How many top 5 picks has Edmonton had in the last 6-7 years and where did they end up again this season? (sorry Sol Tee) The problem with Edmonton is all their picks are smallish skilled guys and all offensive guys. They need to trade one or 2 of Hall (will never happen) Nuge, Eberle, Gagner or Yakupov for some D.

Edmonton has not addressed many problems over the past two decades. The problem in recent years is the lack of leadership (from both players & management alike), lack of veterans, poor defence, poor goaltending and average coaching. There is also zero team chemistry. Dallas Eakins has been a huge disappointment in his first season as a head coach & right now not a single NHL team would want to touch him should he get fired. Just a year ago, he was looked upon as the next big thing as far as coaches go in the league. What a difference a year makes!

Aside from a Crosby/Malkin/Stamkos/Ovechkin, drafting is a crap shoot after the top few prospects each year and this year the class is not spectactular. Next year, McDavid will be the Gem of the last decade.

That's quite true. After the top 5 picks in a draft year with a few phenoms, it's a big crap-shoot. The top 5 picks are usually automatic picks & the drafting order is usually predictable a week before the draft.

Agree about Bozak as well. He has become a very good player for $4 mil per. He is never likely going to be a true #1 center like Crosby, Malkin, Getzlaf or Thornton but those guys are rare and hard to find.

Doc, do the Leafs go after Paul Stastney this summer and trade Kadri?

Tim Leiweke has already been criticized by some in the Toronto media for hiring Shanhan as a way to appease the masses after the end of season debacle.

He might be a newbie when it comes down to running a front office, but knowing Shanahan and how competitive he was as a player, I'd be really surprised if he doesn't approach his new job with the same fierce determination. That he is already talking of making greater use of analytics is just a sign of things to come, IMHO.

That doesn't necessarily bode well for Nonis and Carlyle however. If he keeps them around, I think they'll be expected to turn things around pretty fast.

Shanahan basically takes over Leiweke's spot in the Maple Leafs hierarchy. Shanahan may not have experience at the management level, but his hockey knowledge is a thousand times better than Leiweke's and even Leiweke will admit to that. The decision to create this position was made months ago & the only reason the announcement was made now instead of after the end of the season is because the media had already got word of the potential hiring & the upcoming hiring was already circulating around the league. In order to not put Shanahan and the league in a tough position (conflict of interest, etc), the team decided to make the official hiring & eventual announcement now instead of later.

There is also increasing belief in Toronto that Leiweke will likely leave the organization within the next year. He misses California, he hates the long winter (especialy the recent one) and he's not crazy about the current organizational setup within MLSE since his time there. Let's face it: MLSE might have simply become too big for its own good.

Nonis & his management team (Loiselle & Pouliln) are safe for now. But it's quite obviousl that Brendan Shanahan might want to bring in his own people once he gets comfortable with his new job. But Shanahan will need Nonis in order to learn his job. However, it would not surprise me to see Nonis bolting for the Calgary Flames at any time. Nonis has always followed Brian Burke ever since he first dipped his toes in professional hockey & if Burke is looking for a GM, i'm certain the first name that came to mind was Dave Nonis. If Nonis would ever decide to bolt, it wouldn't surprise me to see either Dave Poulin or Claude Loiselle be named as the Leafs GM for the time being. They are both very capable to do the job.

As for Randy Carlyle, i wouldn't shed a tear if he'd be given his walking papers. He's a very good coach, but he simply isn't a good fit with the current batch of players & it's quite clear that this season, the players were all fed up with him & had tuned him out. The days of playing for a coach the players all hate are a thing of the past. Carlyle has never been a players' coach & I doubt he'll ever change.

Bring on Mike Babcock, who also happens to be a good friend of Shanahan's.

Doc, who would you like to see coaching the Leafs next season?

So far, only Mike Babcock comes to mind. But if he's not available, it'll depend who's out there. Kirk Muller & Adam Oates (if they get fired) would be on my list. I wouldn't mind Paul Maurice, but he's been here already. Don't know enough of Barry Trotz to make a decision. I'm also not sure about Pete Laviolette.

And again, it'll depend who gets fired after the playoffs. If San Jose once again gets knocked out early, will they fire their coach? What about Chicago? How safe is Quenneville if St-Louis eliminates them in the first round? Is Claude Julien safe in Boston if Detroit surprises them? Those are all coaches i'd want with the Leafs.

Do you think MLSE would try to lure babCock out of the final year of his contract by making him the highest paid coach in NHL history? They have the $ to do so and as you previously pointed out living in and around deadtroit is the slums compared to the paradise of living in the Mecca aka Toronto. What about Steve Spott?

Quick trivia question:

Only one playoff team is in the negative (-) column for goals for/against this season. Two points for those who can name the team in question:

Right: Only one PLAYOFF team...so we're not talking about the really shitty NON-PLAYOFF teams like the pathetic MINUS 25 LEAFS , who - by the way - allowed 2945 shots, the most EVER by ANY team in an 82 game season.

Deadtroit and that was way too easy!

Well well, look who's emerged from HIDING for the past several weeks after his team gutlessly tanked in the last sixth of the season.

"Deadtroit"? Funny, but they MADE the playoffs - unlike that SHITBAG SQUAD from hogtown that's been checking out golf courses for the past month. If David Clarkson's GOLF scores were as LOW as his HOCKEY scores, he might actually be worth the $36 million that Nonis wasted on him!

Good stuff, welcome home Shanahan.

As I predicted, Shanny's now your new poster boy just because he made the mistake of going to the absolute worst team in ALL of professional sports. Not long ago you wrote in this very thread "What a joke Shanny has become". You remember don't you? It was the same post where you showed your "great hockey knowledge" (ha ha ha) by referring to him as "Brandon" (sic) Shanahan. You have a lot in common with Bart Simpson's father - in case you didn't know, his name is (no, not "Brandon" - sic) HOMER.

I think a fresh start next season and we will see Clarkson have a much better year.

Really? You think so? Gosh, won't it be awfully HARD to improve on a year where your HERO managed to put up these ASTOUNDING numbers:

60 games played, 5 goals, 6 assists, 11 points, MINUS 14, 38.1% on faceoffs, TWO suspensions (1 for 10 games, 1 for 2 games) ...in the FIRST year of a SEVEN YEAR $36.75 MILLION contract that will end when he's in his late thirties.

Enjoy the Koolaid!

The Red Wings, the Habs......many other teams have miserable records drafting in the first round or two.

You've posted this same barefaced lie several times in this thread and each time I've shot it down with the correct FACTS. I'm not going to waste my time doing it again but it's all documented in this thread, along with many, many other lies, errors, and laughably incorrect predictions by the leaflovers. The KNOWLEDGEABLE hockey fans who read these threads are well aware of the truth.

Edmonton wasn't even IN the NHL until a dozen years after expansion, yet they have FIVE Cups to the ZERO the leafs have since 67!

Furthermore, even in the past DECADE (which certainly hasn't been the Oilers' best) they have a BETTER record than the stinkin' leafs. (Then again, doesn't EVERYONE?)

Well well, look who's emerged from HIDING for the past several weeks after his team gutlessly tanked in the last sixth of the season.

Now that their """""team""""" has (as usual) failed in making playoffs, I predict that Doc and Ignaxxx are now courageously going to support the best team of the NHL (Boston).

Like 2 starving hyena, they just have to wait for Mtl and Detroit's elimination, knowing perfectly that none of them are able to beat the Bruins this year...

By the way, the Flyers just gave a big contract to Andrew MacDonald. They gave him a 6-year contract at $5 million per season. Is Andrew MacDonald a $5 million defenceman???/QUOTE]

Probably not - but then again he's sure as hell better than Dion Phaneuf who's "earning" (ha ha ha) $7 million a season on another of the "brilliant" (ha ha ha) moves by Dave Nonis.

but betting is frowned upon on here (or at least it was when mod8 was around) but Joe.T tells me dont bother betting with you. Something about collecting is like pulling teeth out of a rabid pit bull's mouth at supper time.

Mod 8 actually admonished Joe T. because the latter boasted on many occasions on this board to losing a bet to me and stiffing me. The fact that you blatantly lie about it is one of the reasons that nobody with half a brain would bet with either of you.

Last year I went 8/8 in picking the winners of the opening round of betting. My picks this year are Boston, Pittsburgh, New York, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, Los Angeles, Chicago and Colorado.
