Where I belong.
there were on MLB players...
Well, I did mention Le Grande Orange a few posts back, but it didn't seem to get a lot of support. There is, or course, also Eric Gagne.

Ahhh ... Merci Rumples. ;)
Oui to Staub ... NO to Gagne ... unless we need 2 to make a "list", then he gets on by default ... lol.

What's the difference between Louis Pasteur and Martin of Exxtase?

The first one was dealing with germs the other one is dealing with gems.

Okay, I agree not the best joke but I would like to add to Jman47 to following names:

Among the top philosophers we have to mention: Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, Paul Ricoeur

Among the top composers I would add: Olivier Messian

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Maybe one the leading Frenachman of the last Century,

nice list Jman, but seeing how much your into "flowers", i am surprised of all people you left off Guy Lafleur :)
For consideration (found this in a search)...many listed here are already mentioned but I thought an approach by category would net some deeper thought...

I considered both Guy Lafleur and Jacques Cousteau as nominees. I decided to go with Maurice Richard as the choice as the great French sportsman because in addition to being a great hockey player, he was a man of considerable social and political importance as was depicted in the movie "Maurice Richard". If there were enough poll choices, my other nominees as great sportsmen would have been Cousteau, Lafleur and Jean-Claude Killy in that order. Of course with Cousteau, he was more than just a sportsman, but that is the general category I was thinking of. Zinedine Zidane is another guy I thought about, and had he not head butted Materazzi and had France won the World Cup in 2006, as they should have, he would have gotten the nomination in this category.

I'd vote for Mario Lemieux ahead of all those guys.

Not only did Mario The Magnificient dominate in his era (while battling crippling back injuries & cancer), he also became a Stanley Cup-winning owner just a few years after he retired.

Martin of XXXtase is leading the poll by 1 vote over a charging Louis Pasteur!

I vote for 'Peter of Satin Dreamz', who's been in this business for as long as i can remember. Martin's mamma was still changing his diapers when 'Peter' was running his first agency.

And what about 'Martin of Asservissante'? He's still one of the most likeable agency owners out there & was around when i first dipped my feet into the hobby.

This is getting stupid. Is there anyone vaguely French NOT on the list? I'm waiting for some Beret Blanc nut to add Marshal Petain to the list.

For Canadian politics, i'd vote for Wilfrid Laurier ahead of that prick Trudeau, who did more wrong than good for Canada. They hate him in Quebec!

Heck, i'd go for Rene Levesque ahead of Trudeau!!

If you were including athletes the logical choice would have been Jean Beliveau. Not only was he a great player but he was a class act on and off the ice.

My problem with Beliveau is that he was totally shut down by Dave Keon in the 1967 Stanley Cup Finals, permitting the Toronto Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup, which I believe is the last one that they won. That's why I gave the nod to Richard. That and the social and political importance of certain aspects of Richard's career, as depicted in the movie.

Why Martin of XXXtase?

Martin of XXXtase was a no brainer as my choice as the French agency owner nominee. He's been extremely successful in the escort agency business and in the restaurant business. A lot of other successful business owners have dreamed of having their own successful escort agency on the side. Martin has actually lived that dream.

But, if I were to do a poll of greatest escort agency owners, Peter of Satin Dreamz, Martin of Asservissante, John of Eleganza, Chris of Devilish, and Jessy of Montreal Sex City would all be certain nominees. I think someone already did such a poll a few years ago and all of the above were included.

Hello all,

Isn't French identity also so deeply connected to art and fashion.

I would add the Impressionists as a group;

Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Frederic Bazille, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cézanne, and Armand Guillaumin, Edgar Degas, Mary Cassat, Edouard Manet, and Goerges Seurat.

Fashion Designers:

Coco Chanel, Pierre Cardin, Jean Paul Gautier, Hubert Givenchy, Yves St. Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, etc.

The French architect who designed Washington D. C., Pierre Charles L'Enfant.

Cheers,

Merlot

about Eric Gagne, he was phenominal for a couple years, but over the course of time he turned into a former shell of himself. Def not on the "List" for the obvious reasons you pointed out.

There's nothing great about a drug abuser & cheater. I'd put it at the bottom of the barrel.

Igna,

Eric Gagne would not be the choice as the greatest baseball player of French ancestry even if he had been clean. That honor very easily goes to Hall of Famer Napoleon "Nap" Lajoie:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nap_Lajoie

He still holds the AL record batting average for one season - .426!
