What you have to admire about this woman is how she used her intelligence and strategy to back up her skill.
Her first run, out of 3, was very difficult and she landed it perfectly putting her in first place among the top 12. Her second jump was a little safer that still got her high marks, but placed her in third place.
When she came up for her third and final run , she was in third place and guaranteed at least a bronze no matter what. What she wanted was gold though. So she went for a difficult routine that she has never tried on snow and that was only landed by 2 others in competition. Her jump and landing were perfection and a gold medal win , The youngest woman to do so in freestyle at the Olympics.

So at 18 she is entering an Ivy League university following in her father`s (Harvard) and grandmother`s path. She had an almost perfect SAT score (1580). Is an accomplished pianist. Speaks perfect Mandarin. A sought after model . On the cover of Vogue. And for my taste the prettiest athlete at these Olympics.

Gu will become world famous and very rich, but she will be also cursed and hated by many Americans for her decision to switch flags. I understand and would probably feel a little bitter if she had done it as a Canadian.
But I also understand her motivation, especially when she made that decision as a 16 year old when the world and China were perceived far differently than now.

Cloudsurf,

She is skiing for China for one reason, and it's financial. She has made prodigious money off the decision and exploited a market in which she knew she would be far more marketable. Good for her but nobody here is that naive to not understand that money guides these decisions, not dated notions of nationalism.

It`s been a dismal time in Beijing for for the US so far. By this time they should be in the top 3 instead they are tenth with only 1 gold.
The diplomatic boycott didn`t help...if anything it isolated the athletes even more then they already are by covid.
China like Russia will not bow to diplomatic pressure or even world opinion.
The American public are disappointed and Republicans will blame Biden while some Democrats will blame Trump .
So is the sad state of affairs. (dis) united they sadly stumble like like Shiffrin.
Canada is doing just as bad. Some blame the truckers and others Trudeau .Sad

BTW I`m not normally a conspiracy theorist but in the case of the Shiffrin errors I am.
Its highly unusual that she would disqualify from her 2 best events when she was so dominant in the past few years. . Somebody didn`t want her to win and they tampered with her equipment, especially her ski wax.

Americans aren’t watching the Olympics because we have no interest in it.

Cloudsurf they are using man made snow on those slopes which creates an odd surface texture for experienced skiers. This isn't a normal World Cup venue so none of the skiers are used to these slopes and the surface, they are used to skiing on real mountain snow in Europe. Did you take note of the fact the gold in one of these events went to an older Swedish skier who had only won one World Cup event? The downhill event will be interesting and highly dangerous.

Beav you are right and I`m aware of the artificial snow conditions.
I`m comparing her performance to other skiers .....most of whom didn`t fault out.
The wax they use , especially under harsh conditions is a key to success.

Have you seen or heard about her coach.
She is an attractive blond who looks to be around 35. Her training methods are something else though.
Other coaches call her methods cruel and damaging. While she churns out young superstars, she does it by working them to exhaustion.
She finds young talented girls and then trains them like a slave master would.

By 15 they are superstars doing quads and winning gold medals ,but by 18 they are washed out cripples. Two of her girls didn`t make the team because they had broken bones, while another 2 were too ill to make the trip. I`m not surprised that someone like her would try any substance even banned ones, to enhance her teams performance.

The American goalie is 19 years old- youngest US goalie to ever start an Olympics game and he seems to be one of their main man players as is the kid that the Habs drafted who scored 5 points last game against China. I forget his name but he is a 2020 Habs draft pick and seems to be the main man offensive player for Team USA
