This trade opens the door to pursue $teven $tamko$, it also leaves the vacancy for Stammer to be Captain, could this be the plan?

Grrrrrrrrrreat to see a true hockey trade again, not many of them anymore.

This trade free up a lot of cap space. But short term the Leafs have lost their leader and best defence man. This rebuild is going to be painful. And their is no guarantee they will sign Stamkos.

This trade ensures the tank is alive, people forget that is a big big part of trading Dion. The top 5-6 players in the draft are blue chip prospects and as many as the top 3, maybe even 4 could be franchise type players, could be, but the sure bet is Matthews which many said had he been available last year, he likely would have went ahead of Eichel at #2, just behind McDavid. Matthews stock has risen this year because he is dominating overseas in a mens league, this kid is the real deal folks. Watch the Oilers win the lottery again

This trade free up a lot of cap space.

No it doesn't. Toronto has actually acquired $1 million more in cap money. It's in 2017 that the cap savings will show once those contracts they got back expire. Many expect them to buy out Greening, Michalek or Cowan, but i doubt it'll happen. I'm actually thinking that they have plans for Cowan, although he was in Ottawa's dog house for some time. And they'll probably try to trade Michalek and Greening, but i doubt it'll happen this season due to their current contracts.

Trading Phaneuf now, which many thought was impossible, will only help Toronto's position in the standings in order to draft one of the top 5 players available. It's similar to what the Sabres did last season. Gaining with substraction.

Toronto had the cap space available to sign Stamkos next July even before the recent trade. But i honestly don't know if the Leafs would be interested in him now. I know for certain he'd like to play for the Leafs next season, but the timing may be wrong by a couple of years or so.

By the way, if Stamkos winds up in NJ, i'm no longer watching hockey. Why? Because i'm 100% certain it won't happen. He's either staying put or signing with his hometown team.

Leafs lost to the Oilers tonight. It was expected considering half the team were Marlies. But it's all going according to plan. If everything works out like it's supposed to, the Leafs will finish last and have a 20% chance at drafting first overall.

Only 20%? If they finish last are they guaranteed first OR second at least?

No. Only 20%, which was the same percentage the last-place team got last season, which is how the Oilers (instead of the Sabres) wound up with the 1st overall selection. Little tidbit about last season's lottery: when the Oilers lottery ball came out giving them the first overall selection, the Leafs at that moment actually had better odds to win the lottery.

But the system was altered starting this season. There will be three lotteries. Once the first draw will be made, there will be a second one for the #2 overall. And once that draw is done, there will be a third draw for the #3 overall selection.

Here is the NHL lottery simulator, with how the order would look if the season ended today, and the odds of being able to nab the #1 pick. Click on 'pick winner' three times:

so if the leafs finish last there guaranteed no worse than the 4th overall pick?

Exactly. Same thing with the 2nd spot. And the worse position for the 3rd spot would be the 5th selection.

In other words, the Leafs must finish last or second-last to guarantee them a top 4 pick.

the top 6 or 7 picks could all be core players to any franchise i believe. Is anyone besides Matthews expected to be a franchise player though?

The top 4 picks all are expected to be 'core' players. They're all expected to play start their careers with the team that drafts them. Mathews is the only projected 'franchise' player of that bunch. Those players don't come around often. They are considered 'generational' players: Mathews, McDavid, Crosby, Stamkos.

By the way, it's a toss-up between Laine and Puljujarvi on whom will be drafted second. Personally, i'd go with Puljujarvi, whom i loved watching at the junior worlds. But if the Leafs wind up picking 2nd, it wouldn't surprise me to see them flip that pick with the #3 or #4 team since i have a feeling Tkachuk is the player they'd love to draft other than Mathews. The Leafs love drafting OHL players. Plus Tkachuk has a good pedigree. He's Keith Tkachuk's son.

The clean-up continues: Leafs trade Shawn Matthias to Colorado

TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to trade their present for a better shot at the future.

Toronto sent 28-year-old Shawn Matthias to Colorado on Sunday afternoon for a 2016 fourth-round pick and prospect Colin Smith.

As has been their strategy, the Leafs keep piling up assets for the future, acquiring picks and prospects at the expense of the present. The club, which sits last in the NHL’s overall standings with 50 points, now has 12 picks for the upcoming draft in Buffalo, N.Y. after picking nine players last June in Florida.

“There’s no question, I think, the scouting staff always gets excited with the more picks they have,” Leafs general manager Lou Lamoriello said in a conference call following the trade. “Nine (picks) is high, but to have 11 or 12 (picks) is quite a bit.”

The thought process behind the acquisition of so many selections is simple. The Leafs want to give Mark Hunter, the team’s director of player personnel, and his scouting staff as many cracks at the draft process as possible. More picks mean more potential in the organization for the future.

Toronto started purging its roster for the long-term a year ago, sending out veterans like Cody Franson, Mike Santorelli, Phil Kessel, Daniel Winnik, and Dion Phaneuf, among others, for some combination of picks, prospects and cap space.

That process is sure to continue ahead of the Feb. 29 trade deadline with a number of expiring contracts _ P.A. Parenteau, Michael Grabner, and Roman Polak among them — presenting value to potential playoff teams.

The Leafs signed a slew of veterans to short-term deals last summer with the implicit hope of swapping them for future assets at the deadline. Matthias, who scored his sixth goal on the season in an overtime loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, was among that group.

“You look at it as to what is best for your team, what’s best for today, what’s best for tomorrow,” Lamoriello said. “This gives us an opportunity to stay along the plan that has been put in place, that we’ve consistently stuck with and continue to do so.”

For the 2016 draft the Leafs now hold: two first-round picks (one becomes a second if the Penguins fail to make the playoffs), one second-round pick, two third-round picks, two fourth-round picks, two fifth-round picks, two sixth-round picks and one in the seventh.

Smith, 22, has 13 goals and 21 assists in 54 games with the AHL’s San Antonio Rampage this season. He will join the Toronto Marlies, currently the top team in the AHL.

Sharks acquire Polak, Spaling from Maple Leafs
San Jose sends second-round picks in 2017 and 2018, and Torres, to Toronto

NHL.com said:
The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Roman Polak and forward Nick Spaling from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday.

In return the Maple Leafs receive the Sharks' second-round picks in the 2017 and 2018 NHL Drafts, and forward Raffi Torres.

"Roman and Nick are both quality, character players that will complement and enhance our current roster," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson said. "Our existing group of players has battled hard and they have earned the right to have every chance to succeed this season."

Polak, 29, had 13 points in 55 games and was fourth on the Maple Leafs in average ice time per game at 19:44.

Spaling, 27, scored his first goal of the season in the Maple Leafs' 5-4 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. In 35 games he had seven points.

It's the third trade this month for the Maple Leafs and second in two days. On Sunday they traded forward Shawn Matthias to the Colorado Avalanche for forward Colin Smith a fourth-round pick in the 2016 draft.

On Feb. 9 they traded defensemen Dion Phaneuf and Cody Donaghey and forwards Casey Bailey, Matt Frattin and Ryan Rupert to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Jared Cowen, forwards Milan Michalek, Colin Greening and Tobias Lindberg, and a second-round pick in the 2017 draft.

Torres, 34, has played six games this season with San Jose of the American Hockey League, and the Maple Leafs announced he would be re-assigned to San Jose of the AHL. He has not played a regular-season NHL game since March 8, 2014.

It's not Torres that their interested in, it's the draft picks. Draft pick and young players on entry level contracts are a valuable commodity.
