Schwartz's is better. Only smokehouse on premises in Montreal. All other smoked meat purveyors are injecting chemicals into the meat. Only Schwartz's is made on premises in a smokehouse grandfathered in by law. No other place can be compared because they are the only purveyor who is making true smoked meat and not meat infused with chemicals.

I hate Dunn's. I mostly go to Reuben's since it's in the heart of downtown Mtl. I've never been to Schwartz's since it's too far from where i stay & the few times i've walked by it, there are always lineups and i hate lineups. But if you want my opinion on the best smoked meat sandwich, it's Schwart's.

Pete Smoke meat at Ile Perrot is the best,you can taste the smoke a lot.:thumb:

Main's and Lesters are better than Schwartz's and Dunn's IMO.

Schwartz is the best ! Don't take the lean one is too dry ! The only reason of the existence of the main smoked meat is to catch the rest of the line up of Schwartz ! And also the smoked meat from main comes from Schwartz !
Second best is Lester on Bernard !
But it's an old question like the bagels ! Fairmount have the best bagels ! Saint viateur once they cool down they suck !

If the meat is not smoked in a smokehouse what you are eating is a bastardized version of the real thing. Schwartz's has the only smokehouse in Montreal proper. Accept no substitutes! Real is real and bastardized is bastardized.

On bagels Fairmount or St. Viateur but bagel must be consumed within hours of leaving those ovens.

This is like French baguette ,Freshness is vital ,Any bread or same family that has low levels to no fat in the ingredient list will harden faster then the bread who has higher level of fat .
Shortening or lard keeps the moisture and taste level at its peak for a longer time .
Hamburger buns for example has most of the time a 10 % fat content and higher sugar content then crusty bread or bagels .
The reason why I know I was a Bakery supervisor in my early career and head Baker before, handling a production line of a variety of breads ,bagels ,donuts ,buns ,etc....

You can't go wrong with either Schwartz's or Lester's for smoked meat in Montreal.

However in my book, Lester's on Bernard street is the best! And their karnatzels are simply amazing...

I believe Reubens buys their smoked meat from Lesters.

Went with Mr. Holliday to a Leafs/habs game last year the night after GG3 and we were in the Montreal Casino Suite and whomever does the catering for them should be applauded as the smoked meat was amazing! Seriously one of the best smoked meats i have ever had bar none.

Thanks for all the tips...the reason I asked about Dunns, was that I remembered the original one and enjoyed going there a lot of times...just looking for the same...thanks

I have to agree that Schawartz's is the best but Abies on St Jean in the west island is a close second. Abie and his father worked at Schwartz's for many, many years and decided to take the experience to the suburbs. The advantage of Abies is that you can get thye Schwartz's experience without going downtown, without the line up and without the parking problems ;)

Smoke Meat Pete...you can't beat Pete's meat! Comparable to Schwartz but better fries (they double fry them) and great atmosphere with live blues music, easy parking, no traffic. Summer outdoor patio! Ile Perrot right off highway 20...right next to the Dairy Queen...you can't miss it.

Abie's is very good for a quick bite, but is a tired looking place with zero atmosphere...really an eat and run place.

Schwartz is great for the history, good smoked meat but in my opinion is overrated, not worth searching for parking then waiting in line outside in the rain, snow, cold or heat with the tourists.

I've been to Dunns recently. Pretty average if you ask me.

I haven't been to Ruebens or Lesters in many years.

schwartz's before being bought by the angelil group was the best. kinda like nickels back in the days before being bought by the angelil group. they were good.

nowadays, schwartz's is simply too inconsistent to be considered the best. they've been splitting the crowd 50-50 for the last couple of years. half loves it, the other half don't. smoke meat pete is amongst the best if not considered the best right now. too bad its so far away. if it wasn't that far away, you'd see more people praising it, locals and tourists alike
