Should we change the term "hobby" for something else?

I don't know how an innocent sounding word such as "hobby" has turned into an issue on language matters.

anyone reading reviews or some of the opinions outside of this " hobby" would classify the language used as pure smut.

I agree. As Hungry101 has said, many times, this age of PC has become tiresome and even revolting in it's extreme over-sensitivity. "Hobby" is already a PC word IMHO considering what it refers to, and now there are opinions we should lighten that further. If we take it further into such extreme PC sensitivity, and be consistent with that everywhere (the only way any change makes sense) then I can't see how any kind of vaguely informative review can be written to that standard. At best a review about meeting a woman leading to sex would sound like two trains passing in the night. You surely could not use acronyms referring to sex, you couldn't even offer a description of the escort since that would be ogling and objectifying a woman. In effect, what would be the point of this board.

There are certain inevitabilities about what is necessary to have a valid escort review board. Make it so vanilla to avoid any offense and the escorts or agencies couldn't do much more than sell lemonade, never mind promoting "acronyms for a price". Certainly no client would ever be able to tell what they were getting into or why there was any difference between any escort or agency.

This is a lurid activity. It should not read like Mary Poppins.

I don't think the original poster intended the subject to become so badly misdirected. To answer the original poster, NO, there's no need to change the term "hobby".

Because you do have an agenda Smuler which is being judgmental about things you know absolutely nothing about. You are the single most judgmental person I have met in this hobby and don't even know it.

I would say that 99 % of the people on the board would disagree with you on this..
I have no need to be the center of attention..it's not in my nature

Being judgmental about things you know nothing about and being the "center of attention" having nothing to do with each other. And in regards to people I have spoken to your % would be way off. You can believe whatever it is you want to believe. It's also very ironic to hear from a "VIP designated party greeter" that he doesn't enjoy being the center of attention, but that is not what I said about you.

Smuler was "asked" to help with the party's EB, he graciously accepted but just to make clear he never approached me for the "job" and he is hardly the center of attention, i can think of 60-80 ladies per party who are more the center of attention than him or any other guy lol.

As far as this thread goes, i also never liked the word "hobby" thus whenever i do use it i use " " but just today a beautiful young lady sent me a pm that she would love to come to VIP-8 and even tho she is mostly retired because of her new career, she still "want to have some fun with that HOBBY" so if the ladies are ok with that term then i guess there is not much else to say. I still will always use the " " when i write "hobby" until someone thinks of a more appropriate name. It is what is is.

" Vacation"

Don't think it will stick but for me seeing an SP is an escape, a vacation so to speak, mental vacation anyway.

I do it maybe twice a month, sometimes once , sometimes three, sometimes zero.
Its a break from responsibilities , real world...to just enjoy the moment and hopefully the session goes well.
I am fully aware of whats going in terms of the exchange and maybe that why it never became a problem for me as it has for some.
I don't go on vacations every other day and I don't use SP services either every other day either.
When you stay on a resort in many Caribbean countries the resort certainly doesn't reflect the real world of that country outside the resort itself.

Aha! You are a Vacationist! But what is some SP says "Hey I don't like that. I'm nobody's vacation." Then you're screwed. We won't be able to use that either.

I have to agree with this. Smuler is one of the least seekers of attention i've met who is connected (like most of us) to the sex business. He does his own thing and doesn't give a fuck what people think. Hey, just like the Doc! :D

I didn't claim to be the best reviewer or even a significant reviewer. I just stated the facts of the reviews I wrote, most of which are short and to the point. And the term I used described exactly what I had reviewed.

I for one wished you reviewed more. I've always enjoyed reading your reviews, EB. I've always got hard while reading the juicier details and i'm sure i wasn't alone. ;)

Is there a poll for the most ridiculous thread on merb? Because this one should be considered for nomination.
There's nothing wrong with the term hobby and I can't imagine how anyone might be insulted by it. Seriously, I can imagine many worse descriptions that could be used - hobby is light-hearted, fun and polite in my opinion.

I have a feeling that some people will dislike whatever term you come up with, you will not be able to please them.

As always, You are so right. Yes, there are whiners out there that embrace victim-hood at every turn. I can just see them now:

Now these evil white males are calling themselves hobbyists....but I'm nobodies hobby! Let's protest. Let's make signs and t-shirts saying I'm nobodies hobby!!!!

Tianna, you are different. You are one of us. In fact, On behalf of the Hobbyists on MERB or in my case the Phil Donahues or PDs ( we are still trying to sort this out - see other thread) I would like to make you an honorary hobbyist (or PD if you prefer that term). I just don't want to offend you and just in case I did I already apologize and I will grovel at your feet the next time I see you.

Some of the reactions in this thread seem like overheated responses by men who feel threatened by a broader sense of cultural change and political impotence. The OP's intentions were hardly an aggressive assault on the word "hobby" or some venerable tradition; he simply wondered if the word was offensive and, if so, wondered whether we should change it and what other words might work. That seems reasonable and thoughtful. I don't think there's any movement out here to change the word, but I do think that every so often questioning the word, all our words, all our attitudes, is healthy. Why not? After all, the original question is whether escorts find the word "hobby" to be offensive; the OP's goal was not to make a political statement but to show respect and appreciation for escorts. How can that be wrong? Lets keep in mind that the "whiners" in this debate are some of the women we see. Personally, if escorts like the term, then it works for me; if they are offended, then I think we should change it. Pretty simple. Do escorts on the whole mind the term? I don't know. A couple escort twitter comments one way and a couple merb comments the other way don't really tell us much; we're talking about a broader cultural attitude, in Montreal and/or beyond. So why not ask: is the word offensive? Why not try to get an answer? Why jump into a defensive reaction to any request to change our language in order to show more respect for a group (escorts) whom we purport to admire?

Feelings, wo-o-o feelings,

Man, why are people on the internet so rude? Why is there so much resistance to civil conversation? Why as a culture are we so averse to intelligent, thoughtful discussion? I truly, truly don't understand incivility and hostility in a conversation that could be interesting. I guess I'm just old school; I like to hear what people are thinking and I like exchanging ideas. I don't see any point in exchanging insults; no one learns anything, no one listens, nothing gets done.

Why are people so easily offended? They are just words. Do you really car what some random stranger on the internet says or thinks?

If anyone is offended by hobby don't use the term call it something else but don't try to impose your insecurities on others.

People really have to quit being so sensitive.

I think you're missing the point. I couldn't care less what someone out here says to me; it means nothing to me personally. My point was that we have lost the capacity for civil discourse and intelligent debate. For example, I would like to discuss whether words matter; I think they do. But it doesn't seem that this board is much in the mood for serious discussion, only pounding the tables. As a culture, we have abandoned the capacity to listen (cf: Trump); we only assert our points.
