Agreed, Philly just never learns and i for one am glad of it. You will be lucky to get 250 games out of him in those 5 years. They buy out Briere only to do another bad contract. Vinny is not elite any longer, but will be a good fit on the second line i suppose, but what about Couturier and B.Schenn? Neither of them are projected to be 3rd line centres so one of them could be on the trade block as silly as that sounds. Maybe they will play on the wings?

Philly as off this moment is over the cap with 24 players signed. Giroux, B Schenn and Couturier are all free agents next season, right there is likely $12-13 million in salary after raises. Btw, Philly has ONE goalie signed and it is not a high calibre type either in Mason.

Reimer and a 2nd rounder for Couturier in a perfect world lol........

You'd think GMs would have learned their lesson on long-term contracts but Pitt just inked Letang for 8 years. That goes with Sid for 12 and Gino for 8. They're all good players but you're rolling the dice with these lengthy contracts. Look at Luongo, Vinny, and DiPietro to name just 3...and interestingly 2 of those 3 (Vinny and DiPietro) just got bought out...while Luongo's contract has been an albatross to both him AND the Nucks.

Good riddance to DiPietro though - Garth Snow finally got one right!

I could see Gillis gone after this season IF the Nucks do not go very deep into the playoffs..... But he gets what he deserves. Supposedly the Leafs and Nucks had a deal on the table before the trade deadline but in it Tor wanted as part of the deal, 1mil dollars back from Van and it infuriated Gillis so he nixed the deal.

Only an idiot like Paul Holmgren would give this underachiever such a contract!!! He obviously didn't learn his lessons with contracts he gave to Pronger, Briere & Bryzgalov!!

First he overpays for Strait, and now surprise-surprise, Lecavalier. I actually won a bet tonight when i predicted he'd sign with the Flyers. I took a rough guess, figuring he'd get crazy dollars to sign somewhere and that it likely would come from someone like Paul Holmgren, who must have taken too many hits to the head during his playing career!

Anyone think the Flyers might buy him out next season & make him the highest paid NHL hockey player ever??

They are stuck with him for the full five years unless they can trade him but if thats the case it means he is not performing and nobody would take him anyways. He also has a full no movement. Hahha,,, good ole Flyers, first Gillis in Vancouver with the Luongo/Schneider fiasco and now Holmgren with another dumb move....but i must say i love it! I think Gillis vs Holmgren should be a matchup in the UFC... boys, start dialing Dana White!

A source tells me that Daniel Alfredsson has just told the Sens he won't be heading back to Ottawa. Detroit or Boston?

On another note, the Dallas Stars have just obtained captain Shawn Horcoff from the Oilers for Philip Larsen and a 7th-round pick.

Alfie choses Detroit, Ference to Edmonton, Emery to Philly, Ribeiro to Phoenix, Komo rejoins Capt. Kirk in Carolina.

Elsewhere, Scuderi chose Pitt over Toronto, Horton got 7 years from Columbus, Clowe got 5 years from Lou Lamoriello, and Ottawa signed Clark MacArthur.

Word is that Ottawa will outbid everyone & sign David Clarkson to a long-term deal.

Senators acquire Bobby Ryan from the Anaheim Ducks for forward Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a first-round pick.

Great trade for both teams!!

TSN's Pierre McGwire's final analysis of today's moves (for Canadian teams) is that Toronto & Ottawa are the clear winners. Prior to the Ryan deal, Toronto was the lone winner. The clear losers are Montreal & Vancouver, who didn't do much.

George Parros wasn't a bad deal for the habs. But he's at the end of his career & won't play much. He's a white Georges Laracque. However, they needed to add someone like him for their games against the Leafs & Bruins.

Jarome Iginla to the Bruins for 1 year at.....$6 million???? Are you f#^# kidding me??

Alfie choses Detroit.

Quite a shocker that he left Ottawa where he's a hero and a legend...but of course he knows he very possibly only has one year left. He wants a Cup and figures, not surprisingly, that his best chance is with the great Detroit Red Wings, the undisputed class act of the league. Let's face it: given the choice, any player in his right mind would always choose Detroit.
