still upset GSG that the habs did nothing to improve your soft small team this summer? You got a center and Briere is a beast! LOL.... well, the 25yr old Danny B was, not so much now. George Parros? Yea, Orr, Dion, McLaren, Fraser and Clarkson are really really scared of the "Stache"

PS, this is not the free for all thread, do you ever learn or looking for a nice summer vacation?

YES! :D

boy you are quick! Huge addition and easily helps with the loss of Clarky for 10 games. I have a feeling Joe Colborne or Carter Ashton will get the other open spot that Raymond WAS gonna take on the third line, because likely Mason R. will take over for Clarkson for the first 10 now, unless Kulemin gets a bump up to the top 6.

Franson to be traded now you think? Offer sheet? I am loving what i see in Paul Ranger so we could let Franson go if he wont sign a reasonable contract. Dont want to but it will not be the end of the world if it does happen with all the depth we have on D.

Now i wonder what Nonis, Poulin & Loiselle will do to keep the team under the cap. All kinds of scenarios have been mentionned, including having only 20 players on the current roster. Hopefully a transaction with another team will be made, likely involving J-M Liles. I can't see Liles being shipped out to the minors considering the number of years he has left. Maybe the guy who signed him to that big contract, Burke, can do the Leafs a favor & welcome him in Calgary. Any takers for Phaneuf maybe? I doubt the Leafs will re-sign him at his current amount, and i'd rather see them getting something for him instead of nothing.

The Leafs have just sent prospect Joe Colborne to the Calgary Flames for a 4th-rounder. Nice of the Leafs to send him to his hometown since he was going to get cut tomorrow and shipped back to the Marlies.

Once Joe Colborne's hockey career is over, he has a job waiting for him in the family business. His billionaire parents own an Alberta oil company.

Nice Nonis/Burke trade and Big Joe will get much more of a shot to play in Calgary then in Toronto where there simply was little room for him. Next up, Liles?

Not sure about Liles. Maybe the savings from shipping Colborne out is just what the team needed to be under the cap.

If not, Liles will likely be put on waivers tonight and then be sent down tomorrow. But with the new cap rules taking effect, the Leafs wouldn't be saving much by keeping him in the minors. Teams can now only save a fraction out of a contract's cap amount. In Liles' case, it would only be just over $900 000, give or take.

I just took a look at Cap Geek.

It now appears that after the Colbrorne trade, the Leafs are now $383 333 under the cap. Until i hear differently, i assume Liles is staying in Toronto as the team's 7th defenceman.

Unless, of course, the team decides to keep Morgan Rielly, but i believe it would be foolish to keep him and not send him back to junior if he'll barely get any ice-time in Toronto. Let the kid develop properly and maintain your control over him for an extra year or so. Don't repeat the same mistake you made with Luke Schenn by not sending him back to junior when he was 18.

By the way, i still think the habs made a grave mistake by keeping Galchenyuk with the big club at such a young age. Time will tell.

Another terrible Leaf trade - watch him light it up in Calgary after being given little chance in Toronto with this sad-sack organization. Another example of this bottom-feeding organization giving up on prospects. I guess the Leafs would prefer to spend money and give bench space to cement heads like Orr and McLaren.

Toronto Maple Leafs : 46 years of futility and counting ...

Strong words from the supporter of a team that hasn't won anything in over 20 years. A team that would rather spend its money on so-called "cement heads" like Travis Moen, Brandon Prust & now George Parros instead of spending it on promising players like Louis Leblanc & Nathan Beaulieu.

Montreal Canadiens: 20 years of futility & counting.....and counting.....and counting.

Yet the fan base brags about their team like its the best team in the league year after year. But what do you expect of a fan base when its home city only has NHL hockey as a legitimate professional sport? No more Expos, no NBA, no NFL, nothing except crappy low-budget wannabe professional sport leagues to entertain the locals when their 'habitants' are not on the ice. Sad.

It's safe to say that the entire Merb community will be dead by the time this overrated organization that scares away any quality free agents (including the homegrown ones) will win a Cup again.

p.s. After Serge Savard, Rejean "Peanut" Houle, Bob Gainey, Pierre "Ghost" Gauthier & now Marc Bergevin, what is the main critieria required when they pick a GM? Do they always have to chose the ugliest GM candidates in entire professional sports? Just wondering.

A note in regards to the Joe Colborne trade: that 4th-round pick could be turned into a 3rd-round pick if the Flames make the playoffs & Colborne gets 10 goals or 30 points.

J-M Liles, Korbinian Holzer & T.J. Brennan put on waivers by the Leafs today.

Leafs hope that Liles will be picked up (a slim chance!) and then likely will ship him to the Marlies. But maybe not. The David Clarkson suspension complicates things, but there is still a small chance he'll be kept as the 7th defenceman. Or does it mean that he'll be shipped out while Morgan Reilly gets to start the season with the Leafs & be shipped out to his junior team when his initial tryout period ends?

We'll find out tomorrow.

p.s. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Oilers picking up Holzer. On another note, the Oilers have named Brad Ference as their team captain.

Phil "The Thrill" likely to stay in Toronto for years to come.....

An extension to his current & expiring contract will likely be announced prior to tonight's opener against the hated habs. The deal is expected to be at $8 million for 8 years. That's a very good deal if you ask me, since he would have got the same amount and term from many US teams.....in US dollars.

Once the deal is confirmed, it'll be time for Nonis, Poulin & Loiselle to get together with the Phaneuf camp and get him signed to a long-term deal. Many believe that the only way he'll stay in Toronto is if he accepts a lower amount than the current one, but the Leafs (and insiders) are fully aware that there is a team out there which will overpay him. So if the Leafs want their 25+ minutes-a-game defenceman to remain in Toronto, they'll likely have to give him the same amount he'll get somewhere else, or risk losing him for nothing. Any defenceman who plays for 25+ minutes a game on any team would be difficult to replace, and the Leafs know this. Plus, coach Carlyle loves him!

Frazier & Kulemin out at least a couple of weeks due to injuries.

Spencer Abbott recalled from the Marlies to take over Kulemin's spot.

Whom, you may ask? No clue. I didn't even know until now that the Marlies had a player named Spencer Abbott.
