Kessel minus 8, JVR minus 9, Kessel's roommate Bozak minus 5).

In other words, same old same old in Leaf Nation.

Only difference this year? Apparently Koolaid sales are WAY down. (Mind you, lots of Leaf jerseys have been sold - for proof, just check the ice surface any time the Leafs play.)

As always, thanks for the laughs, Leafs:thumb:

I keep hearing that the Leafs are playing better defensively is this true? They are on a tough road trip. I think some changes are coming at the trade deadline. They the Leafs will be sellers.

The Habs won again last night, I believe it was their sixth road win in a row. Soon we will be calling them the road warriors. Anyway it's two more points in the bank and another step closer to making the playoffs.

Just to brighten up things, here a few stats concerning the leafs:

Boston holds the 8th spot in the standing and in order for the leafs to take that spot, they have to go

25-13 the rest of the season in order to make it. Impossible is the reality.

Sports Club Stats have the Montreal Canadiens at a 97% chance to make the playoffs.

Detroit Red Wings have a 92% chance, while the Boston Bruins have a 55% chance of making it to the playoffs at this

time in the schedule.

The leafs have a 21% chance.

We shouldn't judge the Leafs by the standards of the other 29 teams. Let's concentrate on the positives for this uniquely accomplished team.
1) They have again blocked the installation of an NHL team in Ontario, so they have a monopoly for the next best thing in Canada's most populous province.
2) They have a 79% chance of getting the most practice time and the best tee times so they can dominate at the NHL golf tournament.
3) A few more losing streaks and they can once again claim their rightful place in the top 5 of the draft lottery.
4) They are establishing a unique tradition. Which other team has fans tossing jerseys for which they paid $100+ on the ice? They can help clothe a fair number of poor people with them.
5) They have the Bearded Lady (Kessel), Captain Pylon and Clark locked up to long term contracts so they will continue to provide amusement for years to come.
6) They only need another couple of years to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Already, few of us are old enough to have seen them win the Stanley Cup. Another couple of decades and those few will be as remarkable as World War I vets are now.
7) They are already the team with the fewest playoff appearances this century.
8) Due to last two points, they are earning their place in the merb thread of sports records which are unlikely to be exceeded.

Well, well, well: With a 3-1 loss against the Sharks, the Team That Burke and Nonis Built should adopt a new motto: "Randy Carlyle, Can't Win WITH Him, Can't Win WITHOUT Him".

Since firing Randy, the hopeless and pathetic Leafs have won exactly ONE out of FIVE games, picking up a mere 2 out of 10 possible points. They are now 6th out of 8 in the Atlantic Division, but 7th place Ottawa is only 3 points behind and has 2 games in hand, so the Leaf ship can easily sink even further.

In their latest wretched performance the Leafs were outshot 42 to 25 and outscored 3 to 1 ONLY thanks to James Reimer's very solid .951 save percentage - but Leaf fans (if any remain at this point?) will probably still use him as their scapegoat as they love to do.

The Leafs have scored a total of ONE goal in their last THREE games combined.

And how did Toronto's heroes, its BIG guns, its long-term expensive CORE players do? Glad you asked. Here are their results in this latest loss:

Kessel: minus 2
JVR: minus 2
Kessel's roommate, Bozak: minus 2
"Captain" Dion: minus 1
Clarkson: minus 1

A great future for Leaf fans, with this remarkable group of untradeable core players signed to LONGTERM costly contracts.

"Thank you Mr. Burke."

"Thank you Mr. Nonis."

Leaf Notes

1) As they have been shutout 3 times in the last week, they are well on the way to correcting their imbalance of being much better offensively than defensively. I guess that their new coach told them to cut down on goals scored, but forgot to specify that he meant by the opposition.
2) Did you know that Calgary once went more than 3 seasons without being shutout a single time? I wonder what the record is for fewest goals scored in a 4 game span.
3) They have already won a game and January is barely half over.
4) There is almost half a season left, so they will indubitably provide lots more entertainment.

All true Anon Vlad.

The greatest comedy act in the history of the NHL has won only 3 of their last 15 games. When Randy Carlyle was fired, the Leafs had won 2 of their last 9, and since Randy's left they've won 1 out of 6...which is statistically even worse!

In their 4 game road trip they picked up ZERO of a possible 8 points at 0 and 4 - might as well have stayed home and defaulted. At least that way Phil and Tyler could have sat on the couch together and watched a lot of good TV.

The Leafs were outscored 12-1 in those 4 losses. They were shut out in games 1, 2 and 4, but - to their credit - in game 3 they EXPLODED with one whole goal:thumb:

So far on the season, the big # 1 line (ha ha ha ha ha) is a combined MINUS 32.

The Leafs are currently 21st out of 30 teams in the league....but as we all know the Leafs usually COLLAPSE at the end of the season, so they might very well not finish the season as high up in the standings (ha ha ha) as they are right now.

Leafs #1 !!!

1. Toronto Maple Leafs
Last league title: Stanley Cup, 1967
Claim to shame: See above
In Toronto, the Leafs have elevated torment into an art form. Preschoolers know the team has not won a Stanley Cup since 1967, the longest drought in the league. It has gotten to a point where joking about the team’s futility has itself become cliché. Tim Leiweke made the mistake of mentioning a parade route soon after becoming chief executive of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, a remark he was quickly made to regret. “I didn’t understand when I got here that it was the Montreal phrase for beating the crap out of Leafs fans,” he said later. Toronto has missed the playoffs in eight of the last nine seasons, and the team’s annual downward spiral is already at full speed.

Congrats to the mighty Leafs on breaking out of their scoring slump in a big, BIG way!

We all know that in their last 4 games - all on the road - the Leafs were 0 and 4, picked up ZERO points, and were outscored 12 to 1.

Tonight however the Leafs were back at HOME and were welcoming the 28TH PLACE Carolina Hurricanes. Surely it was time for the proud Leafs to play their best and show off their imposing skills...and they DID:thumb:

Yes, the mighty Leafs DESTROYED all memories of their latest slump by scoring at an unprecedented pace: ONE WHOLE GOAL. Bravo to the mighty Leafs! Here are some of their recent major accomplishments:

Since Randy Carlyle was fired: 1 win, 6 losses, 2 out of a possible 14 points! Looks like firing Randy has solved ALL their problems, doesn't it? Good move Mr. Shanahan. Good move Mr. Nonis.

2 goals in their last 5 games (shut out 3 times, scored 1 twice), all losses.

Tonight's performance by the top 3 forwards: Kessel minus 3, JVR minus 4, Kessel's roommate minus 4.

Nice going, guys:thumb:

Déjà vu all over again. Even Phil the thrill said it been like this the last few years. The question now is what are they going to do about it? What can they do?
