There's a lot of talk about the habs these days on local sports talk shows. Who will be staying or going?
Here are my thoughts, and feel free to give yours:
-Brian Gionta's chances of staying are 50-50. He'd like to remain with the habs and not take much of a pay cut. The habs aren't sure they want him back. He's small & up there in age. His skills & goal scoring abilities have degraded. His main value to the team would be in a leadership role. They'd probably take him back for another year, but at a reduced salary. Chances of him returning: questionable.
-Francis Bouillon's chances of remaining with the team are also 50-50. He doesn't want to retire & would prefer staying put. The habs should consider re-signing him since he won't cost them much & he'll willingly sign for just one year. Bouillion's experience & leadership could be a key if they decide to keep Nathan Beaulier & Jared Tinordi. Chances of him returning: probable.
-Douglas Murray......bye-bye!
-Mike Weaver was one of the team's best defencemen down the stretch. Small in stature, he plays bigger & his experience would be a bonus on this team. The habs should try to re-sign him. Chances of him returning: questionable.
-George Parros......bye-bye.
-Andrei Markov would like to stay with the habs & end his career with the only team he's played for. However, he'd like to sign for at least 4 years and not take a pay cut. He may actually expect a raise. The habs, on the other hand, are rumoured to offer a maximum of 2 years. Bergeron, it was learned, tried to low-ball Markov with a one-year offer earlier (which included a raise), but Markov's camp didn't bite & took it as an insult, which most in the media agreed with. With the team not wanting to give him more than two years & Markov insisting on 4 years, who will bend first? Will someone bend? Will they settle on three years at the current numbers? Chances of Markov returning: questionable.
-Thomas Vanek.....bye-bye.
-P.K. Subban is expected to be back with the habs considering he'll be RFA & not UFA come July 1st. However, a team could step up & sign him to an offer sheet consisting of sick amounts of dollars, just like the Flyers did two years ago when they signed Shea Webber to a $14 million per year offer sheet, which Nashville chose to match. With the salary cap climbing to $70 million, will a team out there offer to sign Subban for an even bigger amount? If so, what should the habs do? Currently, the habs & Subban are at an impasse. Word is that the habs are now willing to offer Subban $8 million per year on a long-term contract. But Subban is quite aware that he's capable of being paid more elsewhere & wouldn't be playing in a market with the highest tax bracket in professional sports. Wouldn't he look good in a Rangers jersey? What about the aforementionned Philly Flyers, who desperately need help on defence? Or how about a team on the west coast like San Jose (if they can free up cap money)? Many teams would gladly pay the compensation required were they to sign Subban.....if the habs elect not to match, that is. But if the habs DO match an offer sheet, it very likely may mean no Markov & no high-priced free agent joining the ranks during the off-season since the contract Subban may sign for would be considered a cap killer in most markets.
It should be an interesting off-season, and rumours will start flying as soon as the current season ends, which may very well be tonight.
Your thoughts, please.
