Downtown : 1/ Europea ; 2/ Maison Boulud

Vieux-Montreal : 1/ Toqué ; 2/ XO ; 3/ Mercuri ; 4/ Graziella

Mile end : La Chronique

Classy.

And, I also have to note how surprised I am by all the positive affirmations of Joe Beef. I've been twice, and was never impressed by the cooking, just felt way over-indulgent, even by Montreal standards. Am I bring a skinny prude? (Hahaha, folks who met me at VIP-1 know I'm anything but skinny...) But maybe I need to give it another try. Third time's the charm??

Look behind you.
There is a wild game place called Le Club Chasse et Peche . Has anyone tried this place?

Sister restaurant to Le Filet and Le Serpent. Chasse et Peche is actually the oldest. Lovely patio area in the summers, one of my favorite lunch spots in Montreal. Really relaxing hidden sanctuary during the week when it's not packed, like Mandolin in Miami. Dark and private dinner spot, good for quiet discrete conversations.

Pricey. Food is very good, fresh, and plated professionally, but nothing extraordinary. I think you can find equally good, better even, classic Quebecoise restaurants with wild game in the Plateau. And there's really not that much wild game on the menu. At least nothing that you can't get elsewhere. It was good, but I wasn't impressed. By my rating standard, a star, pushing elite, but no ATF or unicorn. :p

Mile-Ex

I discovered this restaurants a few weeks ago and went to visit it again last night

http://www.mileex.ca/

The location is a bit hidden and out of the way. It's literally a 3 minute walk from my Barbers & since I went for an old school hot towel shave & beard trim last night I figured I'd go back.

Really small restaurant (my kind of place) not inexpensive but not out of control either, has an artsy vibe and is run by hipsters. Really great food, great place for a casual first date. They have an interesting menu but they've always had new dishes every time I've been there so I'm assuming they create dishes on the fly based on what they find freshly available during the day.

Love sitting by the counter and watching them prep the food, very friendly staff.

Tried L'Orignal in Old Port this last trip. "Traditional Canadian" food - guess that means there's some interesting meats? Had the venison tartare and the duck confit. Excellent. The tartare app was huge, I probably should've canceled the duck right after. Super filling meal. I felt quite fat and Canadian walking out of there. :p

Odd hunting lodge-y decor. Hunky bartenders did nothing for me. Super cute waitstaff though. Not quite a date spot, or business meal spot, but perhaps beers and snacks with boys. Yet another solid option in Vieux Port.

Damn, crackman knows steak AND seafood!!!  Merci sharky for yet another recommendation! I'll have to try this place out on the July trip.

My resto TDL is growing. Thankfully, pre-booking restos for lunch and dinner is so much easier! :D

I gotta say I'm dubious though. I've never had great steak in Canada. Only the US, Argentina, Uruguay, and maybe Brazil, can one consistently get great steaks. No matter how fantastic the technique, I've never had steak of equal quality in France, the UK, Spain or anywhere else in the world worth traveling to, to eat. (Kobe is stupid expensive, and is not fair... :p) And I've been to Moishes and Queue de Cheval numerous times. I think they actually serve USDA beef. Apparently not aged well though...

For steak: L'Entrecote St-Jean on Peel corner DeMaisonneuve...terrific New York strip loin steak with fries (Steak & Frites)...in a French bistro atmosphere smack in downtown Montreal!

Order the table d'hôte that includes:

Soup
Salad
Strip loin Steak with fries
Profitéroles for desert

http://www.lentrecotestjean.com/

I liked this place. Great meal and ambiance for a reasonable price.

L'aromate serves Linguini with canard confit. Canard à l'orange is also on the menu.

I've been there a few times and always enjoyed my meals. The salmon was exceptionally good, too.
If you have a sweet tooth, what they call their "sugar pie" is a definite must try :)

It is Montreal, I think you'll have lots of good options for duck confit... If in Old Port / Griffintown, try Le Local and add a side of foie. Decadent. But seriously, you're going to find excellent duck confit everywhere in Montreal. Not that complicated a dish.

You can get a Duck Confit eggs benedict for breakfast at l'Avenue on Mont Royal East.

It's really good!

As wolfie said, any french/terroir restaurant offers pretty good confit, its not as hard has magret to cook it. But some classic place to go eat it, would be L'Express on st-denis or Lemeac on Laurier street.

Excellent intro's and ambassadors of the Montreal resto scene. :thumb: Both restaurants are also fantastic late-night options. I haven't been to L'Express for too many trips. Love the old school bistro feel. A few of their garcons have seemingly been there for over a decade! The roasted quail entree is also fantastic. Lemeac has an after-10pm prix fixe menu every day that is a steal. $25 or something like that for app, entree and dessert - pick anything from those categories from the full menu.

One exception to a classic French resto that doesn't have a great duck confit - Laloux. Surprisingly bland. Especially for an otherwise great restaurant. Maybe I was there on an off day for lunch...

Au Cinquieme Peche (Le Plateau) - Chasse et Peche reminded me of this place I went before, but annoyingly couldn't remember exactly when and where and the name. If you like 'exotic' game and meats, this is the place. It's on St. Denis, just a block from another MERB-recommended resto Les Trois Petits Bouchons. Grilled veal tongue, sweetbreads, a seal poutine !! It was delicious. Damn, I'm going to be thinking about food the rest of this morning...

Funny how everyone seems to like this place! I thought their food was terrible

Enfin!!

Terrible. Jamais compris pourquoi les gens font la file pour ce resto.

C'est meilleur l'Entrepôt à 4,95$ l'assiette. ;-)

Is it possible that these laudatory comments were (exclusively) made by American merbites visiting Montréal?

Between you and me...we all know how bad are the restaurants in the USA (except in New York and LA...and probably other (few) places)

Well.... Never went there but for breakfast/brunch they seem famous they regularly get 20+ line up on week end waiting outside even during the winter..

For myself i heard all kind of comment about that place..

Le Steerburger Tous Les Jours est un excellent resto pas cher sur le Plateau. C'est là qu'il faut déjeuner, touristes du Plateau. Ou encore chez Ma-am-m Bolduc.
