Hello everyone,

Now that the season is over, both this thread as well as the Free For All thread will be closed at the end of the week. This should give everyone time to get their last thoughts about the season posted. At that time, an off season NHL thread will be started for members to post about the various changes that are sure to happen before the start of next year's season.

Congratulations to the Chicago Black Hawks for a well deserved Stanley Cup win!

p.s. Why did Vancouver jump the gun in hiring the despised (by all) John Tortorella? What was the hurry? No one else would have hired him anyway (other than possibly the Bruins had they fired Julien). If Claude Julien is fired in Boston, Vancouver will be kicking themselves for not being more patient. Julien would be perfect for Vancouver's team.

Agree completely Doc, but the NY/Vancouver "trade" of coaches had been rumored for at least a couple of weeks. I think this was one "trade" that the Rangers won!

Philly's is for sure........ but then again he is old and is trying to win at all costs, but his judgement is not the best these days. Now watch them trade for Luongo, this just after getting out of a horrible contract in Bryz.

Bruins informed A. Ference today he will not be resigned, along with Jagr and Pandolfo which was expected. Even doing this the bruins only have 5.8 million to resign Horton and Rask and Rask made 3.5 million this season and is due a big raise (likely #1 status of $5mil or more) and Horton made $4mil......... how will they resign both? Rask is a given but Horton might be gone to UFA.

If they do sign both somehow, i believe that leaves them with 21 on the roster and still need to sign 2 more players to make the roster complete.

Buyout trade between Lightning, Maple Leafs for Vincent Lecavalier reportedly nixed

The NHL closed a loophole for compliance buyouts after some clever bargaining between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning.

According to the New York Post, the two clubs discussed a deal that would send centre Vincent Lecavalier and an asset – possibly a draft pick – to the Leafs. Toronto would then buy out Lecavalier’s massive contract and Tampa Bay would sign him to a more modest deal.

Such a deal would save the Lightning a large amount of dough and get out from under Lecavalier’s $7.7-million salary cap hit. The 33-year-old centre has seven years and $45 million left on his contract. A buyout would see him paid $30 million over 14 years.

The collective bargaining agreement prevents teams from re-signing players they’ve bought out for one year. Upon hearing of the potential deal between the Leafs and Lightning, the NHL ruled such a scheme would circumvent the CBA.

The Lightning are looking to cut salary with the cap going down to $64.3 million next season. The team has just 10 forwards, six defenceman and two goalies signed with $2.4 million in cap space.

Lecavalier signed an eleven-year, $85 million contract with the Lightning that began in 2009-10.

Leafs/Tampa Lecavalier trade nixed by NHL?

From what i was told, the Leafs would have received Tampa Bay's first pick in the upcoming draft, which is the 3rd overall. My guess is that this pick would have been either Jonathan Drouin or Seth Jones.

More on the nixed trade from Larry Brooks of the NY Post:

I wouldn't be surprised if Tampa also buys out Ryan Malone, who was also being shopped around for a 3rd-round draft pick a couple of days ago.

Lecavalier's buy-out will surprise many, who believe Tampa cannot do without their long-time captain. Lecavalier also appears set to remain in Tampa, which is why Tampa & the Leafs had agreed to a trade the other day which would have seen Lecavalier & their first-rounder sent to the Leafs for a pick, where the Leafs would have agreed to buy-out Lecavalier in order to have him re-sign with Tampa. However, as we now know, the league got word of this and nixed the deal, calling it circumvention of the salary cap.

But an interesting scenario brought up by Elliotte Friedman yesterday on Primetime Sports mentionned that nothing would be illegal if the Leafs (or any other team) would trade for Lecavalier, then buy him out, and then another team would have pre-agreed to sign Lecavalier & trade him back to Tampa. However, to actually have three teams get together to agree to this would be next to impossible in today's NHL. But stranger things have happened.

Vinny is anxious to make a new start and prove he can still play. I think he will be better on another team than on Tampa because he will have some newly-created fire, plus he is apparently healthy again which he has not been for some time. His top choices for obvious reasons are Detroit and Montreal. Wherever Vinny goes, I wish him the best - a class act all the way especially AWAY from the rink.

That's strange. I was watching "Le Match" earlier tonight & Detroit was actually one of the last places the panel said he'd go to since they're rebuilding and have literally no chance of contending for a cup for another few years. Chicago, New York, Anaheim & Montreal were mentionned as possible destinations he'd sign with.

What about a gentlemans handshake between Holland and Steve Why.....? Detroit signs him for one year so that Steve Why can sign Vinny after the year is up. (under the new CBA a player bought out cannot resign with the same club for one year) Haha..... i would LOL if Holland ended up signing Vinny to a 3-4 year deal instead and throwing the middle finger at Steve Why

Steve Why was a decent player but he sure has not done much as a GM so far.
