Congratulations to the current 2013-2014 NHL Scoring Leader

Mikhail Grabovski: 3 goals, 1 assist. Wouldn't any team want a guy like that?

Prust pretty much, which wont help much. The habs are right back to how they were last year now. They got Parros because Prust had to carry the tough guy load all by himself.

This may have been addressed previously but why the fuck did the NHL make the conferences uneven, it's probably the most asinine unfair change I've seen. So the Eastern Conference has 16 teams fighting to make the 8 playoff spots while the Western Conference has 14 teams and 8 make the playoffs. Utterly fucken ridiculous in my eyes.

Can you guys also explain to me why the Bruins traded Tyler Seguin?

What was leaked out by the team was that it was implied he was an out-of-control party animal & wasn't focused on hockey as much as they wanted to, considering they had just given him a big contract and he wasn't producing. I suspect they believe he has a drinking problem, and rumours that he spent 3 days in the same clothes during last season's playoffs might also be true.

However, i suspect there is more to the story which still hasn't been leaked out. I'm sure some of the Boston writers know the truth, but they chosen to remain silent for the time being.

For Seguin, the Bruins got a pretty good player in Louie Ericksson.

So I guess the Leafs think this guy Reimer is pretty good in goal? Would they trade him straight up for Carey Price or no?

Reimer is a pretty good goalie, and so is Jonathan Bernier. Right now, the Leafs have two #1 goalies.

Reimer makes a fraction of what Carey Price is paid. No, the Leafs would likely not trade him straight up for Price, one reason being that they can't afford Carey Price's contract right now. The Leafs are capped out. And even if they weren't, i'm not sure they'd be willing to trade any of their two goalies for Carey Price. Carey Price hasn't done anything in 2 years. He keeps on letting in bad goals & his performances have suffered year after year. Will he ever achieve the star potential it was expected of him when he was drafted high in the first round by the habs? Who knows. The jury is still out on Carey Price & that's why they fired his goalie coach last season & hired the former Chicago Blackhawks goalie coach.

I disagree. I think it's a GREAT deal for Phil but a very poor one for Toronto. Too much money and too many years. I will post other observations in another hockey thread on this board.

I disagree. The Leafs had no choice but to give him that kind of money because he was going to walk away for nothing at the end of next season if he didn't get his wish. Considering that Carolina gave the underachieving Alexander Semin $35/5 years, the Leafs knew that Kessel would be expensive. But Kessel likely could have got more had he chosen to go on the free market next season. And considering what Minnesota is paying Zac Parise, the Leafs are actually getting a bargain.

p.s. Note that Phil Kessel is a superstar & has been a top 10 points and goal scorer over the past 2 seasons. And he just turned 26 today. He's just entering his prime & will be a force for years to come. Also consider the fact the Leafs were only able to re-sign some players because of Kessel's presence in Toronto.

Exactly. Some insiders were saying Kessel, if he has another ppg or better season this year would of got offers for 8.5mil or more for 7 years from many teams next summer.

Nice game by Toronto tonight, Bernier was simply awesome.

I've always been a big fan of Grabo. I wasn't a happy camper when i learned the Leafs bought him out (via amnesty buyout). I always said from day 1 that they should have bought out John-Michael Liles instead since it was obvious that Randy Carlyle never liked him & would never give him a chance in Toronto. Carlyle wasn't much of a Grabo fan either. So maybe they should have amnestied both and keep Komisarek since he only had 1 year left on his contract. Or....amnesty both and buyout Komisarek.

The bottom line is that Grabovski will get more opportunities in Washington that he likely never would have in a Randy Carlyle system. That's what hockey is all about and why ordinary/under-performing players who get traded suddenly find their 'game' again and thrive with their new teams. New team, new players, new coach, new system. Hockey 101.

I watched the third period with a habs fan & when the Leafs won the game, he blurted out "OMG!! The Leafs are gonna win the Cup!!"

I told him to relax and that there were still over 80 games left to play. ;)

He's just entering his prime & will be a force for years to come. Also consider the fact the Leafs were only able to re-sign some players because of Kessel's presence in Toronto.

1. I would not call Kessel a superstar. I'd very grudgingly concede "star" (at the very lowest level of that designation) but definitely NOT "superstar". I would reserve "superstar" (active players only) for the likes of Crosby, Ovechkin, Datsyuk, Malkin, Brodeur (more for his BODY of work over two decades than for his CURRENT work), Stamkos, and St. Louis. Once you get past that ELITE group, you have many "stars" such as Zetterberg, Alfredsson, Iginla, Toews, Kane, Giroux, Quick, etc....but if you start calling too many people "superstars" the term becomes meaningless. Phil is a decent offensive player but he's never even had a 40 goal season and he's well below a point a game for his career. Decent speed, decent shot but far too reluctant to pay the price and get his hands dirty. Also, as a defensive player, let's just say that guys like Datsyuk and Bergeron will never have to worry about him being competition for the Selke! He doesn't hit, he doesn't block shots, and he sure as hell doesn't fight (we're not counting stickwork!). So what we have is a one-dimensional player who's a little - but not a lot - above average in basic offensive skills. All in all, I think even calling him a "star" might be generous.

2. You say that "the Leafs were only able to re-sign some players because of Kessel's presence...." but (first) that doesn't make much difference since players are looking out for number one and go where they can get security and $$$$ (or in the case of veterans like Alfie or Iginla to a place where they think they can finally win a Cup) and (second) the Leafs will NOT be able to re-sign some players BECAUSE Phil's contract is eating up so much cap space. Also, the fact that Carolina gave a ridiculous contract to Semin doesn't mean that the Leafs had to give a ridiculous contract to Kessel.

So true Doc, and after this season he should have well over 200 goals scored at only 26 years of age. He does not even play with a true #1 center, just imagine if he played alongside Crosby lol. He makes others around him better and has a 2way game now thanks to Carlyle. His playmaking is as good as his scoring ability. Superstar? Close, very close. Star? absolutely.

Note that Phil Kessel is a superstar & has been a top 10 points and goal scorer over the past 2 seasons. And he just turned 26 today. He's just entering his prime & will be a force for years to come. Where I belong.
Phil is a decent offensive player but he's never even had a 40 goal season and he's well below a point a game for his career.
He's actually had exactly 1 season, er 1 half season, over a point a game. And the last time this +/- was positive, he was wearing a Bruins jersey.

In today's defensive minded NHL you are a great player if you have put up a point a game or better. There are guys who average less than a point a game and are nevertheless great players because they play both ways, like Datysuk.

I suppose that the +/- stat reflects on how well a player plays on both sides of the ice, though I suspect that it might be a flawed stat, totally team dependent rather than individual, much like wins or RBI in baseball. I'd be curious to hear what Joel has to say about it.
