Did anyone here (or know anyone) fly into YUL in recent months and skipped the hotel quarantine and instead just quarantined at home?

Border to remain closed until Canadians are 75% fully vaccinated. Arcording to this article August might be a possibility because of the expected delivery of 68 million vaccine doses at the end of July:

I’ve sadly written off Montreal this year, though I do believe it is possible if not probable the border opens to US citizens in 2021. I just think it’s going to be chaotic once US travelers are allowed across, and I’d anticipate Montreal bars and restaurants having many restrictions. No thanks I’ll wait. The loss of June and July is devastating for many businesses counting on US tourists.

US News and World Report is reporting Ottawa officials are saying it will be months before borders open to US travelers.

Yes that's a good news....each year--summer environ 2 millions d'Américains visitent Montréal :) ....et occupent en majorité les Hôtels du Centre-Ville et contribuent à une entrée massive d'argent in the city.....Montréal hope to see you again soon...:).

This risk I see is if traveler test positive, they can’t fly back into US until testing negative.

So a one week trip to Montreal can turn into a 2-3 week trip. There are worst places to get stuck but it could mean extra weeks of hotels.

For those of us living near the border, driving could be a better bet. I do not believe the CDC negative test order applies to land border.

Around the corner
I think by end of this year all this BS with negative tests etc will be gone.
It would be much more logical to simply have a vaccine passport and allow any US or Canadian citizen with any double dose of an approved vaccine mixed or not in either country travel freely without any restrictions as far as the virus.

it's going to be a shit show when the border reopens. all the SPs and hotels will be FULLY booked. it's going to be so packed makes me want to not come lol

if agencies had stock.. i would buy it.

last time i was in Montreal was a year ago and having not gone out in a year, i saved up a lot to go crazy on my next trip back
I was thinking the same thing. But then I thought about it and I would imagine that most travelers to Montreal are not only going for the SP's. Events like the formula one racing and maybe the Jazzfest can cause a shortage of SP's. But, for the most part there should be plenty of ass for all of us.

I anticipate a shit show as well which is why I’ve written off Canada until January. I would absolutely recommend driving over flying for those bold enough to travel up there. Airports will be a zoo relative to checking vaccine status, tests, questions, etc. I’m not going to participate in the customs dress rehearsals.

The mere thought of a long weekend turning into a week or more because of a positive test makes me really nervous. I’ll pay the extra $ here for the peace of mind. At the same time, I do think those who jump first will get great options. I really don’t think you’re going to see a lot of guys traveling up there right out of gate. I think Aug and early fall will be very light for hobbying excursions.

COVID-19 live updates: Canadian borders will open to fully vaccinated Americans on Aug. 9

On Sept. 7, “provided that Canada’s COVID-19 epidemiology remains favourable,” the borders will be opened to fully vaccinated travellers from other countries….

I will wait to cross the Border….

Starting August 9 for fully vaccinated Americans. Pre arrival testing required.
I was reading elsewhere that pre arrival testing would be random and you wouldn’t be required to pay for it. Also would be interested to find out what will be acceptable proof of vaccination. Either way this is good news.

Canada may subject you to random post-arrival testing.

Everyone needs a pre-arrival test within 72 hours prior to departure (if by air) or arrival at land border. CDC card would very likely be acceptable at face value similar to what European countries and Hawaii have done. There's no other way as US government has repeatedly indicated they are not setting up a vaccine passport.

Just to reiterate again, if flying, you also need a test taken less than 72 hours prior to flight returning to US. If you do a trip for less than 3 days, a test taken in US would be valid for flying in both directions.

I don’t think the US and Canada ever fixed the travel loophole allowing Canadians to fly into the states. So Canadians have been permitted to travel to the states all along as long as it was by plane.

I think the U.S. is using a three day test instead of a strict 72-hour test. That can stretch the legal period a little beyond 72 hours.

“Why does the Order specify 3 days rather than 72 hours? What is considered 3 days?
The 3-day period is the 3 days before the flight’s departure. The Order uses a 3-day timeframe instead of 72 hours to provide more flexibility to the traveler. By using a 3-day window, test validity does not depend on the time of the flight or the time of day that the test was administered.

For example, if a passenger’s flight is at 1pm on a Friday, the passenger could board with a negative test that was taken any time on the prior Tuesday or after.

What is an attestation?
An attestation is a statement, writing, entry, or other representation under 18 U.S.C. § 1001 that confirms that the information provided is true.

Does this Order apply to land border crossings?
No, the requirements of this Order only apply to air travel into the US.”
Yes US requirement is 3-day (not 72 hour). Depending on where you live (and how much you want to spend), rapid NAAT are available. So you could take a test on Tuesday morning, hop on a flight right after and meet up with providers from Tuesday afternoon to Friday afternoon and hop on an early evening flight back to US.

If you want to stay longer and not sure how to navigate Canadian testing, then there's eMed BinaxNOW remotely proctored test. It is accepted by DL/AA/UA for entry into the US (not sure about entry into Canada or AC).

You can buy 1 or 2 kits from selected Walgreens or order a 6 pack delivered ($150USD). You schedule a video session and they watch you administered the test.

I know some of us are in he Northeast. Driving is likely the safer bet. Pre-Covid, doing a one-way rental between YUL and Northeast was an option (in case positive test preventing flying into US). I have not seen any one-way rental available at all this year.
