Imagine for a moment that you are the head of a large respected multinational business organization and you are interviewing canditates for the position of Vice President of Finance. You've narrowed the field down to two individuals, but when you balance out their respective strengths and weaknesses, neither candidate has an obvious advantage. Both are in their mid-forties and have families. You have become aware however that one of the candidates is a long-time hobbyist that regularly employs the services of escorts. He also visits strip clubs at least a couple times a month.

All else being equal, do you hire the hobbyist or the non-hobbyist?

Both are in their mid-forties and have families. There is only one significant distinguishing factor between them. If both are equal in every way than I'll hire the non-hobbiest, because both have families as mentioned. This means that the hobbiest is cheating on his partner and if he does not have the morailty to remail loyal than I can not trust his character.

Ok, I would say first it doesn't make any difference.
He qualifies so it's all good. :)

Then if I want to think business wise ...
Because he is an hobbiest, he will need more and more money,
so will work more and more ...

As for my funny side of mine ...
At least he may not disturb the secretary ! :D

Cheers !

Obviously hire the hobbyist. He'll be able to hook you up on the next business trip to Montreal.

BTW How the heck did my resume get to your desk?

I would say that your opinion on this matter is probably quite in line with mainstream opinion. I'm not sure that as it employee it would be this that would worry me the most. Instead, I would be more concerned by the extra element of risk that hiring the hobbiest poses. First, there is the risk of lost company prestige and reputation. Second, hobbying has the potential to be addictive, and even if the candidate isn't addicted now it doesn't mean he won't in the future. And once he does, like any addict, he will start looking to "non-conventional" sources of funds to feed his addiction. Then we have to consider the psychological aspect. Business thrives on stability, but the candidate will probably have a less stable marriage and a greater likelihood of divorce.

As much as I hate to say it, the hobbiest presents a lot of potential risks.

From another perspective...

Would you hire a secretary who escorted to pay for her education over another applicant who was was funded by her parents?

You make some interesting points in post #10. Also it would make no differance for me, but the family part made my mind. If both were single than I see no difference, but when I think of family, I think of a wife and children. For me once kids are involved than there is a loyalty factor in there and a question of the type of character who would hobby behind the backs of their wife and children.

From a business prospective, it's better to hire the non-hobbiest as most businesses needs to keep their image in mind and family orented businesses wins almost every time. It shouldn't, but it does.

If the interviewer saw the applicant at merb GT then it may not be good idea to hire him. I believe in keeping personal life and professional life seperate. I try to limit the number of people who know about my hobbies.

hobbyest or hobbiest?

LOM said:
For such an important position, I`d hire whichever one can spell ``hobbyist.``

Of course you are correct. Hobbyist is the correct usage, since it is a noun and not a superlative adjective.

I`ve often wondered however if the trend toward the use of ``hobbiest`` isn`t an attempt to recognize the separate derivation of the term as we use it here on Merb; that is, in allusion to the exchange of money for sexual services. Hobby, when referring to stamp-collecting and other pastimes, is derived from the Old English term ``hobyn,`` which means a small horse; hence the word ``hobby-horse.`` Hobyn, or hobi, is in turn derived from the Sanskrit word ``vyasana,``[1] which means to move back and forth with regular rhythm. In view of the libidinal preoccupations of Merb`s members, it might seem that this is also the correct derivation of the word ``hobby`` as we use it here.

However, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests ``hobby`` as used on Merb is in reality a completely distinct word that is derived from the Sanskrit word ``bahubhogyA``, the definition of which is ``to be enjoyed by many; to be shared gracefully; companion; prostitute.``[2] In Sanskrit, ``bahubhogyA`` takes an i-stem when used as a noun (hence, bahubhogi). Some linguists contend therefore that the use of ``hobbiest`` when referring to a person who employs the services of escorts, while not in keeping with standard English usage, is actually preferable from an etymological standpoint.[3]

For the time being, our use of the word ``hobbiest`` will be clearly understood if we place ``mb`` (for ``merb``) in brackets after the word. For example, ``My wife is angry that I am a hobbiest[mb]`` or ``The hobbiest[mb] sat in his room waiting for his date.`` This will alert the reader that the activity being referred to is the exchange of money for sexual services as opposed to stamp-collecting or painting by numbers.

I expect that eventually the use of both ``hobbyist`` and ``hobbiest`` to refer to our specific pastime will fall out of favour and we will simply refer to ourselves as ``bahubhogists.``

Hum... And what if the guy hobbies exactly because he loves his kids and is taking upon himself to not break the mariage just yet, hoping it will be less destructive on the kids to break up once they're older and better able to understand what's going on? Who knows what's in a hobbyist mind. Even us, sometimes we don't know! LOL

The day you'll meet the woman of your life, I have no doubt that you'll "have the morality" to warn her of your affection for street walkers and MP's.
