What position does "Suppan" play? Is he new? Btw Jagr is a physical specimen and what he is doing at his age is rare, very rare. Markov is no Jagr. I would love to see what Markov has left at 42. When Jagr was markovs age he only put up 96 points with the Rangers.

I don't know why I have to explain it to you but I am not surprised. I said that Suppan will be a Hab.

Secondly, Jagr was mentioned because of EB's remark that hockey is a young man's game.

Suppan, by the way, plays defence.

As the Doc sees it.....

-Jaromir Jagr is indeed a specimen. I attribute his longetivity to spending a few years in the KHL a few years ago. It gave him the chance to rest his body from the grind of an NHL schedule. I doubt he'd still be playing had he remained in the NHL for his entire career.

-The Canadiens overpaid for Markov, but they didn't much of a choice. They have an extremely miserable defence & they had to find a way to keep Markov. He wanted 4 years with a raise, they wanted to keep him for two. Rumours are they tried to lowball him a few weeks ago with a one-year offer. I doubt if it's true, even though that was the word going around the Mtl media at the time. I prefer my own sources than these ninkenpoops. So they found common ground and gave him 3 years for the same amount they were already paying him. It's a gamble on the Canadiens' part, but one they had to make.

-I doubt they'll be able to re-sign Subban before July 1st. He's in the driver's seat and knows it. He also plans on making the most of this opportunity and will allow teams to talk to his agent (Don Meehan, the best in the biz) and possibly offer him a contract. I expect he'd only sign an offer sheet if the amount of money is out of this world, similar to what the Flyers offered Shea Webber two years ago ($14 milllion per season). Nashville matched that ridiculous amount feeling it had no choice, but they missed the playoffs this season & i believe a large part of the blame for this was that they gave Webber way too large of a share of their team budget instead of sharing the money around & possibly sign a couple of other valuable players instead.

-I wonder if they'll re-sign Gionta. My guess is that at his age, he'd want to stay in Mtl. But if he goes, i see him signing with possibly the Devils or the Rangers. If the habs try to lowball him, he might get pissed off and sign somewhere else for more money. Then the habs may regret this move or have to up the ante, which means it'll be hard to sign other free agents & even P.K. Subban, whom i'm guessing won't accept anything lower than $10 million per season if he has to sign for long-term. He's not worth it, but he's aware some teams are willing to give him what he wants. He'd love to play in Toronto, but the Leafs are capped out unless they can find a way to unload some cap money (e.g Dion Phaneuf).

-Scott Hartnell was traded to the Jackets today. The Philly fans are very upset at this trade. Funny, but Hartnell would have fitted right in with the Canadiens.

-Gerard Gallant was now Florida's new coach. How much will he departure affect the team's psyche?? Many insiders attributed the team's success solely to Gallant. Any idea who may replace him?

-And finally, congratulations to the late Pat Burns for finally being elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Well overdue!!

here's the deal, Markov makes his partners better, Komisarek got a big contract out of the Leaf's because Markov made him look way better than he obviously was. This is a good plan for Habs, with budding young defense coming up and a old vet to teach them the ropes. Markov has been underrated for years, check Habs record with him out of line up.

17th in scoring amongst defencemen. Phaneuf was 45th. Markov is a career Hab, he is a leader, and when his contract is done, Subban will be a veteran leading Beaulieu, Tinordi, Pateryn, and Emelin. Another wise move by MB. Go Habs Go!

I'll take Markov at $5.75m over Phaneuf at $7m any day of the week and twice on Sundays!!!

As usual GHG you make good points.

The deal is slightly pricy (not Carey!) but that's the name of the game in today's NHL and at least it's only 3 years, unlike the ridiculous multiyear contracts the Leafs have handed out to liabilities such as Phaneuf and Clarkson. We'll be charitable and not mention Kessel, Komi and so many others.

It's a far, FAR better deal than the ridiculous contract Nonis gave to Phaneuf, who is considered by NHL players themselves to be the most overrated player in the NHL, which appears to have been proven yet AGAIN this past season as this "captain" led his team to yet another typical Leaf collapse - losing 12 of the final 14 games of the season and once AGAIN failing to make the playoffs.

ROFL! Is this suPPan a new guy on the canadien defense? It will take likely at least 8mil per season to sign suBBan but I for one would love to see Philly come in with a $14mil per offer sheet to try to steal him away like they tried with Weber. Would the canadien match or take the 4 first round picks instead?

Hey, you mentioned Jagr and I just made an obvious non comparison between he and markov.

Hall of Fame - the next batch to be inducted:

Dominik Hasek - one of the most automatic selections in history for one of the best goalies of all time

Peter Forsberg - another automatic - a great, great player - not only superskilled but also one of the gutsiest players who ever lived

Mike Modano - how can you exclude the highest scoring American who ever played?

Rob Blake - very very good player...but a borderline Hall of Famer: file with Shutt, Federko and Gillies

Pat Burns - if he's worthy - and I think he is - why didn't they do it when the poor guy was alive? It's not as if his resumé has improved since then!

Bill McCreary - an automatic

Jagr is a rare physical specimen who has been durable through the years, like a Honda Accord. Markov has not been durable in recent years, he is breaking down more than a 1985 Yugo GV.

I wasn't comparing Markov with Jagr. Jagr was mentioned because of your remark that hockey is a young man's game.

Markov has had his injures just like other players. Since his knee injury, he has played two full seasons, though one shorted ( 48 games ).

At least half of the NHL would take him if he was a UFA.

35 is not old. There are probably 30% playing at that age. Comparing a player to a car makes no logical sense to me.

For Markov, with his knees, that is really OLD.

And btw Ballamic, Doc was not nitpicking at all and neither was I, you did it TWICE for crying out loud! And the "P" and the "B" are nowhere close to each other on the keyboard lol....... its all good bro, we are just trying to help you get to know the team you love is all.

I am not sure about Gionta tho Doc, many canadien fans I know would love him to be gone but word has it bergervin loves him so???

Thank you for your cynical observation. I laughed so hard, I fell off my chair.

He may be 35 but he is a solid dman, plays 25 mins. a game and is the first defensive unit on the power play.

His last contract in 2011, he missed 65 games and the playoffs, and yet, Montreal sighed him to 3 year contract.

In 2014, he had 43 points in 81 games.

Here is a comparison, Dion Phaneuf had 31 points in 80 games at the young age of 29.

For the past 5 regular seasons here's his season rundown of games played.

2009-10: 45 of 82
2010-11: 7 of 82
2011-12: 13 of 82
2012-13: Shortened season 48 of 48 :)
2013-14: 81 of 82

Wouldn't say he's very reliable although the last two seasons he has been. Be interesting to see what kind of start he gets off to next season.

He'd love to play in Toronto

I agree wholeheartedly with Doc that that would have been an intelligent choice.

For a player, making the playoffs means 2 to 8 extra weeks of extremely intense work, iincreasing the risk of injury and decreasing the time to recuperate between seasons. Players are paid far less per game during the playoffs than during the regular season.

A player trying to maximize the length and earnings of his career should therefore try to sign with a team which rarely makes the playoffs and blatantly and spectacularly quits to get out quickly on the rare occasion that it does.
