Your infielders position themselves according to the batter,pitcher and the type of pitch that is forthcoming.
If the expectation is that if the batter hits "right" and is a pull hitter the second baseman will play closer to second, the shortstop in the hole towards third and the third baseman will guard the line. If there is a runner on first,the first baseman may or may not hold the runner and with the pitch move towards second. No runner the first baseman would cheat towards second.
If the batter hits "left" and is a pull hitter there is a clockwise defensive rotation with variations for baserunners.
Other variables include, the pitcher - power or junk, double play situation,
score, game situation, batters bat speed,etc.
