I watched much of the Thiem - Zverev match. It was rather scratchy. Both made too many errors. Thiem needs to show something much better if he wants to have a chance against Djokovic. And he can, his match against Nadal was really good.

I was worried for Kenin because her opponent in this match is a MUCH bigger woman, but Sophia prevailed!

You can say that again!

At first i thought Kenin was a small girl but next to the ball girls she didn't look that small anymore. So i concluded also that Muguruza is one heck of a big woman!

Nice to see the Russian-born American win her first grandslam. Time for tennis to see some new blood!

I don't know why but I worry about vastly superior size and the overpowering of a player more on the women's side than the men's side. Perhaps that is because historically all the large male players on tour, or most of them, were one trick ponies with big serves and they could not move well, and ultimately got exposed by smaller, quicker, more nimble and mobile players. I suppose the Kenin match played out in much the same fashion, and my concern about her smaller size was unwarranted.

Garbine is 6 feet tall. Which for a women is very tall indeed.

But at 5'7'' Kenin is not that short. There is other shorter girl who have won masters.

Cheers,

Congrats to Sofia kenin ,she has a great fighting spirit with an intense game ... she beat some really good players on her way to the trophy and I hope she continues to do well , I hope she won’t be a one hit wonder

About the mismatch in height that’s how it goes . Being shorter you will be a better mover and therefore be able to better cover the court .
The bigger players obviously have a better power game . But Muguruza didn’t serve well ,,, but then again those double faults were caused because of how Kenin was returning I think , she was forced to go for the corners and go bigger

I hope the men’s final is a good one and even though I’m a big Joker fan I’ll be rooting for Thiem to finally break through... so far he’s been clutch in tiebreakers at the Australian and I hope it continues

This is no longer the case. Look at Zverev or (especially) Medvedev. Both are 6' 6'' and superb movers.

That said, I am very glad for Sonya Kenin too. I did not expect her victory at all.

There is other shorter girl who have won masters.

Women don't have masters. Perhaps it could make sense to learn something about the sport before commenting.

Cheers,

It's not all about height, it's also body mass. Kenin was giving away 35 pounds- 126 to Mugu's 161.

In any event congrats to Joker on his 17th major win. It's now very tght!

Federer -20
Nadal - 19
Joker - 17

I don't see Federer winning again. I see Nadal winning #20 at the French Open and tying Federer. And Joker could tie both of them eventually. It's amazing that the 3 guys with the most career majors of all time all were contemporaries. Consider how many they each would have won if they did not have each other to beat, just everybody else. It is truly remarkable what the 3 have accomplished.

2 Aussie Opens in a row for the Djoker. No better tennis player than a healthy Djoker! The victory means he will return to #1 in the rankings, replacing Nadal.

Last year in the Aussie Open final Djoker destroyed Nadal, and this year he took care of Thiem in a gutsy come from behind performance!

I feel sorry for Thiem. He has been racking up some runner up finishes. He may be the Vitas Gerulaitis of this era. Close but no cigar. Vitas was good but just didn’t have the weapons to beat Connors, McEnroe or Borg back in the day. Now Thiem is similarly stuck behind these top players.

This time Djokovic in fact looked tout à fait battable. Which probably should sting Thiem even more, he was really so close. But he seems to be a tough kid, I am sure he will get a bunch of slams in the near future. The above comparison with Vitas Gerulaitis is ridiculous.

Thiem's career high ranking is #4, whereas Gerulaitas peaked at #3. Vitas did win an Australian Open so leads Thiem in Majors 1-0. Unfortunately Vitas is primarily known for some terrible straight set defeats to McEnroe and Borg at US and French Opens, which demonstrated that he was not on the same level as a player as those tennis immortals. So right now Thuem at age 26 has yet to achieve as high a ranking or win a major as did Vitas. It's not yet as good a career.

Australian Open was a second-rate tournament back then, the strongest players rarely bothered to travel there, if ever. Borg did just once, for example.

And it is nothing unusual to lose a few slam finals before winning a bunch. Agassi lost three, Lendl lost four. Thiem will win a few as well.
