Report: Miami PED lists revealed

ESPN.com news services

New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez has hired an attorney and is denying involvement after his name -- along with those of other baseball players such as Melky Cabrera, Nelson Cruz and Gio Gonzalez -- appeared on lists obtained by Miami New Times from an anti-aging clinic in Miami that allegedly dispensed performance-enhancing drugs.
The names were on records Miami New Times said were given to it by an employee who worked at Biogenesis of America before it closed last month. Miami New Times reported that the records show the firm sold performance-enhancing drugs, including human growth hormone, testosterone and anabolic steroids.Anthony Bosch, the 49-year-old head of the clinic, was connected to Manny Ramirez when the former MLB star was suspended for 50 games for violating baseball's drug policy in 2009. Bosch has never been charged by local or federal officials.Olney: Yanks done with A-Rod?

Alex Rodriguez has admitted to PED use from 2001-03, but he's now stuck in another drug controversy, writes Buster Olney. Blog
Durrett: Rangers' options

Miami New Times said it conducted a three-month investigation before releasing its 5,400-word story online on Tuesday.
Saturday, ESPN's "Outside The Lines" reported that Major League Baseball was investigating multiple wellness clinics in South Florida, as well as individuals with potential ties to players. The report said that the area from Boca Raton to Miami is "ground zero" for performance-enhancing drugs still filtering into the game.
Rodriguez, who ended 2012 injured and on the bench during the playoffs, has admitted to using steroids from 2001 to '03, but he has said he has not used PEDs since. The New Times report said that Rodriguez's name shows up 16 times in the records it reviewed. One record, which the newspaper reported was part of Bosch's private notebooks, indicated Rodriguez paid Bosch $3,500 for "1.5/1.5 HGH (sports perf.), creams test., glut., MIC, supplement, sports perf. Diet." HGH is banned by MLB.
There are other notations for Rodriguez as well, beginning in 2009 and continuing through last season. The New Times report states that other drugs listed for Rodriguez include IGF-1, a banned substance that stimulates insulin production and muscle growth, GHRP, a substance that releases growth hormones, and testosterone creams. According to the report, Bosch openly bragged of supplying drugs to Rodriguez.
Rodriguez had hip surgery last month and is expected to miss some or all of the 2013 season.

Rodriguez has hired Miami-based lawyer Roy Black to represent him in the matter. Black was part of the team that got William Kennedy Smith acquitted of rape charges in 1991 and has represented other celebrities.
The public relations firm Sitrick and Company issued a statement on behalf of Rodriguez on Tuesday.
"The news report about a purported relationship between Alex Rodriguez and Anthony Bosch are not true," the statement says. "Alex Rodriguez was not Mr. Bosch's patient, he was never treated by him and he was never advised by him. The purported documents referenced in the story -- at least as they relate to Alex Rodriguez -- are not legitimate."
The Yankees also issued a statement Tuesday, saying: "We fully support the Commissioner's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. This matter is now in the hands of the Commissioner's Office. We will have no further comment until that investigation has concluded."
Miami New Times reported that Cabrera, who signed a $16 million free-agent contract with the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason, is mentioned 14 times in the report. He was suspended in August 2012 for violating baseball's performance-enhancing drugs policy while a member of the San Francisco Giants. The paper cited entries in April 2012 indicating Cabrera "has enough meds until May 4" and indicating what the paper terms a "cocktail of drugs including IGF-1."
Major League Baseball issued a lengthy statement Tuesday in response to the New Times story.
"We are always extremely disappointed to learn of potential links between players and the use of performance-enhancing substances," the statement begins. "These developments, however, provide evidence of the comprehensive nature of our anti-drug efforts. Through our Department of Investigations, we have been actively involved in the issues in South Florida. It is also important to note that three of the players allegedly involved have already been disciplined under the Joint Drug Program."
The statement added that MLB has implemented many recommendations of the Mitchell report and feels that its Department of Investigations in conjunction with local and federal law enforcement has made great strides in policing the game.
Before adding that the investigation is ongoing and the league won't comment further, the statement did say: "We remain fully committed to following all leads and seeking the appropriate outcomes for all those who use, purchase and are involved in the distribution of banned substances, which have no place in our game."
Cruz, the Texas Rangers right fielder who hit 24 home runs in 2012, has not been disciplined for PED use by the league; however, he is listed on a July 2012 record, with a notation from Bosch that "need to call him, go Thur. to Texas, take meds from April 5-May 5, will owe him troches and&and will infuse them in May." Troches, according to Bosch's notes, are a type of drug lozenge which Miami New Times said includes testosterone. The Rangers issued a statement Tuesday, saying: "The Texas Rangers were contacted late last week by Miami New Times regarding the story posted this morning. At that time, the Rangers contacted Major League Baseball on that inquiry. The team has no further comment."
Gonzalez, the Washington Nationals left-hander who led the league with 21 wins last season and was third in Cy Young voting, appears five times, including one charge for $1,000.
His father, Max Gonzalez, also appears, but he told Miami New Times that he was there to lose weight and that his son is "as clean as apple pie."
"And if I knew he was doing these things with steroids, do you think I'd be dumb enough to go there?" Max Gonzalez said, according to Miami New Times.
Gio Gonzalez issued a statement Tuesday that appeared in the Washington Times.
"I've never used performance-enhancing drugs of any kind, and I never will," the statement says. "I've never met or spoken with Tony Bosch or used any substances provided by him. Anything said to the contrary is a lie."
Pitcher Bartolo Colon was suspended last season for violating baseball's performance-enhancing drug rules. Bosch, in his notes, says Colon's monthly fee was $3,000, according to Miami New Times.
Other names listed in the records obtained by Miami New Times include Cesar Carrillo, a former University of Miami pitcher, Jimmy Goins, the strength and conditioning coach at Miami for nine seasons, Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa and professional tennis player Wayne Odesnik, who was banned from tennis for two years in 2010 for allegedly trying to bring HGH into Australia.
Miami New Times reported that it sent detailed letters to all of the people to be named in its story asking for comment, but none responded. On Sunday, Bosch told New Times: "I can't really say anything to you," and added that his attorney would be in touch.
According to the report, the former secretary for Biogenesis said there shouldn't be any question as to what athletes were looking for from Bosch.
"He sold HGH and steroids," the person said, according to the New Times. "Everyone who worked there knew that was what our business was."

So this mean the Yanks can void Arods contract? This is good news for the Empire, No?
If they can pull it off, it will be excellent news for the Evil Empire. While there's not much way they can get around sucking in 2013, having an extra $25 M to spend in 2014 can go a long way toward getting them back in contention. You can bet the union will fight any attempt by the Yanks to void his contract.

I'm waiting, now, for Joe.T to tell me just how tainted was the Yankees 2009 title, considering that two of their regulars, Rodriguez and Cabrera, were juicing it up big time. Joe? Joe? You there, Joe?

I'll bite....

If you really believe the Yanks will suck this coming season rumpiepoo, you dont know baseball half as good as YOU think YOU do. :eyebrows: Pitching is key and the Yanks are loaded in that department from starters to the bullpen not to mention they are saying Pineda could be back to 100% by may or june. Hitting will be fine as usual, maybe not be setting another HR record but overall the Yanks will score lots of runs. The outfield corner to corner D will be better than it has been in a long time with a helathy Gardiner, Granderson and Ichiro.

Not many "if's" on the Yanks, but plenty on the red sox. "If Lester can come back to form" "If buckholz can pitch a full season w/o back problems" "If Lackie can pitch like he did with the Angels" "If the new guys signed to crazy $ contracts can even come close to living up to them" "if david ortiz is not seriously slowed dopwn from PED's and old age" IF IF IF's all over that club coming into spring training and beyond.

Now the Yanks.... Outfield looks great, hitting and defense, nice mix of power, speed, avg, good and a great arm and ground covered. Infield D is strong on the hot corner and at first, about as good as it gets there, same at 2b. Jeter is already taking grounders and hitting and will be consistent, not at all worried about the Captain. Cano is Cano and on a contract year, look out! Catching is the only offensive weakness that stands out, but then again as long as Cervelli and whomever else calls a good game and plays good defense, thats fine with me. Tex and Youk will hit as will everyone else, there is just too much talent there not to. If all that is sucking rumps, then sorry my friend, you really havnt a clue about the game any longer.

We were getting along so well in the "Official" sports threads the last week or so ;) so debate nicely my friend

Really? I knew rumps would finally come around! Did he pm this to you merlot? Rumps, for the record could you please post this in your own words, lol....

As far as Arod goes merlot, why would any Yanks fan not be happy to void that contract for what he has not been giving us the last year or so and how it looks like he wont be giving us much in the future? He was a great player for years and is now a shell of his former self, so why should i or any Yanks fan not be happy if we can void that contract? (not that it will be easy and likely never happen) It opens the door for the Yanks to go after other players to keep a contender on the field for years to come, wouldnt you be happy if he was a red sox and you could possibly void that contract? Of course you would, it has nothing to do with playing both sides of the fence, he was a great Yankee, but does not look like he will ever get back to even respectable #'s.... time to move on, it happens.

Rumps, Joe and Iggy have already given the World Series to the Yanks for 2013.

How were you right merlot? Arod was great for the first 4 years of the contract ext, like everyone father time catches up with you, so i would not say you were right, he got hurt and is getting older, it happens.... The Yanks signed him long term to assure another Yankee goes into the HOF, it was quite simple. Seemsyou and your crew also said Jeter was done 2 years ago and not worth that new contract, what happened there :noidea: (he has been worth every penny and more) when you are guessing you are gonna be right once in a while buddy, not everyone can predict like Mr.T...... Speaking of predictions, I believe it was yours truly who predicted a 4th place finish for the red sox last year, man i was feeling last place to but i do believe i said fourth in my preseason predictions last season, i screwed that one up lol.......

This season:

1. Blue Jays
2.Yankees
3.Rays
4/5.Red Sox
4/5.Orioles

Last 2 teams will be seperated by only 1/2-2 games.

Pitching is key and the Yanks are loaded in that department..
Loaded??
Sabathia, 33, coming off knee surgery. Still an ace, though risky.
Pettitte, 52, coming off a broken ankle
Kuroda, 46, looking good.
Hughes, 26, MLB average, year after year
Nova, 25, Nada. Minor leaguer.

Actually, I think Hughes will step up this year and be much better than Pettitte. However, this team will have big trouble scoring runs, running out injury risks at 1b, SS, 3b, and CF. No catcher. No DH. No bench...none. 125 HRs have left the roster and have been replaced by Kevin Youkilis. 77 wins.

Sox. 83-85 wins barring a trade to improve.

Whats new :noidea: what do the experts know?

Yanks will score tons of runs, as usual, just not as many via the long ball as they are used to. The Yanks 1-4 starters are top ten in all of MLB and hoping Nova and Phelps have more time learning on the job from the master, Rivera and will improve over last year. Phelps looks like the real freakin deal boys and girls. Pineda by may/june is the ace in the hole.
Sorry rumps, but the experts don't quite see it your way

Let me just say that anyone who thinks that a rotation headed by a 300 lb. 32 year old coming off knee surgery, a 41 year old, and a 38 year old is going to get through the season healthy has clearly not been following baseball very long.

Yankees score a ton of runs??? With what offense? Teixeira? LOL Jeter? LOL. Youkilis? LOL. Ichiro? LOL. Cervelli? LOL. Nunez? LOL. The Yankees have a three man offense: Granderson, Gardner, and Cano. Good fucking luck.

Whats new :noidea: what do the experts know?.
Experts? Which experts?? You mean like Mika Axisa, the lead writer at the Yankee blog River St. Blues? Here's what he has to say about the current dismal state of the Yankees:

"Yankees' core value: D+. The Yankees have little (no?) impact talent on the right side of 30 on their big league roster beyond 27-year-old setup man David Robertson, and their top prospects are at least one year away from the show. That's creates a rather grim picture for the immediate future. Add in ownership's very public desire to get under the $189 million luxury tax threshold by 2014, and New York appears to have run into the perfect storm that, at some point in the next few years, could see them miss the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time in nearly two decades."

Rodriguez 18 hr, replacement Kevin Youkilis.
Russell Martin 21 hr, replacement none
Raul Ibanez 19 hr, replacement Gardner, maybe 5
Nick Swisher 24 hr, replacement Ichiro, maybe 6
Eric Chavez 16 hr, replacement none
Andruw Jones 14 hr, replacement none

Sure they're gonna score a lot of runs, sure.

Good enuf to make the playoffs, unlike a team you root for lol. Oui, rumps, the Yanks have another good team heading into 2013, deal with it. You can have your $13 mil players who are grossly overpaid and AVERAGE players at best. btw, did you even sign that hack catcher yet who will try to play first??? Napoli....

OMG

I am right, according to you totally right that he would not be worth his contract for 10 years. He didn't even make it for 5 years...less than half of the contract. Do you actually understand what you write? Or do you just jump to either side of the fence so much you can't understand how you contradict yourself all the time.

You basically say you got 4 good years of this contract and the last 6 years he has been and will be so bad that you and all Yankee fans are dying to get rid of him. That's as big of an indictment and admission of the failure of signing him to 10 years as it gets...in your own words. As for getting older that's pure BS. By that standard Jeter, Rivera, Pettitte and other Yankees should be just as bad. So the age theory is another phoney excuse for a guy now paying the price for what is coming out as a career of roid use.

The Yanks signed him long term to assure another Yankee goes into the HOF, ...

Considering the situation this is as absurd and dumb as it gets. If the new allegations are true A-Rod will go down as the biggest cheater and most expensive ripoff of all time. It's becoming evident A-Rod took advantage of poor PED accountability when the ability to cover roid use was rampant and schemed to play the system for his entire career. He would be a huge stain in the Hall of Fame no matter what team he played for. Why would the Yankees want their brand embedded next to A-Rod's shame...and that if he ever gets in if the second incident proves true.

The word on possible A-Rod outcomes is he may be seeking a credible physician who will declare a career ending injury as soon as possible thus robbing the Yankees of about $125 million dollars for 5 years of absolutely nothing.

 Yankees,

"As far as Arod goes merlot,...He was a great player for years and is now a shell of his former self, so why should i or any Yanks fan not be happy if we can void that contract?," says iggy.

Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. Rodriguez signed the extension after the 2007 season. He was good, perhaps very good, but quite a bit short of great for two seasons, 2008 and 2009, when he put up OPS of .965 and .963. Nobody but iggy would consider those number great, if, in fact, he had any idea of what OPS is. Since then he has not even reached .850.

As for the Yankees getting out of the contract, it simply isn't happening. The players' union is just too strong. Good article today by Jay Jaffe. As for the Yankees finding a doctor to say that he's no longer capable of fulfilling his contract, there's a little issue called insurance fraud, which just happens to be a felony.

As usual rumps you are dead wrong(I did say as usual, so you can be excused for your sillyness), baseball writer/analyst/expert Matthew Leach from MLB.com who is paid big bucks to give his opinion on the sport of baseball absolutely loves it and I tend to agree, that short porch in right field is made for Hafner.

Thanks for posting that Mr.T and i totally agree he would be a great fit for 200-300 ab's and that rf porch would look very small to a guy with Hafner's power. Good stuff amigo, Cashman always seems to find the perfect role players and this would be no different. :thumb:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/b...ank-dream-deflated-disgrace-article-1.1251849

Nearly nine years after the Yankees made a trade for Alex Rodriguez that was going to start winning them World Series the way they won them after Joe Torre got to town, the Yankees want Rodriguez to disappear the way the old Stadium has. This is no longer just about the stupid money they paid him and the money they still owe him. They just want him gone. The Yankees look at a guy who people once thought might end up the greatest player of all time as their Eddy Curry. Not overweight the way Curry was. Just dead weight.

It is still early in the game with Rodriguez, you have to know that. Of course the Yankees want him to decide, when and if he recovers from hip surgery, that he is nothing more than a shell of the player he once was, either retire at that point, so they can score insurance money off him, or decide to settle with the Yankees so they can release him once and for all.

Or — this appears to be even more of a longshot — they want the commissioner of baseball, Bud Selig, to hit him with a drug suspension so they can start exploring ways to void his contract, even though the Major League Baseball Players Association will fight to protect guaranteed money in baseball the way gun nuts protect their guns.

But if none of that happens, then what? They keep Rodriguez around as a $114 million scrub? He stays in a Yankee uniform and permanently becomes the part-time player he became in the postseason of 2012, the organization treating him the same way Joe Girardi did?

All we know right now, as Rodriguez is reported to be the star of the Miami New Times’ list of “patients” being treated by a “biochemist” named Anthony Bosch at what is laughingly called an anti-aging clinic, is that a player who was supposed to be on his way to Monument Park when the Yankees traded for him in the middle of February in 2004 has now become a monument to everything performance-enhancing drugs have done to star baseball players who thought they were smarter than everybody else. Who ended up proving once and for all that they don’t call it dope for nothing.

But even with the money they have all made as juicers, there is still a bill that is finally presented to all those looking for the best and newest drugs. That bill is being presented to Rodriguez right now.

This is how you punch a ticket to Lance Armstrong-ville. To the end, Armstrong was telling Oprah and the world that he used drugs in the old days, but hasn’t used them lately. Rodriguez is now denying he belongs on Bosch’s list. As he does, the Yankees hope against hope that he will just go away, knowing full well that he might not. There is no way of knowing how this plays out, no way of knowing if Rodriguez will be content to cash checks — for five more years — as a part-time DH and pinch-hitter and full-time Eddy Curry payroll albatross.

Think about where they are with Alex Rodriguez now and where they were when they made the trade for him in 2004 because Aaron Boone, the hero of Game 7 of the 2003 American League Championship Series, ripped up his knee in an offseason basketball game and the Yankees found themselves needing a third baseman, and fast. A-Rod, who had always been a shortstop, agreed to make the switch from short to third. And the rest of baseball decided that the 2004 Yankees were going to be the ’27 Yankees all over again, or the ’98 Yankees.

This is what they were saying in the middle of February that year:

“I really cannot describe how happy I am to have been able to acquire a player of the caliber of Alex Rodriguez,” Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. “It was perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am ecstatic that a lot of hard work enabled us to consummate a deal of this magnitude.”

“This is a great day for the New York Yankees and for the City of New York,” George M. Steinbrenner said. “In acquiring Alex Rodriguez, we are bringing to New York one of the premier players in the history of the game.”

“It’s tough to come up with the words to describe how you feel when a player of Alex’s ability and class is so suddenly in your lineup,” Joe Torre said. “I know that the fans of New York are going to love having him here on an everyday basis. I couldn’t be happier.”

Just dead weight

$114 million scrub

monument to everything performance-enhancing drugs

hope that he will just go away

payroll albatross

’27 Yankees all over again

caliber of Alex Rodriguez

great day for the New York Yankees

Alex’s ability and class
